To prepare a Google Pixel for emergencies, review seven settings in the Personal Safety app and Settings → Safety & emergency: Emergency SOS, emergency contacts and medical information, Emergency Sharing, Safety Check, Car Crash Detection, Satellite SOS (on supported models and in supported locations), and public-safety and earthquake alerts. These are readiness tools, not a guarantee that the phone can reach emergency services or that help will arrive.
Most setup starts in Personal Safety or Settings → Safety & emergency. Check each feature’s model, permissions, network and location requirements, and decide what information you are comfortable making visible. Google’s instructions can change, so confirm the controls on your Pixel and consult the relevant Google Pixel emergency guide.

1. Emergency SOS: Choose what happens after a button press
Emergency SOS gives you a way to start configured emergency actions from the phone. On eligible Pixel phones, pressing the power button five or more times starts the SOS flow. Depending on your selected setting, you may need to hold inside the red circle or wait for a countdown to finish.
Set it up
- Open the Personal Safety app and choose Emergency SOS.
- Review and configure the actions available on your phone, then follow the on-screen instructions to save your choices.
- Learn the trigger and cancellation behavior shown during setup so you can distinguish an intentional activation from an accidental one.
Google lists Emergency SOS for Pixel 4a and later, including Pixel Fold. It does not work in airplane mode or while Battery Saver is on; Google Pixel Phone Help states, “Emergency SOS doesn’t work in airplane mode or when Battery Saver is on.” The button sequence can begin an SOS flow, but the actions it performs depend on your configuration and conditions at the time.

- Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
- Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]
2. Emergency contacts and medical information: Prepare what responders or trusted people may need
Add useful medical details—such as allergies or medications—and people you want contacted in an emergency. You can also choose whether emergency information is accessible from the lock screen.
Add and review your details
- Open Personal Safety and go to Your info.
- Add or update your medical information and emergency contacts.
- Decide whether to enable Show when locked for emergency information, then check what the lock-screen view exposes.
Anyone holding your phone can view the emergency information and lock-screen message when Show when locked is enabled. Weigh that access against the benefit of making key details available when you cannot unlock the device. A SIM or eSIM is needed for the phone to text an emergency contact later.
3. Emergency Sharing: Send your location and status to contacts
Emergency Sharing can send selected contacts your name, a Google Maps link to your real-time location, your remaining battery percentage, and any message you add. Set up emergency contacts first in Personal Safety.

Before you need it
- Confirm that the people you want to notify are listed as emergency contacts.
- Consider what a location link reveals and whom you are comfortable sharing it with.
- Know how to stop sharing manually. If you do not stop it, sharing ends automatically after 24 hours.
Location sharing depends on the phone being able to determine and transmit its location. Setting up contacts does not itself start a share or guarantee that a recipient will receive one.
4. Safety Check: Schedule a check-in for a situation that may become unsafe
Safety Check lets you schedule a time to confirm that you are safe. It can be useful when traveling alone, going for a run, or entering another situation where you want contacts notified if you do not check in.
Schedule a check
- In Personal Safety, open Safety Check.
- Select a reason, choose the time for the check (15 minutes to 8 hours ahead), and select contacts.
- At the scheduled check, respond within 60 seconds to mark yourself safe. If you do not, Emergency Sharing starts.
If the phone shuts down or loses signal, the check remains active and may share the last known location at the scheduled time. A supervised account for someone under the age of consent cannot use Safety Check.
5. Car Crash Detection: Check eligibility and permissions before driving
Car Crash Detection is designed to prompt you after a detected severe crash. If you do not respond within 60 seconds, the phone attempts an emergency call and shares your approximate location. It may miss crashes; high-impact activity can also trigger it. A weak network or an existing call can prevent it from contacting emergency services.

Enable and verify it
- Open Personal Safety and find Car Crash Detection.
- Follow the setup prompts and grant the required location, microphone, and physical-activity permissions.
- Review the feature’s status and the on-screen explanation of its response flow.
Google lists support for Pixel 4a and later, including Pixel Fold, and says a SIM is required. The feature does not work in airplane mode or while Battery Saver is on. Google also says it works only in the country of the phone’s SIM, not while roaming. Detection and a call attempt are not assured assistance: connectivity, circumstances, and the phone’s ability to recognize a crash all matter.
6. Satellite SOS: Verify your Pixel, service and surroundings
Satellite SOS is available on Pixel devices since Pixel 9, except Pixel 9a, according to Google’s current help page. The supported-country list includes the US, Canada, Puerto Rico, the UK, and listed European countries; eligibility and service availability can change. Check Google’s Satellite SOS help page and the status shown on your device rather than assuming the feature is available wherever you travel.

Check readiness
- Open Settings → Safety & emergency → Satellite SOS and check service status.
- Activate the feature on the device if prompted.
- Make sure Google Messages is set as the default messaging app.
- Use the demo in the Satellite SOS settings to learn the connection flow before an emergency.
A clear view of the sky matters: trees, buildings, terrain, and other obstructions can block the satellite connection. Model eligibility, supported location, activation, app setup, and the physical environment all affect whether it can work. A demo helps familiarize you with the process; it does not ensure a connection in a real emergency.

Wireless emergency alerts can include extreme-threat and severe-threat alerts, AMBER alerts, and public-safety messages. The available categories and controls vary by region, and some national alerts cannot be turned off.
Review wireless emergency alerts
Go to Settings → Notifications → Wireless emergency alerts to review the controls available on your Pixel. For details about regional options, see Google’s wireless emergency alerts guide.

Review earthquake alerts
Google says earthquake alerts are on by default, require Wi-Fi or mobile data, operate only in certain locations, and may not arrive for every nearby earthquake. Google identifies ShakeAlert as the source in California, Oregon, and Washington; Greece and New Zealand use the Android Earthquake Alerts System. Review the setting at Settings → Safety & emergency → Earthquake alerts. Availability and alert coverage are location-dependent, not a substitute for local emergency guidance.
Related setting: Emergency Location Service
Emergency Location Service (ELS) is different from voluntarily sharing your location through Google Maps. Review it at Settings → Location → Location services → Emergency Location Service. Where supported in your country or region and on your mobile network, and if it is not disabled, ELS can send location to first responders during an emergency call or text. Google cautions that carriers might still send location when ELS is off, so disabling the setting does not necessarily prevent carrier location sharing. See Google’s Pixel location settings guide.
Final readiness check
- Open Personal Safety and confirm your SOS actions, emergency contacts, medical information, and sharing preferences.
- Check that required permissions are granted for Car Crash Detection and that its eligibility conditions fit how you use the phone.
- Check Satellite SOS status and complete its demo if your device and location are supported.
- Review wireless and earthquake alert controls, plus ELS, with your region and connectivity in mind.
- Revisit these settings after changing phones, SIMs, accounts, travel patterns, or privacy preferences.
For model-level hardware details, Google provides Pixel phone hardware specifications. No setting can ensure a working network, successful location fix, feature trigger, or emergency response.
