Pixel 9 Pro Fold Review: An Excellent Foldable That’s Tempting Me

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold feels like the moment Google’s foldable ambitions start to click. After a first-generation model that had clever ideas but awkward hardware, this redesigned version is slimmer, taller, brighter, and far more comfortable to use as both a regular phone and a small tablet.

It still asks you to accept the usual foldable compromises: a high price, added weight, camera trade-offs versus the best slab phones, and software that sometimes depends on apps playing nicely with the larger inner screen. But the overall experience is much more convincing, especially if you already like Google’s Pixel approach to photography, AI features, and clean Android software.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

For anyone weighing it against Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold line or a traditional flagship like the Pixel 9 Pro XL, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is no longer just a curiosity. It’s a genuinely tempting foldable that makes a strong case for this form factor can be useful every day.

A Much Better Foldable Design

The biggest change with the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is that it no longer feels like Google is asking you to accept an awkward prototype in exchange for foldable novelty. The first Pixel Fold had charm, but its short, wide shape made it look unusual next to regular phones and bulkier than it needed to be in a pocket. This new model is taller, slimmer, and much closer to the proportions of a modern flagship when closed, which immediately makes it more approachable.

Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold, 256GB, Obsidian - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • The power behind AI on Google Pixel - Google Tensor G4 is Pixel’s fastest, most powerful chip yet. It powers Google’s AI for innovative camera features, seamless multitasking, and more help throughout the day.
  • Gemini. Your built-in AI assistant - Gemini helps you supercharge your ideas. Hold the power button to start writing, planning, learning, and more.
  • A camera that unfolds a world of creativity - With a flexible design, powerful triple rear camera system, and advanced AI, it’s easy to snap brilliant selfies, take incredible group pics, and add custom edits.
  • Opens smoothly, stands solidly - Use Pixel 9 Pro Fold lying flat or in multiple standing positions. And count on its sturdy hinge to hold up fold after fold.
  • Meet your new dream screens - Immerse yourself in entertainment and ease through daily tasks with the 80% brighter 8" Super Actua Flex inner display and 6.3" Actua outer display. The largest display on a phone.

The outer display is the most obvious improvement. Instead of feeling like a compromised cover screen you tolerate until you open the phone, it works like a normal smartphone display for messaging, maps, camera use, quick searches, and one-handed scrolling. That matters more than it might sound. A foldable lives or dies by how often you feel forced to open it, and the Pixel 9 Pro Fold makes the closed experience feel natural enough that opening it becomes a choice rather than a chore.

Google has also made the device feel more refined in the hand. The flatter frame, cleaner camera housing, and thinner profile give it a more premium, less experimental identity. It is still a large and expensive foldable, and you will still notice the weight compared with a Pixel 9 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max, but the balance is better than before. The hinge feels sturdy without being overly stiff, and the phone opens into a broad tablet-like canvas that feels genuinely useful rather than merely impressive in a demo.

There are still practical caveats. The inner display crease is visible at angles and can be felt when you run a finger across the center. Dust resistance remains a concern compared with traditional slab phones, and the long-term durability of any foldable hinge is something buyers should think about before spending this much. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold also does not erase Samsung’s lead in foldable maturity; the Galaxy Z Fold line still benefits from years of refinement, accessory support, and multitasking polish.

Even so, this redesign changes the conversation around Google’s foldable. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold now looks and feels like a device designed for daily use first, not just a showcase for flexible display technology. It is easier to carry, easier to use closed, and more convincing when opened. For anyone who liked the idea of the original Pixel Fold but hesitated because of its shape and bulk, this hardware is the first sign that Google is taking the category seriously.

Displays That Make the Foldable Format Shine

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold’s displays are where the redesign starts to feel less like a spec-sheet improvement and more like a daily quality-of-life upgrade. The outer screen is now much closer to a regular phone display, which makes a huge difference. Typing messages, checking maps, replying to email, scrolling through feeds, and taking quick photos no longer feel like you are using a compromised cover screen while waiting for a better experience inside. It is wide enough and natural enough that I found myself using it like a normal flagship phone for short tasks.

