The useful checks are backed-up photos and videos, offline media, downloads, unused apps, and app cache. The “10GB” in the original headline is a personal claim, not a recovery amount established for Pixel phones generally.
How to see what is taking up storage on your Pixel
- Open Settings > Storage to review the categories using space. Menu names may vary by Android version.
- Tap a category to inspect its contents. For suggested cleanup, open Storage > Free up space.
- If a category does not show files, use Browse to look through files stored on the phone.
Storage holds data such as photos and music; memory is where programs run. Start with the category taking up space rather than deleting data at random. Google’s cleanup instructions note that some steps apply only to Android 11 and later. Google Pixel Help: Free up space on a Pixel phone.

Remove local photos and videos only after checking backup
Smart Storage can automatically remove local copies of backed-up photos and videos when device storage is almost full. You can also remove those local copies manually, but first confirm that backup has completed. Google says backed-up items can be found in Google Photos when the phone is online.
Deleting a local copy from the device is not the same as deleting the backed-up item from your account. Check that the media is backed up and accessible before removing it from the phone. Google Pixel Help explains Smart Storage and photo cleanup.

Clear downloads and offline media you no longer need
Downloaded films, music, and other offline content are managed by the app that downloaded them. Remove them in that app if you no longer need offline access. For ordinary files, review the phone’s Downloads folder and delete only items you recognize and no longer need.
Removing an offline download may mean you need an internet connection to access that content again.

Review apps and Android’s unused-app controls
Uninstall apps you no longer use
Uninstalling an app you no longer need can remove its local files and data. Before uninstalling, check whether it contains information you need to keep or sync elsewhere.
Check the unused-app list
Android can optimize apps that have not been used for a long time by deleting temporary files, revoking permissions, pausing background activity, and stopping notifications. Review the Unused apps list if you want to see which apps are affected. Clear cache—not app storage—unless you intend to erase app data
Clearing an app’s cache removes temporary data; the app may run more slowly the next time it opens while it rebuilds that data. Clear storage is different: it permanently deletes the app’s data. Google recommends trying to delete data from within the app first. Avoid clearing app storage as a general cleanup step unless you understand what will be lost. Copy files to a computer before removing them
If you want to keep files but do not need them on the phone, Google recommends copying files and folders to a computer over USB, checking the copied files, and then deleting the phone copies. You need available space on the computer and a working USB data connection; a charging-only cable may not transfer files. Use a compatible USB-C data cable if you do not already have one.

What the 10% storage warning means
Google says, “Your phone can have issues when less than 10% of storage is available.” That is a warning about the share of storage remaining, not a promise that any cleanup method will recover 10 GB. The amount you can reclaim depends on what is stored on your particular phone; Google’s cited instructions do not give typical savings by cleanup method. Phone storage and Google Account storage are separate
Deleting files from your phone can free local device space, while Google Account storage is a separate limit. Google says each account comes with up to 15 GB of account storage; that figure is not the Pixel’s built-in capacity. Buying more account storage does not by itself remove files from the phone.
