Google supports face unlocking on Pixel 7 and later, while Apple’s Face ID uses its TrueDepth camera system to capture depth and infrared data. For payments and app sign-in, the exact phone generation matters as much as the name of the feature.
At a glance: Pixel Face Unlock vs. Face ID
| What to compare | Pixel Face Unlock | Face ID on iPhone |
|---|---|---|
| Supported devices | Google says Face Unlock is available on Pixel 7 and later, including Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet. App sign-in and purchase approval are documented for Pixel 8 and later, including Fold. Google Pixel Help | Apple documents Face ID on supported iPhone models; the source material does not specify a full model list. Apple Support |
| How it reads a face | Google says setup captures face images from different angles to create a face model. Its reviewed help page does not specify a projected-dot depth-sensing system. | Apple says the TrueDepth camera projects and analyzes invisible dots, captures an infrared image, and creates a depth map. |
| Unlocking | Available on Pixel 7 and later devices. | Unlocks supported iPhones and uses attention-aware checks. |
| Apps and purchases | App sign-in and purchase approval are documented on Pixel 8 and later, including Fold. Pixel 7 and 7 Pro Face Unlock is not supported for Wallet tap-to-pay. | Can authorize Apple Pay, Apple media purchases, and sign-in to apps that support Face ID. |
| Published security comparison | Google warns that Face Unlock may be less secure than a strong PIN, pattern, or password; it does not publish a directly comparable probability on the reviewed page. | Apple reports a random-person probability below 1 in 1,000,000 for one enrolled appearance. This is Apple’s stated figure, not an independent head-to-head result. |
| Fallbacks | Use a PIN, pattern, or password; Google also recommends fingerprint unlock as another option. | Use the device passcode when Face ID requires it or does not authenticate. |
Which Pixel and iPhone models support the relevant features?
Pixel: unlocking is broader than app and purchase verification
Google says Face Unlock is available on Pixel 7 and later, including Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet. The documented scope expands on Pixel 8 and later, including Fold: those devices can also use Face Unlock to verify identity for app sign-in or purchase approval. Check the model rather than assuming every Pixel face-unlock feature works the same way. Google’s Pixel Face Unlock help page

iPhone: Face ID works with supported apps and Apple services
Apple says Face ID can unlock an iPhone, authorize Apple Pay and App Store, Book Store, and other Apple media purchases, and authenticate in apps whose developers support it. App sign-in therefore depends on the app offering Face ID support. Apple’s Face ID advanced technology page
How the two systems capture and process a face
Apple describes depth and infrared sensing
Apple says the TrueDepth camera projects and analyzes thousands of invisible dots to create a depth map and also captures an infrared image. A Neural Engine protected by the Secure Enclave transforms that information into a mathematical representation for comparison. Apple’s setup process includes two face scans. #1 Best Overall
- Attention-grabbing design meets the latest evolution of the Google Pixel Camera on the new Google Pixel 11 Pro; Gemini Intelligence helps manage details so you can live in the moment[1]; and the phone is available in two sizes
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
- Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
- Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
- Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]
Google describes enrollment images and an on-device face model
Google says Pixel setup captures images of your face from different angles to create a unique face model. Later face images may update the model, but Google says the images used to create it are not stored. The model is stored securely on the device. The reviewed Google help page does not establish that Pixel uses Apple’s projected-dot depth-camera method, so the two systems should not be described as having identical sensors. Google Pixel Help
Security: what the published claims do—and do not—show
Apple publishes a probability; Google gives a caution
Apple says the probability that a random person could unlock a device using Face ID is less than 1 in 1,000,000 with a single enrolled appearance, whether or not a mask is worn. Apple says that probability is higher for twins and siblings who look alike, and for children under 13. This is Apple’s own stated probability, published September 18, 2026; it is not an independently verified measurement or a result from a shared Pixel-versus-iPhone test. Apple Support

Google cautions: “Face Unlock may be less secure than a strong PIN, pattern or password.” It also notes that someone who looks very similar to you, such as an identical sibling, may be able to unlock the device, or another person might hold the phone up to your face. Google’s reviewed page does not provide a probability directly comparable to Apple’s figure. Google Pixel Help

Both retain a passcode fallback, with different documented checks
Apple says Face ID requires depth information and uses anti-spoofing neural networks. It is attention-aware and checks that your eyes are open. The iPhone requires a passcode in certain situations, including after a restart, a remote lock, or five failed face matches. Apple Support
Google offers “Require attention on screen” and “Always require confirmation” settings. It advises keeping the device secure and describes lockdown as an option for unsafe situations. Google also recommends fingerprint unlock as another way to authenticate when face recognition may not work reliably. Google Pixel Help
Payments and app authentication are not interchangeable
Pixel Wallet has a model-specific tap-to-pay exception
Google Wallet requires a screen lock and identity verification. Its listed methods are PIN, pattern, password, and Class 3 biometric unlock; it excludes Class 1 and Class 2 biometrics. Google specifically says Face Unlock on Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro is not supported for tap-to-pay. That exception should not be generalized to every Pixel generation: Google separately documents app sign-in and purchase approval through Face Unlock on Pixel 8 and later, including Fold. Wallet behavior depends on the device’s biometric class and transaction. Google Wallet Help Google Pixel Help

Face ID can authorize Apple Pay
Apple documents Face ID as an authentication option for Apple Pay. That establishes the feature’s documented use, not universal availability across every country, bank, or merchant. Apple Support
Low light, masks, glasses, and orientation
Apple documents broader challenging-condition support
Apple says Face ID is designed to work indoors, outdoors, and in total darkness, and with hats, scarves, glasses, contact lenses, and many sunglasses. Mask use is supported on iPhone 12 or later with iOS 15.4 or later, in portrait orientation. Apple says iPhone 13 and later with iOS 16 or later supports Face ID in landscape; earlier iPhones require portrait orientation. Google warns about lighting and face coverings
Google says Pixel Face Unlock may have trouble in insufficient light or when you wear a face covering or sunglasses. If those conditions are common for you, Google recommends setting up fingerprint unlock as well. Its troubleshooting advice also includes enrolling for your usual appearances and adjusting “Tap to check phone” or “Lift to check phone” if the phone activates unintentionally. Google Pixel Help
Privacy and accessibility controls
Both companies say face data stays on the device
Google says face processing happens securely on the device and the face model is not shared with Google services or apps. Apple says Face ID data does not leave the device and is unavailable to apps and Apple. These are each company’s descriptions of its own system. Google Pixel Help Apple Support
Attention settings involve a usability choice
Apple provides accessibility options during enrollment for people who cannot move their head through the full range, and lets users turn off Require Attention in accessibility settings. Google offers “Require attention on screen.” These controls change how face authentication is used; whether to enable them depends on the user’s needs and security preferences. Quick Recap
How to choose between them
- Choose based on the exact phone generation: Pixel 7 and later support unlocking, while Pixel 8 and later add documented app sign-in and purchase verification.
- Check payment needs separately: Pixel 7 and 7 Pro Face Unlock cannot be used for Wallet tap-to-pay; Face ID is documented for Apple Pay.
- Consider your usual conditions: Apple documents mask use on specified iPhones and software versions, while Google warns that coverings, sunglasses, and insufficient light can interfere.
- Use the security claims carefully: Apple’s stated probability and Google’s caution come from different kinds of evidence and cannot establish which system has the lower real-world error rate.
- Set up a fallback: Keep a passcode available, and consider fingerprint unlock on Pixel if face recognition may be unreliable in your routine.
