Choose the screen saver for a charging-time clock, photos, weather, or home controls. Choose AOD for lock-screen information at a glance. They are separate features, and Google’s instructions do not establish an exact automatic handoff between them.
How the two displays differ
The practical distinction is when you want the phone to show information. A screen saver is an optional charging-time display you configure. AOD is a separate display setting for viewing the time and some other information when the screen is otherwise idle.

Google lists the screen saver types and setup options in its Pixel screen saver instructions. Its Pixel display settings help describes AOD as a separate setting.
Think of them as two different idle modes
A screen saver is designed around charging. You deliberately select a visual experience for a phone that is plugged in, placed on a charger, or sitting in a supported dock. It can be more expressive than a basic lock screen: a clock, a photo frame, weather, or controls for compatible smart-home devices.

AOD is designed around information at a glance when you are not actively using the phone. It is not a replacement for the configurable screen saver list. Turning AOD on does not add Photos, Pixel Weather, or Home Controls to the screen saver, and selecting a screen saver does not change the categories that At a Glance can show on AOD.
What a Pixel 9 screen saver can show
Clock and Home Controls
Choose Clock for a charging-time clock display. The larger, persistent presentation is useful when the phone is on a desk, bedside table, or upright charger and you want to read the time from across the surface.
Home Controls provides a way to access compatible home controls from the screen saver. Whether controls are available depends on the compatible services and devices configured on your phone. This option is most useful when the Pixel is positioned where you can safely reach it while it charges.
Photos, Pixel Weather, and compatible apps
The Photos option draws from Google Photos and requires access to photos and media. Review the permission prompt carefully: without the required access, the photo-based screen saver cannot use the images you intended to display. Your chosen Google Photos sources determine what appears, so select an appropriate collection if the phone will be visible to guests.
Pixel Weather can show weather information. Google says real-time updates require location permission set to Always allow. If you choose a less permissive location setting, weather may not update in real time or the option may not behave as expected. Location permission is therefore a functional requirement for live weather, not merely an optional personalization setting.
Compatible apps may offer their own screen saver content. The list can vary according to the apps installed and what those apps support. If an app does not appear in the screen saver picker, that does not indicate a problem with the Pixel 9; it may simply not provide compatible content.
Changing the order and switching types
You can switch screen saver types by swiping from the screen edge. The setup page also lets you review and reorder active screen savers. Reordering matters when you have more than one active option and want the most useful display to appear first. If you only want one predictable experience, leave a single type active rather than enabling several.
Recommended Free Tools
Use the built-in preview before leaving the settings page. A preview confirms that the selected layout, photo source, weather option, or controls look right without waiting for the phone to enter its charging state.
What appears on Always-on Display
AOD is not the same customizable charging display as a screen saver. Google describes it as a way to check the time and some other information while the screen is off. The information is tied to the lock-screen experience rather than to the screen saver types you choose under the charging settings.
At a Glance information eligible to appear on the lock screen and AOD can include:
Rank #2
- Made from the high quality tempered-glass for maximum scratch protection and no residue when removed
- 2.5D rounded edge glass for comfort on the fingers and hand
- 9H hardness, 99.99% HD clarity, and maintains the original touch experience
- Hydrophobic and oleo-phobic coating to reduce sweat and reduce fingerprints
- Include 3 pcs tempered glass screen protectors
- Upcoming events and tasks.
- Weather information and severe-weather warnings.
- Event tickets.
- Commute or transit information.
These categories are not a promise that every item will appear on every Pixel 9. Google notes that availability can vary by location, language, settings, and permissions. A calendar item, transit update, or ticket may therefore be absent because it is not supported in your region, because the relevant account or permission is missing, or because that category is disabled.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Enabling Pixel Weather for a charging display does not automatically enable every weather-related At a Glance update, and disabling one does not necessarily disable the other. Manage the two features in their respective settings.
The Pixel 9 wallpaper limitation
For Pixel 9 owners, one model distinction matters: Google’s current lock-screen help says showing the lock-screen wallpaper along with the date and time on AOD is available only on Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL. Do not expect that wallpaper-on-AOD option on a Pixel 9. The Pixel 9 can still show its supported time and lock-screen information, but the Pixel 10 Pro-specific wallpaper behavior should not be used as a setup target.
When the screen saver starts—and what is not specified
Google’s screen saver setup offers While charging and While upright and charging. It also describes an option to restrict the screen saver to wireless charging. These choices let you distinguish between any charging connection and the more specific situation in which the phone is standing upright on a charger.
A phone can use the feature while charging without a stand. Google specifically names Pixel Stand 1st and 2nd gen as charging or docking contexts, but neither stand is required simply to enable a screen saver. A stand is an optional way to keep the Pixel visible and upright; it is not a prerequisite for the menu or the charging-time display.
The reviewed Google instructions do not give a complete Pixel 9 timeline for transitions among the active lock screen, AOD, screen saver, and screen-off state. They also do not establish an exact delay or guarantee that AOD and a screen saver appear together or hand off to each other in a particular sequence. If you need a specific behavior, check it on your phone after setting your preferred options rather than relying on an assumed transition.
In practice, test the exact charger and placement you intend to use. A setting limited to wireless charging should not be expected to activate on a cable, and a setting limited to an upright charging position should be tested with the phone in that position. This verifies your configuration without assuming an undocumented timing rule.
Set up and adjust a screen saver
- Open Settings → Display & touch → Screen saver.
- Turn on Use screen saver.
- Choose the type you want, such as Clock, Photos, Pixel Weather, or Home Controls. If a compatible app is listed and you want its content, select that app’s option.
- Choose when it should show, such as While charging or While upright and charging.
- If the option is offered, choose whether to restrict it to wireless charging.
- Grant the permissions required by the selected type. For real-time Pixel Weather updates, set location permission to Always allow; for Photos, allow access to photos and media.
- Use Use screen saver to preview the display.
- Review and reorder active screen savers on the setup page if more than one is enabled.
Permission choices can affect both content and freshness. A Photos screen saver needs media access to display your selected images. Pixel Weather needs the documented location setting for real-time updates. If a preview is blank or incomplete, return to the relevant permission rather than repeatedly changing the display type.
Low-light behavior
In a dark room, check the screen saver’s low-light options. Google says it can switch to a low-light clock or turn the screen off when the room gets dark. This is a screen saver behavior that you can configure for a bedside or nighttime charging location. It is not a measured AOD battery comparison and should not be generalized to AOD.

