If you’re already using launcher search for speed, this should shave off a few taps every time.
This guide explains what the shortcut is, how to trigger it on your Pixel, and what to do if you don’t see it yet. You’ll also get practical alternatives so you can stay fast even before the rollout hits your device.

What’s changing in Pixel Launcher
Pixel Launcher’s app search has gained a faster action path. When you type an app name (or a partial name), Pixel Launcher can surface an “Open” shortcut right in the search flow. The goal is simple: reduce the steps between your query and launching the app.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Instead of treating search primarily as a “find then open” workflow, the launcher tries to treat it as an immediate “open command” when your input matches an app strongly enough.

Why a search shortcut matters
On a phone, launcher search is often your fastest way to jump between apps—especially when you don’t want to swipe through the app drawer. Every time Pixel Launcher can turn search results into a one-tap launch, it improves real-world speed.
- Fewer taps: direct “Open” reduces the time between query and launch.
- Less context switching: you stay in the same search interface while launching.
- Works with both typing and interaction: it can pair well with keyboard input and quick suggestions.
Prerequisites (check these first)
Before troubleshooting, confirm a few basics. Launcher UI behavior can vary by device, Android version, and staged rollout state.
- You’re using Pixel Launcher as your default launcher (not a third-party launcher).
- Pixel Launcher is updated enough to include the rollout feature.
- App search is enabled in launcher settings.
- Your device is a Pixel phone eligible for the staged rollout.
How to use the new search shortcut to open apps
There are multiple ways to trigger the shortcut depending on how your device shows search results. Use whichever one matches your on-screen UI.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Method 1: Use the search field and tap Open
1) Open launcher search from the home screen (swipe up/app drawer search, or tap the search bar depending on your layout). 2) Type the app name until you see it in suggestions/results. 3) Tap Open when it appears.
If the launcher is matching strongly, the “Open” action should be visible without you needing to enter an app details screen.
Method 2: Use keyboard/Enter to open immediately
If you have an on-screen keyboard or physical keyboard, the shortcut may also respond to an action key. After typing the app name:
- Type enough characters to uniquely identify the app.
- Look for an app highlighted in the search UI.
- Press Enter (or tap the suggested app row) to launch.
If you see a dedicated Open button in the results card, tapping that may be even faster than entering search.

- Pixel 10a is sleek and durable, with a super smooth finish, scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass 7i display, and IP68 water and dust protection[4]

Method 3: From app suggestions (when they show)
Some Pixel Launcher versions show app suggestions above the full results list. When you start typing, you may see a suggestion row with an immediate action.
- Open launcher search.
- Start typing an app name (e.g., “Mail”, “Maps”, “Photos”).
- Watch for an Open label on the suggested result.
- Tap Open to launch directly.
If you only see the app name without “Open,” use Method 1’s results tapping—those builds typically still allow fast launching, just with one extra step.
Enable it or update Pixel Launcher
Because this is a rollout feature, you may not see it the same day everyone else does. The most reliable path is updating Pixel Launcher from the Play Store and ensuring Pixel Launcher is your default.
Update via Google Play
- Open Google Play Store.
- Search for Pixel Launcher.
- Tap Update (if available).
- Reboot your phone if the update completes while you’re actively using the launcher.
Rollouts often happen in waves. If there’s no update button, you may already be on the correct build—but your device might still be waiting for the feature flag.

