What the Pixel Phone app rollout means
The Pixel Phone app (the system-level calling app on Pixel devices) is being updated so it can: (1) record calls when allowed, and (2) provide better integration with Android Auto so calling features appear where you drive.

- 128gb of storage
- Includes charging cord and box
- Excellent cosmetic condition
Prerequisites and compatibility checks
Before you start toggling settings, verify the basics that typically gate both features.
- Use a supported Pixel device (newer models are more likely to get full feature parity).
- Keep Pixel Phone updated via the Google Play Store.
- Confirm your Android version is current (Android Auto improvements and permission behavior can differ across releases).
- Check region/legal constraints for call recording. Availability may be disabled where required by law.
- Be aware of role-based rollout: even with the latest app build, the feature toggle can be withheld until Google finishes server rollout.
How to update the Pixel Phone app
Start with the most common prerequisite: the right app version installed on your device.
- Open the Play Store.
- Search for Pixel Phone.
- Tap Update if it appears, or confirm it says Installed.
- After updating, restart your phone once (this clears stuck permission caches and UI state).
If you don’t see an update button, you may already be on the latest build—or you may be waiting for the staged rollout. In that case, continue with the checks below.
Enable Call Recording (where available)
If Call Recording is enabled for your account and region, you’ll see a setting inside the Pixel Phone app. If you don’t, you’ll need to validate prerequisites and wait for server-side availability.
Check local availability and legal constraints
Call recording rules vary by country and sometimes by state or province. Some regions require consent from all parties; others require only one party’s consent. If your area requires consent from all parties, recording may be limited or may present audible/visible notices.
If the feature is present, follow the prompts and comply with the law where you live.
Turn on call recording from Phone app settings
Use these UI labels, which match the common Pixel Phone settings flow.

- Open the Phone app.
- Tap your profile icon or three-dot menu (varies by build).
- Go to Settings.
- Look for Call recording (sometimes under Calls or Calling accounts depending on Android version).
- Toggle Call recording to On.
If you see “Not available” messaging, the feature is gated for your device/account or disabled by policy.
Choose what gets recorded (if your build supports it)
Some builds provide extra controls such as recording all eligible calls, excluding certain numbers, or recording only when prompted. If your UI includes these options, set them now—changing them later won’t affect calls already placed.
- For toggles like Record all calls, choose the most specific option you’re comfortable with.
- If you see an option related to Wi‑Fi calling or carrier calls, test with a short call after enabling.
Understand recording indicators and notifications
When call recording is active, the phone may show a recording indicator and/or play a tone/announcement depending on your region and configuration. If you don’t hear or see any indicator, don’t assume the call is recorded—verify after a test call.
Find, manage, and export recorded calls
After enabling Call Recording, immediately place a brief test call to confirm the recording is created and accessible.

Where recordings are stored
Recordings are typically accessible from within the Phone app’s call history area. Some builds also expose recordings via a dedicated tab or within a call detail screen.
- Open Phone → Recents.
- Tap the relevant call entry.
- Look for an option such as Recorded, Recording, or a playback control.
Delete recordings safely
Deleting recordings removes them from your device storage, but it may not immediately remove them from any backups depending on your setup.
- Open the call detail or recordings view.
- Select the recording.
- Tap Delete (or the trash icon).
- Confirm the prompt.
If you’re managing sensitive conversations, delete promptly and verify the playback is gone by returning to the call list.

Android Auto access: what changes and why it matters
Android Auto access means the Pixel Phone app can communicate with the Android Auto environment so calling features surface in the car interface—reducing the need to reach for your phone mid-drive.
In practice, you’ll usually notice improvements like better call display, easier calling, and fewer handoff issues between the phone and Android Auto head unit.
Enable Android Auto call integration
You typically don’t “enable Android Auto access” as a single switch inside Pixel Phone. Instead, you ensure both the phone and Android Auto have the permissions and connectivity they need.
Grant required permissions on your phone
Verify the Phone app has the right permissions. Exact wording can vary, but these are the common settings you’ll encounter.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps → See all apps.
- Select Phone (Pixel Phone).
- Go to Permissions.
- Ensure call-related permissions are granted as prompted (for example, Phone, Nearby device / Bluetooth, and notification permissions if the integration relies on them).
If you recently denied a prompt while setting up Android Auto, revisit permissions and re-enable.

