To keep an app in the foreground on a Fire tablet, enable App Pinning in the Adult Profile, open the app, then select its pushpin in the Task Switcher. To leave the pinned app, use the exit gesture or button combination that matches your tablet’s navigation mode; the device may ask for its lock-screen credential.
Before you start: check the profile and setting
Amazon staff’s documented setup starts in the Adult Profile: open Settings > Parental Controls and select App Pinning. Amazon describes this as a device setting, not a separate app or purchase. Menu labels and availability can differ by model, Fire OS version, and profile, so this path is not guaranteed to appear on every tablet.

Amazon’s parental-controls guidance distinguishes adult-profile restrictions from child-profile settings: Amazon parental controls. - Switch to the Adult Profile and open Settings > Parental Controls.
- Turn on App Pinning. If the setting is absent, the available documentation does not establish that the feature is supported on your model or software version.
- Open the app you want to keep on screen.
- Open the Task Switcher. In Amazon staff’s instructions, this is the square button.
- Find the app in the Task Switcher and tap its pushpin icon. Amazon staff describes the procedure in its App Pinning instructions.
How to unpin the app
Use the exit action that matches your tablet’s navigation mode. Amazon staff says gesture navigation users can swipe up from the bottom of the screen and hold. With button navigation, a forum reply describes pressing and holding Back and Task Switcher together. If prompted, enter the device’s lock-screen PIN, pattern, or password. The exit instructions are in the Amazon forum thread.

A lock-screen credential is different from the parental-controls password. Amazon’s user guide material discusses requiring a screen lock to unpin, and Amazon support distinguishes that credential from the parental-controls password: Amazon parental-controls help. If the tablet asks for a password while exiting, check whether it is requesting the lock-screen credential rather than the parental-controls password.

Amazon staff also describes an optional Disable Touch setting. When enabled, it disables touch input in the pinned app until the app is unpinned. This can help prevent accidental taps, but it does not guarantee that playback or every other interruption is prevented; a forum discussion notes that a video may still be paused while its app remains in the foreground: Amazon forum discussion.

If App Pinning does not appear or will not exit
- Setting missing: Confirm you are in the Adult Profile and check Settings > Parental Controls. Labels and feature availability may vary; the available official documentation does not provide a current model-by-model compatibility list.
- Exit gesture does not work: Identify whether the tablet uses gesture or button navigation and try the matching method above.
- Credential prompt appears: Try the screen-lock PIN, pattern, or password if the prompt is for the device lock. Do not substitute the parental-controls password unless the tablet specifically asks for it.