Some users install alternate launchers or switch defaults for accessibility or customization. Confirm the Pixel Launcher is active:
- Go to Settings.
- Tap Apps (or Apps & notifications).
- Tap Default apps.
- Tap Home app (or Default launcher).
- Select Pixel Launcher.
Troubleshooting: the shortcut isn’t showing
If you don’t see an Open action during search, don’t assume you’re missing a setting. This feature commonly depends on staged rollout and UI logic that can differ per build.
Wait for staged rollout
Google frequently rolls out features gradually. It’s normal for the same device model to get the update feature at different times. If you confirmed Pixel Launcher is up to date, the simplest fix may be time.
- Check the Play Store for Pixel Launcher updates again after 24–72 hours.
- Try on a fresh search session (exit search fully, then open it again).
Clear Pixel Launcher cache and retry
This can force the launcher to reload updated UI assets without a full reinstall.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Find and tap Pixel Launcher.
- Tap Storage (or Storage & cache).
- Tap Clear cache.
- Close the app switcher, then reopen the launcher search.
Avoid clearing data unless you’re comfortable redoing some personalization (icons, home screen arrangement may vary by device).
Confirm you haven’t disabled app search
If launcher search is restricted, the UI may never reach the state where it can show an “Open” shortcut.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps > Default apps > Assist & voice input if you’re not sure where launcher search settings live on your build.
- Alternatively, open Pixel Launcher settings from the launcher UI (some versions show a gear icon on search or home screen settings).
If you see any setting that limits home screen search or suggestions, enable it and test again.
Check for overlays or launcher modifiers
If you use accessibility overlays, screen readers, or UI automations, they can change how search results render and which actions are available.
Recommended Free Tools
- Temporarily disable screen filters or overlays.
- Check if you’re using a custom gesture navigation app or automation tool that intercepts taps.
- Test with only basic settings enabled.
Common mistakes that slow you down
Even with the shortcut available, a few habits can make you miss it.
- Typing too few characters: if the launcher can’t confidently match the app, it may not show an immediate “Open” action.
- Leaving search too early: tapping outside the result card can collapse the search UI.
- Ignoring keyboard behavior: if you have a keyboard, Enter may open faster than switching to touch.
- Using a different launcher: third-party launchers won’t have the same Pixel Launcher search UI logic.
Alternatives if you need speed right now
If the shortcut hasn’t appeared yet, you still have reliable ways to open apps quickly. These aren’t identical, but they’re fast enough for daily use.

Use quick search from the home screen
Even without the new shortcut, the core benefit of launcher search remains. Type an app name, then tap the matching result row to open it. This is usually faster than browsing folders.
Try using consistent names (e.g., “Gmail” vs “Mail”) so the suggestions converge quickly.
Pin apps with icons or shortcuts
If you repeatedly open 5–10 apps, pinning them reduces reliance on search entirely.
- Add widgets or folders for categories you use daily (News, Banking, Maps).
- Create app shortcuts on the home screen for your top apps.
Use voice search
When your hands are busy, voice search can be quicker than typing. Open launcher search/assistant-style voice entry and say the app name clearly.
For best accuracy, include brand names (“Open Google Maps” rather than just “Maps”).

FAQ
How do I know the Pixel Launcher search shortcut is active?
When you search for an app, you should see a direct Open action on the matching result card or suggestion. If you only see an app name and must navigate into another screen, you likely don’t have the new shortcut yet.
Why doesn’t it show up even after updating Pixel Launcher?
Two common reasons: staged rollout (feature flag hasn’t reached your device) or a different UI state triggered by your search behavior. Try typing more of the app name and re-open search after a reboot.
Does this work on every Pixel model?
The rollout is tied to Pixel Launcher builds and eligible devices. Some models may receive the feature earlier, while others catch up later due to staged delivery and compatibility checks.
Can I use it with a keyboard?
Yes. If your Pixel setup supports keyboard input, try typing the app name and pressing Enter. Many builds also respond to tapping the highlighted suggestion.
Will clearing cache remove my app data?
Clearing cache typically doesn’t delete your accounts or personal data. It mainly resets temporary files used by the app. Clearing data is riskier, so avoid it unless you’ve exhausted other steps.
Bottom Line
The Pixel Launcher search shortcut is a small UI change with a real daily impact: it turns app search into a faster “open command” by surfacing an Open action directly in the search results. If you already use launcher search, the rollout should feel immediately useful.
If you don’t see it yet, update Pixel Launcher, confirm you’re on the default launcher, then clear Pixel Launcher cache and wait through the staged rollout window. In the meantime, launcher search itself (plus quick icons/shortcuts) will keep your app launching fast.