Open it up, and the large inner display is the main reason this device is so tempting. The 8-inch panel gives apps, websites, photos, spreadsheets, and videos room to breathe in a way a standard slab phone simply cannot. Reading long articles feels more like using a small tablet than stretching a phone interface. Google Photos is more enjoyable when browsing shots, YouTube looks great when propped up on a desk, and split-screen multitasking finally feels practical rather than cramped. The crease is still there if you look for it or drag your finger across the center, but it fades into the background quickly when you are focused on the content.

Brightness is another major strength. Both displays get bright enough for outdoor use, and that matters on a foldable because the inner display is something you actually want to use away from a couch or desk. Colors are punchy without looking wildly oversaturated, motion is smooth, and the overall presentation matches what I expect from a high-end Pixel. The inner screen’s size also makes the camera experience better: editing a photo, comparing shots, or reviewing a portrait immediately after taking it feels much more comfortable than on a smaller phone.

Where the big screen works best

  • Reading and browsing: articles, PDFs, and desktop-style web pages are easier to scan without constant zooming.
  • Multitasking: running two apps side by side, such as Gmail and Calendar or Chrome and Keep, is genuinely useful.
  • Media: videos, photos, and games benefit from the extra space, even if some content still shows black bars.
  • Productivity: documents, chats, and travel planning feel less constrained than they do on a traditional phone.

The caveat is that not every app takes full advantage of the inner display. Some apps still behave like enlarged phone apps, and others look awkward until you rotate the device or resize the window. Samsung still has an edge in mature foldable multitasking tools, especially for people who want more advanced window management. But Google’s approach feels cleaner and more approachable, and the improved hardware makes the entire concept easier to buy into. For the first time on a Pixel Fold, the displays do not just justify the form factor; they make the phone feel meaningfully different from a regular flagship.

Camera Quality and Pixel AI Features

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold’s camera system is good enough to feel like a real Pixel, even if it is not quite the same hardware showcase as the Pixel 9 Pro or Pixel 9 Pro XL. You get a versatile triple-camera setup with wide, ultrawide, and telephoto coverage, and Google’s computational photography does a lot of the heavy lifting. In daylight, photos have the familiar Pixel look: strong contrast, reliable exposure, natural skin tones, and enough detail that I rarely felt like I had compromised by choosing the foldable model.

The main camera is the one I trusted most. It handles quick shots well, locks focus reliably, and produces images that look ready to share without much editing. The ultrawide is useful for architecture, landscapes, and tight indoor spaces, though it is a step down in sharpness when lighting gets difficult. The telephoto lens is also handy, especially for portraits and travel shots, but it does not give the Pixel 9 Pro Fold the same long-range confidence as Google’s best slab phones. If camera quality is your absolute top priority, the non-folding Pro models still have the edge.

Low-light performance is where Google’s processing continues to make the phone feel special. Night Sight can pull bright, balanced images out of dim restaurants, city streets, and living rooms without turning every scene into an unrealistic daytime shot. Motion handling is not perfect, and the smaller sensors mean fast-moving kids or pets can still blur in poor light, but the hit rate is high for a foldable. Compared with Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold line, Google’s color science often feels more consistent and less aggressive, though Samsung can still win for punchier zoom shots and more camera controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The foldable design also makes the camera experience more flexible. You can use the outer screen as a viewfinder for higher-quality selfies with the rear cameras, prop the phone partially open for hands-free group shots, or review photos on the large inner display immediately after taking them. That big canvas is genuinely useful for checking focus, comparing edits, and deciding whether a shot is worth keeping. It is one of the areas where the foldable format adds something practical instead of just looking futuristic.

Pixel AI features that stand out

  • Add Me: This is one of the most memorable new tools, letting the photographer appear in a group photo by combining two shots. It works best when everyone stays still and the framing is deliberate, but when it lands, it feels genuinely useful rather than gimmicky.
  • Magic Editor: Moving subjects, resizing objects, and adjusting the background are easier on the larger inner display. The extra space makes edits feel less cramped than on a standard phone.
  • Best Take: Still helpful for group photos, especially when someone blinks or looks away. It is not something I use every day, but it can save shots that would otherwise be throwaways.
  • Audio Magic Eraser: For video, reducing wind, crowd noise, or background chatter can make casual clips more watchable, even if it cannot perform miracles in chaotic environments.

