If your Pixel Launcher search used to show local “device” results (apps, settings, sometimes files) and now it sends you into the Google app, you’re not alone. A lot of reports boil down to the same change: the search entry point was re-routed, and the UX expectation shifted to the Google app as the main search surface.
Because Google controls both the Pixel Launcher experience and the Google app’s search behavior, this kind of change often gets labeled as not a bug—especially when the “device search” function still exists, just moved to a different UI or results source.

What changed and what it means (not a bug)
On many Pixels, the “search” experience you trigger from Pixel Launcher is no longer treated as a standalone local index. Instead, the action now opens the Google app’s search UI (or hands off to it), where results can blend app suggestions, settings, web content, and account-aware recommendations.

Where the device search moved: the current behavior
Typically, you’ll see one of these outcomes when you tap or swipe for search from Pixel Launcher:
- You’re taken to the Google app instead of staying within Pixel Launcher’s search UI.
- Local results are still present, but they appear inside the Google app’s search results and cards.
- “Device” filtering may look different because the UI labels changed (for example, app suggestions vs. web-first results).
In practice, “device search replaced by Google app” usually means “the destination changed,” not “the search feature disappeared.”
Prerequisites before you change anything
Before you start flipping settings, verify three basics. This prevents you from chasing ghosts caused by version mismatches or disabled components.

Also confirm you’re on a standard home screen setup (not a custom launcher), and that you can reproduce the behavior consistently.
Fixes to try (fastest first)
These steps are ordered to solve the most common causes: default app routing, settings mismatches, and cached state issues.
Confirm you’re on the expected Pixel Launcher + Google app versions
Sometimes one app updates and the other doesn’t, leaving search handoff in a broken or unexpected state. On many Pixels, the change correlates with a Google app update plus Pixel Launcher UX updates released over weeks and rolled out gradually.
Action: open Play Store, search for Google and Pixel Launcher, and update both. After updating, reboot once.
Set Google app as the default for the relevant search action
Android’s “defaults” can affect which app handles search-related intents. If another app is intercepting the action, you may land in the wrong place or the old behavior won’t trigger.

- Go to Apps (or Apps & notifications).
- Tap Default apps.
- Find anything related to Assist & voice input, Search, or Browser app (depending on your build).
- Ensure Google (Google app) is selected where it applies.
If you don’t see a “Search” default, move on to the Pixel Launcher and Google app settings below.
Check Pixel Launcher search settings
Pixel Launcher has settings that influence what search does and what it surfaces. Some builds expose a preference for Google search integration.

- Go to Settings.
- Tap Apps → Pixel Launcher.
- Open App settings (or look for Search / Suggestions items).
- Check whether toggles exist for Google or Search suggestions. Re-enable anything that was disabled.
If you can’t find a search toggle in Pixel Launcher settings, check the Google app’s settings next.
Clear cache/data for Pixel Launcher and the Google app (carefully)
Stale cache can cause the launcher-to-Google handoff to fail or behave inconsistently. Clearing cache is safe; clearing data resets app state and may require sign-in prompts for some apps.
Action:
- Open Settings → Apps.
- Tap Pixel Launcher.
- Tap Storage & cache.
- Tap Clear cache.
- Repeat for the Google app.
If the issue persists, you can try Clear data for Pixel Launcher first (less disruptive than Google in some cases), then the Google app. If you choose “Clear data” for Google, be ready for sign-in and reconfiguration.
Toggle assistant/search permissions and app defaults
Search results routing can depend on permissions like microphone/voice, account sync, and assistant defaults. If permissions changed after an update, the app may fall back to a different behavior.

