Pi can act as the coding-agent interface, while OmniRoute routes requests to configured providers; the pi-omniroute-sync extension can bring connected models into Pi’s picker. But that setup does not, by itself, make GPT Sol or Claude Opus free. Whether either model costs nothing depends on the exact model ID, provider account, and entitlement behind the route. The headline describes one user’s setup, not a general promise of free access.
How Pi and OmniRoute fit together
Pi is the coding-agent interface: it lets you choose a provider and model for agent requests. OmniRoute is a routing layer that connects configured providers and models. The pi-omniroute-sync extension can synchronize models available through a running OmniRoute server into Pi’s normal model picker.

That synchronization is a convenience, not an access grant. You still need a running server and configured providers, and each provider’s account, quota, and terms govern whether requests work and what they cost. OmniRoute’s project overview links to its setup, configuration, CLI integration, and architecture documentation.

There are three separate costs to consider: the software, the provider access, and the model inference. Pi and OmniRoute can provide the software layer, but using them does not waive a provider’s charges or create a free entitlement for a particular model.

- Free software: The agent, router, or extension may be available without a software fee. That does not mean provider requests are free.
- Free provider allowance: A provider may offer a quota or promotional credit, subject to its own eligibility rules, limits, and terms.
- Paid model access: A model may require a paid subscription or API entitlement even when it appears in a routing catalog or picker.
Pi’s package page labels Anthropic and OpenAI as paid options and separately presents free-provider and local routes. Its no-key quick setup presents Groq, Gemini, and Ollama options. These are documented package instructions, not evidence that the named GPT Sol and Claude Opus models are free through those paths.
Why the model names do not establish free access
The available project and package pages do not identify the exact GPT Sol or Claude Opus model IDs in the headline, the provider accounts used, or the entitlements attached to them. A model appearing in a picker—or having a price displayed as zero—does not prove that the upstream service will provide it at no charge.

The extension listing says it uses OmniRoute pricing metadata and may fall back to a zero-cost value when pricing is unavailable. That fallback is a display behavior, not confirmation of free upstream usage. Check the provider’s current billing and quota terms for the precise model and account route before relying on a zero price.
What the published free-tier totals do—and do not—show
OmniRoute’s free-tier documentation reported an estimated 1.51 billion recurring free tokens per month across 42 deduplicated pools in a June 17, 2026 snapshot. It also estimated about 2.13 billion tokens in the first month when one-time signup credits were included. Those are project-published aggregate estimates, not audited guarantees, and the one-time credits are not recurring monthly capacity. They do not establish that any individual user can access those pools, or that either named model is included. Provider tiers and terms can change.

Setup checks before you rely on the route
- Install Pi using its documented package instructions. The package page shows installation examples for
pipx,uv, andpip, and describes provider and model selection. Follow the current instructions on the pi-coding-agent package page. - Configure the provider in OmniRoute. The router can only expose models for providers you have configured and can authenticate with; consult the project’s current setup and configuration documentation linked from the OmniRoute repository.
- Run the OmniRoute server, then install and configure the Pi sync extension. The extension listing says a running OmniRoute server is required before it can synchronize connected models into Pi’s picker.
- Verify the exact model and billing route. Match the selected model ID to the provider’s current terms, quota, and billing details. Do not infer free usage from the model’s display name or a missing price value.
Review the extension before installing it
Pi’s package directory warns: “Pi packages can execute code and influence agent behavior. Review the source before installing third-party packages.” The pi-omniroute-sync listing showed version 1.2.0, published September 7, 2026. Treat that as a dated listing, and review the package source and permissions before granting it access to an agent environment.