Video quality is solid, with good stabilization and pleasing color, but this is not where the Pixel 9 Pro Fold clearly separates itself from rivals. The results are dependable for family clips, travel, and social posts, yet Samsung and Apple still feel more polished for people who shoot lots of video. The larger issue is price: at this tier, it is fair to expect the very best cameras Google can offer. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold comes close in experience, but camera-focused buyers should know they are paying for the foldable design as much as for imaging performance.

Performance, Battery Life, and Everyday Use

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold feels much more like a polished flagship in daily use than Google’s first foldable did. Apps open quickly, multitasking feels fluid, and the transition between the outer screen and inner display is generally seamless. The Tensor G4 chip is not built to chase benchmark records in the same way as Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon chips, but for the way most people use a foldable—messaging, browsing, maps, video calls, photo editing, split-screen apps, and streaming—it holds up well.

Where the phone is strongest is consistency. Scrolling through Chrome, Gmail, Reddit, YouTube, and Google Photos feels smooth on both displays, and the larger inner screen makes common tasks feel less cramped. I especially liked using the Pixel 9 Pro Fold as a small tablet for travel planning, reading longer articles, editing photos, and keeping two apps open side by side. It is not quite a laptop replacement, but it does reduce the number of times I feel the need to grab another device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Gaming is solid, though this is one area where buyers should keep expectations realistic. Casual games and lighter 3D titles run without issue, and the inner display makes strategy games, cloud gaming, and emulators more enjoyable. Heavier games can push the Tensor G4 harder, and the phone may warm up during extended sessions. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold line still has an edge for sustained high-end gaming performance, especially if you care about frame rates over long play sessions.

Battery life has been dependable rather than outstanding. With mixed use across both screens, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold can get through a full day for me, but it is not the kind of phone I would confidently stretch deep into a second day. Using the big inner display heavily for navigation, video, gaming, or multitasking naturally drains it faster. If you mostly use the cover screen and unfold only when needed, endurance improves noticeably.

  • Typical daily use: Comfortable full-day battery life with messaging, browsing, camera use, music, and some inner-display time.
  • Heavy use: Expect to recharge before bedtime if you spend hours gaming, streaming, using hotspot, or running split-screen apps.
  • Charging: Adequate, but not class-leading; rival Android flagships still refill faster.
  • Thermals: Generally controlled, though the phone can get warm under sustained camera, gaming, or AI workloads.

Everyday ergonomics matter just as much as raw speed on a foldable, and this is where the redesign pays off. The cover display is finally comfortable enough to use like a regular phone, so you do not feel forced to open the device for every task. That changes the whole rhythm of using it. Quick replies, tap-to-pay, checking notifications, and one-handed browsing feel normal, while the inner display is there when you want more room.

The compromises are still present. It remains heavier and thicker than a traditional Pixel 9 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max, and you will notice that in a pocket. Cases add more bulk, and the charging speed does not match the premium price. Still, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold succeeds at the most valuable foldable trick: it feels practical when closed and genuinely useful when open. For day-to-day use, that balance matters more than winning every spec sheet comparison.

Software Experience on the Big Screen

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold’s hardware gets you in the door, but the software is what determines whether you keep opening it. Google has made the large inner display feel more useful than it did on the original Pixel Fold, especially for reading, browsing, maps, email, photos, and split-screen multitasking. It still feels like Android on a tablet more than a completely separate foldable operating system, but that simplicity is part of the appeal. Open the phone and most apps stretch naturally into a roomier layout without forcing you to relearn the device.

Multitasking is handled through the taskbar, which appears at the bottom of the inner display and gives quick access to pinned and recent apps. Dragging an app into split-screen is straightforward, and app pairs make it easier to jump back into common combinations like Chrome and Gmail, YouTube and Messages, or Calendar and Keep. This is where the Fold starts to justify itself in daily use: checking an address while replying to a text, comparing products across two browser windows, or taking s during a video call feels meaningfully better than on a slab phone.

