Pixel HiLight is not a video editor: it is a colored light on certain Pixel phones that signals Gemini interactions and calls from favorite contacts. They are for different jobs, so there is no direct quality contest.
What each feature does
| Feature | Purpose | Where it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Google Photos Highlight video | Creates a video recap from photos and video clips, with options to choose content and adjust clips, music, and text. | Google Photos; Google notes that older devices may not support creating highlight videos. Google Photos Help does not provide a complete device-by-device compatibility list. |
| Pixel HiLight | Uses a colored rear light to signal Gemini interactions and incoming calls from favorite contacts; it does not create video. | Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL, and Pixel 11 Pro Fold, according to Google Pixel Phone Help. |
Google describes HiLight as “a ring of ambient, color-coded LED lights wrapped around the camera’s flash.” It can be visible when the phone is face down. Google says favorite-contact call cues work with Phone by Google and WhatsApp, and users can assign colors to contacts. Google Store’s HiLight overview explains the hardware feature.

How to make a highlight video in Google Photos
Open Google Photos and go to Create → Highlight video. Google lists Highlight video among the Create tools, alongside options such as animation, collage, Photo to video, and Video remix. The workflow can begin with a template or with the content you want to include. Google Photos Help provides the current instructions.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteStart with a template
- In Google Photos, open Create and choose Highlight video.
- Choose a template. Templates include music and text, with cuts matched to the soundtrack.
- Select photos and videos yourself, or use Help me select. You can guide assisted selection with searches for people, places, themes, or dates, or choose suggested people, places, and time frames. Google’s examples include “Birthday,” “Museum,” and “Japan.”
- Review the video. Change clips, music, or text as needed, then save it.
Choose content first
You can also select photos and videos first, then create and review the video. Google documents both assisted and manual selection for this workflow. If Highlight video does not appear or creation is unavailable, the device may be too old; Google’s help page does not list every compatible device, so availability must be checked in the app on your phone.
#1 Best Overall
- Attention-grabbing design meets the latest evolution of the Google Pixel Camera on the new Google Pixel 11 Pro; Gemini Intelligence helps manage details so you can live in the moment[1]; and the phone is available in two sizes
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
- Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
- Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
- Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]
What HiLight settings actually control
HiLight is for notifications, not video controls. To configure it, use Settings → System → HiLight. Google says setup may require updating the Contacts app and marking people as favorites. If flash notifications are enabled, HiLight will not display for incoming calls. These settings affect the light and its contact cues; they do not change Google Photos.
Which should you use?
- To make a recap from your library: use Google Photos → Create → Highlight video.
- To see a visual cue for Gemini activity or a favorite contact’s call: use HiLight, if you have a listed Pixel 11-series model.
Google’s Photos instructions describe templates, assisted or manual selection, and edits to clips, music, and text. The HiLight materials describe notification cues and contact colors, not video-editing controls. The two features therefore are not competing options for making a video.

Music and availability caveats
Google says music accompanying content in Google Photos is for personal, non-commercial use only; its policy prohibits using that music for monetary gain. Check Google Photos Help for the current instructions and policy details before using a soundtrack in monetized content.

Some generative tools in Google Photos have separate eligibility requirements involving factors such as region, account, network, age, or backup status. Those restrictions should not be assumed to apply universally to the basic Highlight video workflow. Google’s help documentation says older devices may be unable to create highlight videos, but does not establish a full compatibility list. Google does not state that a Pixel phone is required for the Google Photos workflow.