Turn Always-on Display off or manage what it shows
To change AOD, open Settings → Display & touch and use the Always-on display setting. Google’s display settings guidance includes a control to turn it off. AOD has its own switch, so changing it does not select, remove, or reorder screen saver types.
To adjust At a Glance, touch and hold the date displayed on the screen to open its settings, then enable or disable available categories. Review the categories individually if you want weather, events, tickets, or commute information to appear—or if you want fewer items visible.
Notification visibility and sensitive lock-screen information have separate controls. Review those settings if you want to limit what can be read while the phone is idle. This is especially important when the Pixel is charging in a shared office, guest room, or other location where someone nearby could see the display.

Screen saver content can be more prominent because it may remain visible while the phone is charging. Choose photo sources with that placement in mind, and avoid enabling controls or images that you do not want displayed in public. For AOD, use the lock-screen and notification controls to limit sensitive information. The two privacy decisions are related to visibility but are configured in different places.
Which one should you use?
- Choose a screen saver if the phone spends charging time in view and you want a clock, personal photo display, weather, or home controls.
- Choose AOD if your priority is checking the time and eligible lock-screen information while the phone is idle.
- Use both deliberately if you want glanceable lock-screen information during ordinary idle periods and a different charging display when the phone is connected. Do not assume the phone will combine or hand off the two displays in a particular sequence; verify the behavior on your software version.
- Use the relevant privacy controls if you do not want particular notifications or At a Glance categories visible on the lock screen.
- For a dark room, adjust the screen saver’s low-light behavior if you use it while charging.
Common situations
Desk charging: A Clock screen saver is the straightforward choice when the Pixel sits in view. If you also want event or transit information when the phone is idle away from the charger, configure AOD and At a Glance separately.
Bedside charging: Use the screen saver’s low-light clock or screen-off behavior to reduce the visual impact in a dark room. Check notification and sensitive-information settings before leaving the phone face-up.
Photo display: Select Photos and grant media access. Confirm the Google Photos source before using the phone as a frame in a shared space.
Smart-home access: Choose Home Controls when compatible controls on a charging display are useful. The availability of individual controls depends on the compatible services configured on the phone.
Weather checking: Pixel Weather is the screen saver choice for a charging-time weather view. Set location to “Always allow” for real-time updates as Google documents. At a Glance weather and severe-weather information is a separate lock-screen/AOD category.
Common pitfalls and fixes
The screen saver never appears
Confirm that Use screen saver is enabled, then check the selected trigger. A screen saver set to While upright and charging may not appear when the phone is charging flat. Likewise, a wireless-only restriction will not apply to a cable connection. Test with the charger, orientation, and placement that match the selected conditions.