Google’s own apps are generally the best showcase. Gmail uses the extra width for a two-pane view, Google Photos is excellent for browsing and light editing, and Maps feels far more comfortable when planning a route or scanning nearby places. The Recorder app, Pixel Screenshots, Gemini, Call Assist features, and Circle to Search also fit naturally into the broader Pixel experience. These features are not exclusive to the foldable form factor, but the larger screen makes several of them easier to use at the same time, which matters more than a flashy demo feature you only try once.

Where the software still falls short

The main caveat is app consistency. Many popular apps behave well, but some still treat the inner screen like an oversized phone display, with stretched layouts, awkward empty space, or controls that do not make great use of the wider canvas. Samsung still has an advantage here for power users, thanks to more mature windowing tools, deeper multitasking options, and years of refinement on the Galaxy Z Fold line. Google’s approach is cleaner and less cluttered, but it can also feel less flexible if you want floating windows, more aggressive task management, or a desktop-like workflow.

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold works best when you embrace it as a comfortable two-app device rather than a tiny laptop replacement. It is excellent for reading an article while chatting, browsing a menu while looking at a map, or keeping a document open next to an email draft. It is less convincing if your expectation is full tablet productivity in every app. Google has moved the experience forward, and the seven years of promised OS and security updates give it a strong long-term foundation, but the foldable app ecosystem still has some catching up to do.

How It Compares to Other Foldables

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold feels like Google finally stopped treating its foldable as an experimental side project and started aiming directly at Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold line. The biggest difference is the shape. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 6 is narrower on the outside, which makes one-handed use easier but can still feel cramped when typing or using apps on the cover screen. Google’s wider outer display behaves much more like a normal flagship phone, so I found myself opening it less often for quick replies, maps, music controls, and camera shots.

Once opened, the comparison gets more interesting. The Pixel’s inner display is excellent for reading, web browsing, editing photos, watching videos, and running two apps side by side. Samsung still has the more mature foldable software in some areas, especially if you rely on persistent taskbars, floating windows, deeper multitasking controls, or stylus support. Google’s approach is cleaner and more Pixel-like, but it is also less power-user-heavy. If you want a foldable to feel like a tiny tablet replacement, Samsung has the edge. If you want a phone that unfolds into a bigger, calmer canvas when needed, the Pixel feels more natural.

Category Pixel 9 Pro Fold Galaxy Z Fold 6
Outer screen Wider and more phone-like Narrower and easier to grip
Inner screen use Great for reading, media, and split-screen basics Stronger multitasking and productivity tools
Cameras Pixel processing, excellent stills, strong AI editing Reliable, versatile, more familiar foldable camera setup
Software style Clean, simple, Pixel-first Feature-packed and highly customizable
Best fit Phone-first users who want a larger screen Productivity-focused foldable fans

Against other foldables like the OnePlus Open, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold has a tougher fight. OnePlus set a high bar for thin hardware, fast charging, and multitasking flexibility, and it often feels more aggressive for the money. Google counters with its camera tuning, long-term software support, Pixel-exclusive AI tools, and a more cohesive Android experience. The OnePlus Open may appeal more to buyers who want maximum hardware value, while the Pixel is more compelling if you already like Google’s phones and want that same experience in a folding design.

Compared with traditional flagship phones such as the Pixel 9 Pro XL, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or Galaxy S24 Ultra, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is still a compromise. It costs more, is thicker and heavier, and its camera hardware is not quite as strong as the very best slab phones. But the foldable display changes how you use it in ways a regular phone cannot. Reading an article while referencing a message thread, reviewing photos on a larger canvas, using Google Maps with more room, or watching a video without feeling boxed in all make the format feel genuinely useful rather than just novel. Samsung remains the safer pick for foldable veterans, but Google now has the foldable I would recommend to Pixel fans without immediately adding a long list of excuses.

Who Should Consider Buying the Pixel 9 Pro Fold

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold makes the most sense for someone who already likes Pixel phones but has been waiting for Google’s foldable to feel mature. If you value a clean Android interface, excellent still photography, Google’s call screening and transcription tools, and a phone that can quickly become a small tablet, this is the first Google foldable that feels easy to recommend without a long list of design excuses.

