If ping works but HTTPS doesn’t—or you can ping the server but the website won’t load—the ping result proves very little about the web request. Ping generally tests ICMP echo; loading a site also depends on the hostname’s DNS answer, a TCP connection to port 443, proxy and firewall policy, TLS negotiation, certificate validation, and an HTTP response. Work through those stages in order to locate where the request stops.
What a successful ping does—and doesn’t—tell you
A successful ping is a narrow reachability clue: an ICMP echo request and reply passed between your device and the address you pinged. It does not show that the hostname in your browser resolves to that address, that TCP port 443 is reachable, or that a web server can complete HTTPS. Firewalls can also treat ICMP and HTTPS traffic differently. Microsoft’s DNS client troubleshooting guidance notes that ICMP must be allowed through a firewall for ping to work; conversely, a failed ping does not by itself prove that a website is unreachable.

HTTPS failures occur at different stages. A DNS lookup can fail before a connection is attempted; a TCP connection can time out or be refused; a proxy can reject a request; TLS can fail during negotiation; certificate validation can reject the connection; or the server can return an HTTP error after the connection succeeds. These outcomes need different fixes. An HTTP 404 or 500, for example, is not the same kind of failure as a TLS handshake error.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteStart with the exact symptom and hostname
Before changing settings, note the full URL and hostname, the exact browser or command-line error, when it occurred, and whether the problem affects one site or every HTTPS site. Record whether it happens on one device or several, and whether a VPN, proxy, or managed network is in use. A specific error such as “name not resolved,” “connection timed out,” or a certificate warning points to a different stage.

Check that the hostname is spelled correctly and is the one you intend to reach. A ping to a known IP address does not test DNS for a website hostname. Resolve the exact hostname in the URL, including any subdomain, and record the results. If the same hostname resolves differently on different networks, keep both answers for comparison rather than changing DNS immediately. A typo or a missing DNS record can prevent a site from resolving, as described in Cloudflare’s DNS troubleshooting guide.
Use tests that correspond to each layer
| Test | What it checks | What a failure may indicate | What it cannot prove |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ping | ICMP echo to the address you specified | ICMP may be blocked, or the destination may not reply | It does not verify hostname DNS, TCP/443, a proxy, TLS, certificates, or an HTTP response |
| DNS lookup | Whether a resolver returns an address for the requested hostname | A typo, missing or incorrect record, or resolver-specific difference | It does not prove that the returned address accepts HTTPS |
| TCP connection to port 443 | Whether a TCP connection can be established to the HTTPS endpoint | A timeout or refusal can point to routing, firewall policy, or a service that is not listening at that endpoint | It does not test TLS negotiation, certificate trust, or the web application |
curl -v https://HOST/ |
The HTTPS request and the stage reported by curl | Output may stop at name resolution, connection, proxy, TLS, certificate validation, or show an HTTP status | It does not by itself identify which network component caused the failure |
| Browser developer tools | Request-level details from the browser | A failed request or returned status can help distinguish a network error from an application response | It does not by itself establish the cause outside the browser |
Use the exact hostname in the URL with curl, replacing HOST with the target hostname:

curl -v https://HOST/
Read the output from the beginning and note the last successful stage, rather than treating every failure as “the server is down.” The curl manual documents HTTPS requests and proxy behavior. If curl says HTTPS is unsupported, that may reflect a build without SSL support rather than a problem at the destination; check the client build as described in the curl FAQ. On Windows, curl is commonly available, but availability and TLS backend vary by installation, so note the platform and client version when comparing results.
Follow the failure to its likely layer
If the hostname does not resolve
Verify the spelling and resolve the exact hostname you are requesting. Compare resolver results from another approved network or device if available, and save the answers and time of each lookup. Different answers narrow the investigation to DNS or network differences, but do not establish which record or resolver is wrong. Avoid substituting a guessed IP address: HTTPS identity and certificate checks depend on the hostname, and the web service may use host-based routing.

If resolution succeeds but port 443 times out or is refused
This points to a connection problem before TLS. A timeout can be consistent with routing or firewall policy; a refusal can indicate that the endpoint is reachable but not accepting a connection on that port. Neither result alone identifies the responsible device or administrator. Ask the network administrator or hosting provider to check the relevant inbound or outbound firewall rules, routing, and whether the service listens on the expected endpoint. A successful ping does not establish TCP/443 reachability.
If the request fails at a proxy
Check which proxy the browser or curl is configured to use and whether the hostname should be covered by an approved bypass rule. A proxy can affect the request independently of direct network connectivity. curl also distinguishes verification of an HTTPS proxy from verification of the destination server; see the curl manual when interpreting proxy-related output. On a managed or inspected network, involve the administrator rather than permanently disabling security software or changing bypass rules without approval.

If TLS negotiation or certificate validation fails
Once a TCP connection is established, an HTTPS handshake can still fail. Check whether the certificate covers the requested hostname, is valid and active, and chains to a certificate authority trusted by the client. Protocol compatibility and TLS inspection by a proxy or security product can also matter. Cloudflare describes certificate, protocol, and network-interference possibilities in its guidance on SSL protocol errors and general SSL errors.
For hostname-coverage problems, compare the exact hostname that fails with the names covered by the certificate; a multi-level subdomain may not be covered when a different hostname works. If the error occurs only on one client, investigate its trust store and supported protocols as well as the destination certificate. curl’s CA certificate documentation explains how it verifies server certificates. Do not use --insecure or disable certificate validation as a repair: that suppresses an identity and trust check instead of fixing it.

If HTTPS returns an HTTP status
If curl or the browser reaches the server and receives an HTTP status, the HTTPS connection progressed beyond DNS, TCP, and TLS. A 4xx or 5xx response is an application or server response to investigate separately; preserve the status and any response details for the site operator. It is not evidence that ping or HTTPS transport is failing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Compare networks and devices without over-interpreting the result
If permitted, try the same URL from another device or approved network, keeping the hostname and time of comparison. A successful result on one path and failure on another narrows the possibilities to differences such as resolver answers, network policy, proxy behavior, security software, or client trust. It does not prove which one is responsible. Record the comparison rather than making several changes at once; changing multiple settings can obscure which difference mattered.
Escalate with evidence
Send the person responsible for the site or network enough information to reproduce the failure: the exact URL and hostname, timestamp and time zone, exact error text, client and operating system, browser or curl version, and whether a VPN, proxy, or managed network was active. Include DNS answers, relevant curl verbose output, and the results of any device or network comparison. Remove credentials, cookies, tokens, and sensitive request data before sharing logs or browser diagnostic archives.

For symptoms suggesting a path problem, such as timeouts or packet loss, a network administrator may use traceroute or MTR. Packet capture may be appropriate for resets or handshake failures when deeper analysis is needed.
