Resolution tells you how many pixels form an image; refresh rate tells you how many times per second the display updates. More resolution can show finer detail, while a higher refresh rate can make supported scrolling and motion look smoother. They describe different things, and neither number alone determines overall display quality.
What does display resolution mean?
Resolution is the number of pixels across and down an image, usually written as width × height. More pixels can represent finer detail, provided the content has detail for the screen to show.
Screen size matters too: the same pixel count spread across a larger screen produces a lower pixel density. For example, Google lists the Pixel 9 at 1080 × 2424 pixels, 422 pixels per inch (PPI), and a 20:9 aspect ratio on its Pixel 9 specifications. These are specifications for that model, not a general measure for all phone screens.
What does refresh rate mean?
Refresh rate is how many times per second a display can update, measured in hertz (Hz). A 60 Hz display can update up to 60 times per second; a 120 Hz display can update up to 120 times per second. The maximum is a capability, not a promise that every app or video will use it.

Higher refresh rates are most relevant to motion: supported scrolling, animations, and other moving content can look smoother. How noticeable the change is depends on the device, content, app support, and the person viewing it; no single rate guarantees the same perceived benefit for everyone.
How can the refresh rate change while you use a phone?
Some phones adjust refresh rate based on what is on screen. Google calls its feature Smooth Display. Its support page says the rate can rise “For some content,” varies by supported Pixel model, uses more battery, and is disabled when Battery Saver is on. Google also notes that higher-refresh behavior is not available for all apps or content on its Pixel 9 specifications page.

Model specifications show why it is worth checking the exact device rather than assuming a universal range. Google lists these maximum ranges in its Pixel 10 comparison:
| Google model | Listed refresh-rate range |
|---|---|
| Pixel 10 | 60–120 Hz |
| Pixel 10 Pro | 1–120 Hz |
| Pixel 10 Pro XL | 1–120 Hz |
| Pixel 10 Pro Fold | 1–120 Hz |
These are manufacturer-listed specifications for the named models; they do not establish how every phone behaves. Google’s Smooth Display support information explains the feature and notes its battery tradeoff.
How should you compare two screens?
- For image detail: Compare resolution together with screen size or PPI. A resolution figure alone does not tell you how densely pixels are packed.
- For motion: Check the refresh-rate range and whether the device adapts the rate to content. A listed maximum may not apply in every app or situation.
- For phone battery use: Look for the manufacturer’s guidance on high-refresh settings. Google says Smooth Display increases battery usage, but does not give a universal battery-life penalty.
- For overall display quality: Consider other characteristics, including panel type and brightness, as well as the content and apps you use. Google describes Pixel phones as using OLED displays, but panel type alone does not establish which screen is better.
Why resolution and refresh rate are not interchangeable
Resolution is a spatial measure: how many pixels make up the image. Refresh rate is a time-based measure: how often the display updates. A higher resolution does not mean motion will look smoother, and a higher refresh rate does not add pixels or, by itself, make a still image more detailed. Use the specification that matches what you care about, then compare the rest of the display characteristics.