- Tap Apps → Google.
- Tap Permissions.
- Confirm search-related permissions aren’t denied in a way that breaks the flow (for many users, microphone access isn’t required unless voice search is used).
- Verify Google Assistant / Assistant default points to Google where applicable.
Update (or roll back) if your device is out of sync
If your search changed suddenly right after a specific update, it might be a staged rollout mismatch. The safest path is to update first (step above). If it’s still broken and updates don’t fix it quickly, you can consider waiting for the next build.
Android doesn’t support “official” rollbacks in a user-friendly way for most devices, so treat any workaround as a temporary measure until the rollout corrects itself.
If you still want “device search” for apps/settings/files
The functionality you want usually still exists; it’s just presented through Google app search surfaces rather than a Pixel Launcher-only index. Here’s how to shape the results so they feel like “device search” again.
Use App search inside the Google app
In the Google app’s search UI, local results often show as app suggestions, recent actions, or cards that target device content. Typing the name of an app or setting tends to produce faster local hits than generic keywords.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Try: type the exact app name (for example, “Settings”, “Photos”, “Maps”) or a specific setting label (for example, “Wi‑Fi”, “Battery”, “Notifications”).
Use the system search (Quick search / App drawer search)
Depending on your setup, you may have an alternative search entry that stays more local. For example, searching from the app drawer (if your build supports it) can reduce web-first results.
Action: open the app drawer, then use its search field/gesture to find apps. If you’re doing this for settings, search for the exact setting name, not a description.
Use shortcuts and launcher search tips
When the destination changed, you can compensate by using predictable triggers:
- Pin frequently used apps to the home screen and use Google search only when you don’t remember where something is.
- Search by exact terms (app brand names like “YouTube”, feature names like “Hotspot”, or system categories like “Accessibility”).
- If you rely on it, keep a consistent home screen layout; it improves suggestion accuracy.
Common gotchas and edge cases
Some users can’t reproduce the old “device search” behavior because of restrictions outside Pixel Launcher itself.
Work profile or managed device restrictions
On managed devices, device search and web results may be restricted by policy. The handoff to the Google app can look like a regression when it’s actually compliance behavior.
If you use a work profile, check whether web suggestions are disabled or whether the Google app is managed differently for your profile.
Kids mode / parental controls
Parental controls can alter what Google app search shows, especially web content. You may still get local app suggestions, but the UI can change and “device-only” results can become less obvious.

Offline mode and search results differences
When offline, Google app search can shift toward cached results and local behavior. If you compare “Wi‑Fi on” vs “Wi‑Fi off,” you might think the device search disappeared when the results just changed.
Accessibility changes that affect search gestures
Gesture settings, magnification, and accessibility services can affect which intent fires when you tap search. If your tap/swipe is being intercepted, you might land directly in the Google app.
Test by turning off temporary accessibility shortcuts (without disabling essential services) and retest the behavior.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting when the main fix fails
If the behavior persists after updating and clearing cache, treat it like an environment issue: third-party interceptors, disabled components, or a corrupted launcher state.
Rebuild launcher state
Try the sequence:
- Restart the phone.
- Clear cache for Pixel Launcher.
- Clear cache for Google.
- Re-test the search gesture from Pixel Launcher.
If you changed defaults recently, undo those changes and retest.
Check for disabled apps/components
If the Google app (or related components like Google services) is disabled, Pixel Launcher might fall back to a different routing path.
Action: go to Settings → Apps, search for Google, and confirm it isn’t disabled. If you see “Enable,” turn it back on.
Safe Mode test
Safe Mode helps you confirm whether a third-party app is intercepting the search intent (launchers, gesture apps, automation tools, VPN profiles, or accessibility helpers).

Last resort: backup and factory reset
Factory reset is rarely needed for this kind of UX routing issue, but it’s the only way to remove deeply corrupted app state or configuration. Do this only after updates + cache clears + default checks fail.
Before resetting, ensure you’ve backed up via your device’s standard backup options.
Alternative launchers (when you can’t get the old behavior)
If you’re chasing a very specific Pixel Launcher-only “device search” feel, third-party launchers can give you a different search implementation. However, they may not replicate Pixel Launcher’s deep integration and can change gesture behavior.
Consider this only if you’re okay trading some Google/Pixels integration for consistency. In many cases, the user experience you want is better solved by using the Google app search UI rather than replacing the launcher.
FAQs
Is Pixel Launcher device search actually gone?
Usually no. It’s typically routed through the Google app, where local and account-aware results are shown in a different layout. You may need to refine your query (exact app or setting names) to see strong device results.
How do I get search to stop opening the Google app?
On many current builds, you can’t fully disable the handoff without changing core defaults or using a different launcher. The best practical approach is updating both Pixel Launcher and Google app, then using app drawer search or Google app’s local result cards.
Will changing settings affect voice search or Assistant?
It can. If you adjust assistant defaults or related permissions, test voice input afterward. Clear cache for the Google app is safe for UI routing, but don’t use “Clear data” unless you’re prepared to reconfigure.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Is this rollout-specific to certain Pixel models?
Rollouts often target specific Pixel generations and country/language cohorts. Two identical phones can behave differently depending on their update timing and server-side experiments.
What should I report if it still feels wrong after fixes?
Capture your exact versions (Android, Pixel Launcher, Google app) and describe the trigger (tap search icon, swipe gesture, long-press). Include whether results show device apps/settings inside the Google app or if they become web-first.
Bottom Line
When Pixel Launcher device search is replaced by the Google app, it’s commonly a UX routing change rather than a broken feature. The “device search” capability often still exists—it’s just surfaced through Google app search.
Update Pixel Launcher and the Google app, verify defaults and search-related settings, clear cache, and use app drawer/system search if you want a more local-first feel. If none of that changes the handoff, the behavior is likely server/rollout driven and you may need to adapt to the Google app search flow.