Confirm Android Auto permissions and app access
On the Android Auto side, make sure the app isn’t blocked from notifications and device features.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps → See all apps.
- Select Android Auto.
- Go to Permissions and enable any required permissions.
- Go to Notifications and allow notifications if you expect call alerts in the car.
Test the hands-free call experience
Do a fast, low-stakes test to confirm the integration works.
Recommended Free Tools
- Start Android Auto (wired USB or wireless, depending on your setup).
- Place a call to yourself or ask a friend to call you.
- Confirm you see the incoming call screen in Android Auto and can answer/decline.
- End the call and verify the call duration and status reflect correctly.
If call audio is off, focus on audio routing and Bluetooth connection stability before changing app settings again.
Troubleshooting when Call Recording won’t show up
If you expected the call recording toggle but don’t see it, don’t panic—most cases are gating, permission, or connectivity issues.
Common causes
- Server-side rollout not enabled for your device/account yet.
- Region/legal restrictions disabling the feature.
- Outdated Pixel Phone app build (or you updated too recently to reflect UI state).
- Phone app data/caches stuck after a failed update.
- Carrier/telephony constraints that prevent recording on certain call types.
Step-by-step fixes
- Recheck the Pixel Phone update in Play Store and restart your phone.
- Confirm you’re not using a work profile limitation. If you have a work-managed profile, permissions can differ.
- Check Settings → Phone → Call recording again after restarting.
- Clear Pixel Phone cache (try cache first, not data):
- Settings → Apps → Phone → Storage
- Tap Clear cache
- Re-open Phone app and re-check for the toggle
- Clear Pixel Phone data only if cache doesn’t help, because this resets app state:
- Settings → Apps → Phone → Storage
- Tap Clear storage or Clear data
- Verify Android Auto access isn’t blocking notifications only if you see odd UI behavior. Call recording shouldn’t depend on Android Auto, but permission toggles can affect overall Phone UI prompts.
- Wait 24–72 hours after an app update. Server-side flags often catch up after the client update.
If the option still doesn’t appear, treat it as “not enabled for your account/device yet” rather than broken. Forcing updates typically doesn’t change the server gate.

When Android Auto doesn’t show call info or can’t answer calls properly, you’ll usually find the cause in connection stability, Bluetooth/audio routing, or permissions.
Common causes
- Android Auto app not updated.
- Bluetooth pairing issues or unstable connection.
- Notifications disabled for Android Auto.
- Phone app permissions denied after an OS update.
- Wired vs wireless mismatch (a feature might work over USB but not Wi‑Fi, or vice versa).
Step-by-step fixes
- Update Android Auto in Play Store.
- Toggle airplane mode on/off briefly to reset radio states.
- Re-pair Bluetooth between phone and car if calls fail while audio works.
- Reconnect Android Auto from scratch:
- Unplug USB (if wired), close Android Auto on the phone/head unit
- Restart Android Auto
- Re-check Android Auto notifications in Settings → Apps → Android Auto → Notifications.
- Check audio routing: when a call comes in, confirm the output device in the Android Auto UI is selecting the car audio.
- Test with a single call scenario (incoming call, then outgoing call). If only one direction fails, you’ve narrowed it to a specific integration pathway.
If you recently changed car head unit firmware or updated Android Auto, timing matters. Give it a full reconnect cycle after updates, not just a quick refresh.

Privacy, compliance, and safety checklist
Call recording and car integrations both touch sensitive data. Treat them like production features, not convenience toggles.
- Check consent requirements before recording in your jurisdiction.
- Verify indicators before you rely on a recording.
- Secure your phone with a screen lock. Recorded calls are only useful if unauthorized access is prevented.
- Be careful when sharing recordings. Use methods that match your compliance needs.
- Review app permissions periodically after major Android updates.
Comparison: Call Recording vs call screening/visual voicemail
These features solve different problems. If you’re deciding whether to use recording, it helps to understand the tradeoffs.
| Feature | What it does | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Call Recording | Saves audio from eligible calls | Verification, documentation, and follow-ups |
| Call screening | Assesses calls and helps you decide | Spam reduction and reducing interruptions |
| Visual voicemail | Shows voicemail messages and transcripts (if available) | Reviewing messages later without listening in real time |
If your goal is record-keeping, recording is the direct tool. If your goal is fewer unwanted calls, screening and voicemail are usually the better first line.
FAQs
If I updated Pixel Phone, why don’t I see Call Recording yet?
Feature toggles are often server-gated. Even with the latest Pixel Phone app installed, it can take 24–72 hours (or longer) for the call recording switch to appear. Also check whether your region disables the feature.
Will recorded calls appear in call history?
On most Pixel builds, yes. Open Phone → Recents, tap the call entry, and look for playback/recording controls. If the entry doesn’t show recording controls, repeat a short test call after confirming the recording toggle is on.
Does Android Auto access affect call recording?
Usually no. Call recording is handled by the Phone app and telephony layer. Android Auto access is about display, audio routing, and hands-free calling in the car. They may share permission prompts, but recording itself shouldn’t be blocked by Android Auto.
Android Auto shows incoming calls on my phone but not in the car—what should I check first?
Check Android Auto notifications permission and reconnect Android Auto fully. Then verify audio routing and Bluetooth pairing stability. If you’re using wireless Android Auto, try a USB connection once to isolate whether Wi‑Fi stability is the cause.

Not always. Some regions/carriers or specific call types can block recording even when the toggle exists. If you see inconsistent results, test with different call types (mobile vs Wi‑Fi calling) and confirm any in-app notes that appear under Call recording settings.
Bottom Line
The Pixel Phone app rollout adds real utility: Call Recording for documentation and Android Auto access for safer, hands-free calling. If the options don’t appear, it’s usually a staged rollout, region/legal restrictions, or a permissions/cache issue.
Update Pixel Phone and Android Auto, verify permissions, run a short test call, and only then troubleshoot deeply. That approach saves time—and tells you whether you’re waiting on server enablement or fixing a local configuration.
