Pi Rain Radar turns recent radar images into an animated map you can glance at to judge where a rain band may be heading. It can help you decide whether to take a closer look at the weather, but the map shows observed rain—not a guaranteed prediction that rain will reach your location.
What Pi Rain Radar shows
Creator Alex Soul describes the display as showing “the last couple of hours of observed rain moving across the map” so viewers can make their own call about its direction. The project downloads radar frames, processes and caches them, then plays them in a browser-based display. Its focus is narrower than a conventional weather dashboard: watch the recent movement of precipitation rather than rely on a single forecast icon.

Animation can make a rain band’s recent path easier to interpret, but it cannot establish with certainty where the band will go next or whether it will bring rain to a particular street. The map is historical radar imagery, not by itself a meteorological nowcast. Technical coverage reports that a next-hour forecast is available separately through an optional OpenWeather integration requiring an eligible API key; check the current project instructions and provider terms before configuring it. Tom’s Hardware’s project overview describes that distinction.

Coverage reports that Pi Rain Radar can continue playing its last cached frames if its data feed goes down, and that it indicates when data is delayed. That keeps the display from immediately going blank, but it does not make the imagery current: the animation represents the last frames received.

- Check any delayed-data indicator before using the display to make a decision.
- Do not treat a blank map or an old frame as evidence that conditions are currently dry.
- When timing matters, verify conditions with a current local weather source.
Run it on a Raspberry Pi or another Docker host
A dedicated Pi can power a permanently placed display, but the project is not limited to that arrangement. Alex Soul says one host can serve several browser-based screens around a home, with individual layouts, themes, and widget choices. The creator also says an existing Docker host can serve those screens, so buying a new Raspberry Pi is optional.
| Option | What it suits | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Dedicated Raspberry Pi | A self-contained display that can stay in one convenient spot. | Requires buying and setting up hardware if you do not already have it; confirm current compatibility before purchasing. |
| Existing Docker host | Trying the project without adding a separate Pi, with browser screens on devices on the home network. | The host needs to be available when you want the display; the cited sources do not establish a particular host’s performance or data-provider coverage. |
The technical overview reports ARM64 and AMD64 Docker images. It also reports a recommended dedicated setup of a Raspberry Pi 4 with 2GB RAM and a 1280×720 touch display. Treat those as reported project details, not a guarantee that every current release or display connection is compatible. Before buying, check the Pi Rain Radar repository for current hardware guidance, release information, and installation steps. The repository was linked by the creator, but its current instructions were not independently confirmed in the cited coverage.

Decide whether the display fits your needs
- You want a quick visual read of recent rain: An animated observed-radar map may help you judge the direction of a rain band at a glance.
- You need a forecast rather than recent observations: Use a current forecast source; the main radar animation should not be mistaken for one.
- You already run Docker at home: Consider using that host first, then view the display in a browser on your home network.
- You want an always-available screen: A dedicated Pi and display may suit a fixed location, subject to the current project’s hardware instructions.
Local radar availability and data-feed coverage depend on the providers and configuration supported by the project. The available coverage does not establish comparative accuracy among providers, so check which data source serves your location before relying on the display.

Check current instructions before installing
The technical overview described the project as pre-release version 0.4.1 at the time it was published, noted inconsistent version references in its documentation, and said it had not completed a prolonged soak test. Those are time-sensitive reports, not a statement of the project’s current release status. Use the repository’s current release and installation instructions rather than copying older commands or assuming that the reported version remains current.