Photos are missing
Check that Photos has access to photos and media and that the intended Google Photos source is selected. A missing permission or an empty source can make the display appear incomplete even though the screen saver itself is enabled.
Weather is stale or unavailable
Verify that Pixel Weather has location permission set to Always allow for real-time updates. Also remember that weather shown by Pixel Weather as a screen saver and weather shown through At a Glance are different paths; changing one does not guarantee a change in the other.
AOD does not show a particular update
At a Glance content depends on location, language, settings, and permissions. Open At a Glance by touching and holding the date, then check whether the relevant category is enabled. A category can be enabled and still unavailable in a particular circumstance or region.
The display is too revealing
Use At a Glance and notification settings to disable categories or reduce sensitive lock-screen information. For a screen saver, choose a less personal clock or weather option instead of a photo collection or controls that expose information in a shared space.
The phone behaves differently from expectations
Google does not publish a complete Pixel 9 transition timeline covering active lock screen, AOD, screen saver, and screen-off states. Do not diagnose a normal variation as a defect solely because an assumed delay or handoff did not occur. Recheck the trigger settings and test the desired setup directly.

Battery-life claims: what can be concluded
The official guidance describes these features but provides no comparative Pixel 9 battery measurements. It does not establish how much battery either setting uses in a given situation, or that one saves a particular amount compared with the other. Choose based on the display behavior you want, and assess battery impact on your own phone rather than relying on an unsupported figure.
The screen saver is documented for charging or docking, so its intended context already includes an external power source. AOD is intended for idle, glanceable information. That difference explains why a charging display and an idle display should not be compared as though they were identical modes, but it still does not provide a numerical battery result.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a Pixel 9 screen saver and Always-on Display?
A screen saver is a configurable display used while the phone is charging or docked. It can show Clock, Home Controls, Photos, Pixel Weather, or compatible-app content. Always-on Display is a separate idle lock-screen display for the time and eligible information such as At a Glance updates.
When does the Pixel 9 screen saver turn on?
In Settings → Display & touch → Screen saver, you can choose While charging or While upright and charging. Google also documents an option to restrict it to wireless charging. The official instructions do not specify an exact delay after charging begins.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does a Pixel 9 need a Pixel Stand for the screen saver?
No. Google lists Pixel Stand 1st and 2nd gen as supported charging or docking contexts, but a stand is optional. The screen saver can be used while charging without a stand.

What can the Pixel 9 screen saver display?
The available types include Clock, Home Controls, Photos, Pixel Weather, and content from compatible apps. The exact list depends on the selected option and compatible software on the phone.
How do I show photos as a Pixel 9 screen saver?
Open Settings → Display & touch → Screen saver, enable Use screen saver, choose Photos, and grant access to photos and media. Select the desired Google Photos source, then preview the result with Use screen saver.
Why is Pixel Weather not updating in the screen saver?
Google says real-time Pixel Weather updates require location permission set to “Always allow.” Check that permission and distinguish Pixel Weather screen-saver content from weather categories managed through At a Glance.
Can Pixel 9 Always-on Display show my wallpaper?
Google’s current lock-screen help says showing the lock-screen wallpaper with the date and time on AOD is available only on Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL. Do not expect that wallpaper-on-AOD option on Pixel 9.
How do I turn off Always-on Display?
Open Settings → Display & touch and use the Always-on display control. This switch is separate from Use screen saver, so turning off AOD does not disable the charging screen saver.
How do I remove weather, events, or transit information from AOD?
Touch and hold the date shown by At a Glance to open its settings, then disable the categories you do not want. Notification visibility and sensitive lock-screen information have separate controls.
Can the screen saver and AOD run together or switch at a specific time?
Google’s published Pixel instructions do not specify a complete Pixel 9 transition sequence or exact handoff delay among the lock screen, AOD, screen saver, and screen-off states. Configure each feature separately and test the behavior on your phone.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What should I use in a dark bedroom?
If the phone is charging, review the screen saver’s low-light options. Google says the screen saver can switch to a low-light clock or turn the screen off when the room gets dark. This is not an AOD battery measurement.
Is Always-on Display or the screen saver better for battery life?
The official Pixel guidance provides no comparative Pixel 9 battery measurements, so it does not support a numerical winner. Choose according to whether you need an idle lock-screen glance or a charging-time display.
The Bottom Line
Use Pixel 9 Always-on Display for quick lock-screen information while the phone is idle; use the screen saver for a configurable display while charging or docked. The screen saver can provide Clock, Photos, Pixel Weather, Home Controls, or compatible-app content, while AOD can surface the time and eligible At a Glance information. Set permissions and privacy controls deliberately, and verify charging triggers on your own phone because Google does not document an exact Pixel 9 handoff timeline.
