Pinterest said an internal error caused it to over-enforce its content policies and mistakenly deactivate some accounts. The company apologized on May 13, 2025, and said it had reinstated many affected accounts, but it did not give a deadline for restoring everyone’s access.
What happened in Pinterest’s account deactivation mistake?
Pinterest’s May 13, 2025, statement said it had acted on content-policy violations, but an internal error led to over-enforcement and some accounts being deactivated by mistake. The company apologized for the frustration and said it was making improvements so it could respond faster when mistakes happen. Pinterest’s statement on Instagram and its post on X were reported the following day.

Contemporaneous reporting described users encountering account locks, unexplained suspensions, and removals of apparently benign Pins. Pinterest did not explain whether a human reviewer or an automated system triggered the incident, and its apology did not directly address claims that AI moderation was responsible. The available statement supports the company’s explanation of an internal error; it does not establish that AI caused it. The Verge’s report covered the incident and users’ experiences.
What happens when Pinterest deactivates an account?
Pinterest’s transparency report says a deactivated account loses access to its profile, Pins, and boards, and those items no longer appear to other users. The report describes Pinterest’s general enforcement process as using automated tools, manual review, or a combination of both; it does not identify which method was involved in the 2025 error. Pinterest’s Transparency Report explains these enforcement outcomes.

How to appeal a Pinterest account deactivation
- Check the notice. Review the deactivation message and any related Pinterest emails so you know what action was taken and can refer to the stated reason.
- Use Pinterest’s appeal or support flow. Explain why you believe the account or identified content did not violate Pinterest’s policies. Include relevant details from the notice and retain copies of your correspondence. Pinterest provides information about appeals in its Transparency Report.
- Wait for a response and keep the record. Pinterest said it had reinstated many accounts after the 2025 error, but did not publish a completion deadline or guarantee restoration for every account.
Is a temporary login block the same as account deactivation?
No. Pinterest separately warns that limits triggered by suspicious activity can affect users unintentionally. Those temporary blocks may clear automatically after 30 minutes; that guidance is for a temporary access restriction, not a deactivated account. See Pinterest’s account suspension help page for its guidance.
What Pinterest’s enforcement figures do—and don’t—show
Pinterest publishes appeal and enforcement statistics, but figures from different periods and categories should not be treated as a measurement of the 2025 mistaken-deactivation incident.

| Figure | What it covers |
|---|---|
| 18,913 spam appeals; 6,225 reinstatements | Pinterest figures for the reporting period specified on its P2B policy page. They are spam-appeal statistics, not a count of accounts affected by the 2025 error. |
| Appeals addressed in fewer than two days on average | Pinterest’s average for the same reporting period on its P2B policy page; this is not a promised resolution time for an individual appeal. |
| More than 95% of Pins deactivated for health misinformation were never seen by users | Pinterest’s figure for Q4 2025, as reported in its H2 2025 Transparency Report. It concerns health-misinformation Pins, not the 2025 account-restoration rate. |
