The lower-cost choice depends on the same game’s current price, whether you can buy or resell a disc, and the terms and sale prices of the digital store. Compare the same title, edition, platform, and region rather than assuming one format always wins.
How to compare the real cost of one game
Compare the same title, edition, platform, and region on the same date. A new physical copy and a digital deluxe edition, for example, are not like-for-like prices. Add the costs that actually apply to you, such as shipping or tax, and use current offers rather than predicting future discounts.

- Record the current digital price and the price of a new physical copy.
- Check the price of a used physical copy in the condition you would accept.
- Include shipping and applicable tax for each option.
- For physical, subtract only a realistic estimate of resale proceeds if you expect to sell the game. Resale value depends on the title, condition, platform, and market when you sell; it is not guaranteed.
- For digital, use the actual sale price available to you and consider the store’s purchase and refund terms.
- Account for hardware: if playing discs requires a drive your device does not have, include its cost. If you already have a compatible drive, do not count it again.
A useful estimate is: physical net cost = purchase price + shipping and tax − likely resale proceeds. Digital cost is the digital purchase price plus applicable tax. These estimates are useful only for that game and those buying conditions; no representative average lifetime cost across games or regions is established.

You find a lower-priced new or used copy
Retailer discounts and used listings can make a physical copy cheaper than the digital version at the time you buy. Compare the exact platform and edition, and include shipping, tax, and the condition of a used copy. A lower shelf price does not necessarily mean a lower delivered price.
#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
You resell the game after playing
A physical copy may retain resale value, reducing its net cost. The amount depends on demand, condition, and the market when you sell, so do not treat a particular recovery percentage as typical without evidence for that specific game. If you keep games or give them to someone else, resale does not reduce your own cash cost.
When digital games can cost less
The digital sale beats the physical offer
Digital can be the cheaper option when a store’s sale price is lower than the best comparable physical price. Compare current offers: future sales are uncertain, and a digital discount does not establish that the format is generally cheaper.

- Challenge others anytime, anywhere, whether you're on the couch or on the go
- Play any way you want—locally, online, in TV mode, Tabletop mode, Handheld mode, or even with GameCube Controllers

Your setup makes discs costly or inconvenient
Digital avoids handling and storing game discs. Conversely, disc play may require a compatible drive. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission noted that a PC player may need an external disc player to use disc games; whether that adds cost depends on the player’s device.
Sticker prices and hardware are different comparisons
Prices can differ by publisher, platform, retailer, and region. Nintendo says its retail partners set their own prices for physical Switch 2 titles. Nintendo also says that, beginning in May 2026, digital MSRP can differ from physical MSRP for specified new Nintendo-published titles exclusive to Switch 2. That is a limited example, not a rule for all games.

Hardware prices should not be mistaken for game-price comparisons. In an observation dated January 23, 2025, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission reported an Australian standard PS5 RRP of A$799.95 and a digital-model RRP of A$679.95—a A$120 difference, or about 18%. Those figures concern console hardware in Australia at that date, not the cost of games or current prices elsewhere. See the ACCC’s 2025 Digital Platform Services Inquiry report.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Digital purchases and refunds depend on store terms
Digital purchases are subject to the relevant platform’s terms, which can differ by store and country. PlayStation’s U.S. terms describe access to digital content as a limited license and state that language such as “buy” or “ownership” does not transfer ownership of the content or intellectual property. That describes PlayStation’s terms, not a universal legal rule. Read PlayStation’s U.S. terms of service for the applicable wording.
Refund eligibility also differs. Nintendo’s U.S. policy generally treats digital-product payments as final unless Nintendo authorizes a refund or applicable law requires one; its U.S. refund policy explains the policy. PlayStation describes conditional eligibility for digital-store refunds and notes that local law may provide additional rights; check its U.S. refund guidance. These examples are U.S.-specific: consult the current terms and consumer rights for your country and store.
Quick Recap
Which format should you choose?
- Choose physical when its same-game price is lower after delivery costs, or when a plausible resale later makes its net cost lower.
- Choose digital when the current digital offer is cheaper, or when avoiding discs and storage is worth the price difference to you.
- Recheck the comparison if the editions differ, a drive must be purchased, or store terms and local refund rights affect your decision.
