The documented Rev B board uses a Microchip MCP2515 CAN controller and MCP2551 transceiver, and exposes a SocketCAN interface named can0. SK Pang’s product listing specifies Raspberry Pi 2–3 compatibility; that documentation does not establish support for every later Pi model.
What PiCAN 2 does for Raspberry Pi OBDII logging
PiCAN 2 is an add-on CAN interface, not a standalone OBDII scanner or dashboard. It gives a compatible Raspberry Pi a way to connect to a CAN network; software on the Pi can then capture frames and, with appropriate OBDII requests and decoding, turn supported vehicle data into useful values. The board’s presence alone does not guarantee that a vehicle exposes every parameter or that a logger will decode it.

SK Pang’s product listing identifies the board as PiCAN2 CAN-Bus Board for Raspberry Pi 2–3, SKU RSP-PICAN2, and describes DB9 and screw-terminal connections plus OBDII-cable compatibility: SK Pang PiCAN2 product listing. The guide for PiCAN 2 Rev B specifies CAN v2.0B up to 1 Mb/s, a 10 MHz SPI interface, standard and extended data/remote frames, and a Linux SocketCAN interface called can0: SK Pang PiCAN 2 Rev B V1.3 guide.

How do I connect PiCAN2 to OBDII?
Use a cable whose DB9 wiring matches the board’s OBDII configuration. The Rev B guide distinguishes OBDII from general CAN cabling: the DB9 pin assignments are different, so a generic CAN cable should not be assumed to have the correct OBDII map.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Power down before changing wiring. Check the board revision and its guide before connecting the Pi or vehicle. The manufacturer guide’s pin and bridge instructions are revision-specific.
- Set the DB9 solder bridges for OBDII. For OBDII cable use, the guide says to close the left-side solder bridges SJ1, SJ2 and SJ3. Its general CAN-cable setup uses the right-side bridges instead.
- Check the documented OBDII pin map. The guide assigns DB9 pin 2 to ground, pin 3 to CAN_H, pin 5 to CAN_L and pin 9 to +Vin on the SMPS version. Do not substitute its separate general CAN-cable mapping: pin 3 ground, pin 7 CAN_H, pin 2 CAN_L and pin 9 +Vin.
- Confirm power and termination for the specific setup. The guide describes a 120-ohm terminator fitted on the board and enabled by adding a two-way header at JP3 and inserting a jumper. Whether termination is appropriate depends on network topology; do not enable it automatically for every OBDII connection. Its 6–20 V input and 5 V, 1 A output specifications apply to the documented SMPS variant only.
- Connect using the verified cable and bring up the CAN interface. Confirm the Raspberry Pi model, board variant and software configuration before powering the setup. Avoid treating any one terminal count as universal: the product listing describes a three-way screw terminal, while the Rev B guide describes a four-way terminal.
The manufacturer warns that counterfeit PiCAN2 boards circulate and recommends purchasing through authorized distributors. Verify the source and documentation for the actual unit, particularly if its revision or included power circuitry is unclear.
Is PiCAN2 compatible with Raspberry Pi 3?
Yes: the cited SK Pang listing names Raspberry Pi 2–3 compatibility, and the Rev B guide describes the board for Raspberry Pi 2. This is evidence for those named models, not a blanket compatibility statement for every Raspberry Pi generation. Check the current documentation for the exact board revision and Pi model before buying or installing it; the cited material does not confirm newer-model compatibility.

How do I configure the software and start capturing CAN data?
The 2016 Rev B V1.3 guide documents a historical Linux setup: enable SPI, configure an MCP2515 device-tree overlay with a 16 MHz oscillator and GPIO25 interrupt, then raise can0 at the bitrate required by the bus. It demonstrates the cansend and candump utilities and notes that applications can be written in C or Python. These are guide examples, not assurance that the same configuration steps work unchanged on current Raspberry Pi OS releases. Check current OS and driver support before copying the older instructions.
At a high level, the workflow is:
- Enable SPI using the configuration method supported by the installed Raspberry Pi OS.
- Configure the MCP2515 device tree settings for the actual board and its documented oscillator and interrupt wiring.
- Bring up
can0with a bitrate appropriate to the connected CAN bus. - Use a CAN capture tool such as
candumpto verify traffic is visible before attempting to interpret it. - Run a logger or application that issues appropriate OBDII requests, decodes responses and records the fields you need.
The guide includes a cansend example using ID 7DF and data 02 01 05, which it identifies as a coolant-temperature request. That is an example from the guide; it does not establish that every vehicle will respond or provide the same data.

What can a Raspberry Pi OBDII logger record?
A surfaced project description for a Raspberry Pi 3 with PiCAN2 SMPS, an OBDII cable and a display describes saving sample values to CSV on an SD card. Listed fields include timestamp, message count, temperature, RPM, vehicle speed and throttle position. It also notes that available values depend on vehicle type. This example shows a possible logging pattern, not a guaranteed data set or a currently verified, step-by-step setup guide.
Separate the stages when troubleshooting: seeing CAN frames means the electrical and interface path is working well enough to capture traffic, but it does not prove that the OBDII request is valid, that the vehicle supports the requested parameter, or that the logger’s decoder interprets the response correctly. Check vehicle support and application behavior rather than assuming the board itself supplies a ready-made dashboard.