It is also a strong fit for people who do a lot of reading, multitasking, navigation, email, document review, or photo editing on their phone. The outer display is usable enough that you do not feel forced to open the device for every task, while the inner screen gives you room to run two apps side by side, browse full desktop-style pages more comfortably, or treat Google Photos, Maps, Gmail, and YouTube as more spacious experiences. That balance is what makes the Pixel 9 Pro Fold feel less like a novelty and more like a practical everyday device.

Best fit for these buyers

  • Pixel fans who want a bigger canvas: If you like the Pixel software experience and camera processing, the Fold adds meaningful flexibility without moving you into Samsung’s ecosystem.
  • Productivity-focused phone users: The inner display is genuinely useful for multitasking, reviewing documents, managing calendars, and keeping a chat or notes app open beside another app.
  • Travelers and commuters: The combination of a large map view, strong translation features, entertainment-friendly display, and reliable cameras makes it a compelling travel phone.
  • Early adopters who still want polish: It feels more refined than Google’s first foldable, with better hardware proportions and fewer compromises in day-to-day handling.

There are still plenty of people who should pause before buying it. If your main priorities are maximum durability, the best zoom camera, fastest gaming performance, or the lowest possible price for flagship specs, a traditional slab phone will likely serve you better. The Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, Galaxy S24 Ultra, and iPhone 15 Pro Max all deliver excellent cameras and battery life in simpler, less expensive designs. They are also easier to case, easier to use one-handed, and less stressful to own if you are rough on your devices.

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold line remains the safer pick for buyers who want the most mature foldable software ecosystem, especially if features like advanced windowing, S Pen support, and deeper multitasking controls matter. Google’s approach is cleaner and more approachable, but it is not as dense with power-user options. That makes the Pixel 9 Pro Fold feel more like a Pixel that opens into a tablet, while Samsung’s Fold still feels more like a pocket computer for people who want to tune every part of the experience.

The price is the biggest practical hurdle. Even with the improved design, better displays, and more convincing software experience, this is still a premium foldable that costs much more than an excellent non-folding flagship. The smartest buyers will be those who know they will use the inner display every day, not just admire it during the first week. If that larger screen will replace some tablet time, make travel easier, or help you get more done from your phone, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is finally tempting for the right reasons.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Pixel 9 Pro Fold actually comfortable to use as a normal phone?

Yes, the redesigned outer display makes the Pixel 9 Pro Fold feel much closer to a regular flagship phone when closed. It is still thicker and heavier than a standard Pixel or iPhone, but the wider cover screen means you can type, browse, and use apps without constantly opening it.

How does the Pixel 9 Pro Fold compare to the Galaxy Z Fold 6?

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold has a more natural-feeling cover screen and Google’s clean Pixel software, while Samsung still has the edge in foldable-specific multitasking tools and years of refinement. If you want the most polished productivity features, the Galaxy Z Fold line is stronger, but if you prefer Pixel cameras, AI features, and a more phone-like outer display, Google’s foldable is very compelling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are the cameras as good as the Pixel 9 Pro or Pixel 9 Pro XL?

No, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold does not fully match Google’s best slab phones for camera hardware, especially in challenging zoom and low-light situations. That said, it still produces very good photos for a foldable, with reliable Pixel color processing, strong HDR, and useful AI editing tools.

Does the Pixel 9 Pro Fold have good battery life?

Battery life is solid for a foldable, but it depends heavily on how often you use the large inner screen. With mixed cover-screen and inner-screen use, it should get many users through a normal day, but heavy gaming, navigation, video streaming, or multitasking can drain it faster than a traditional flagship phone.

Who should buy the Pixel 9 Pro Fold instead of a regular flagship phone?

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold makes the most sense for people who want a phone that can double as a small tablet for reading, multitasking, maps, video, email, or travel use. If you mostly use your phone for quick messaging, photos, social apps, and one-handed scrolling, a Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, Galaxy S24 Ultra, or iPhone may be a better value.

Bottom Line

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold feels like the foldable Google should have made the first time: slimmer, brighter, more comfortable to use, and backed by software that makes the large inner display genuinely useful. Its cameras, clean Android experience, and improved hardware make it a compelling alternative to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold lineup, especially if you prefer Google’s approach to photos and AI features.
