Physical Gold vs. Gold ETFs: Costs, Risks, and Liquidity Compared

Physical gold offers direct possession but adds premiums, storage and resale logistics. Gold ETF shares are easier to trade through a brokerage, yet carry expenses, spreads and product-specific custody risks.

Physical bullion gives you direct possession of gold; shares in a physically backed gold ETF or trust give you an exchange-traded investment tied to gold under a specific fund structure. Bullion brings premiums, delivery and safekeeping decisions. ETF shares avoid handling the metal but carry fund expenses, trading costs, market-price risk and custody terms you should check in the prospectus. Neither is universally cheaper or more liquid: compare the actual product, transaction and holding period.

What you own: bullion or shares in a fund structure

Physical gold means bars or bullion coins purchased from a bank or reputable dealer. You take possession or arrange for someone else to hold the metal. The World Gold Council, an industry association, describes investment bars with purities from 99.5% to 99.99% and investment coins commonly ranging from 91.67% (22 carat) to 99.99% (24 carat); these are broad descriptions, not guarantees about every item. See its guide to investing in different gold assets.

A “gold ETF” is not one uniform legal arrangement. This comparison concerns physically backed exchange-traded funds or trusts, whose shares trade through a brokerage account. The shares are interests in a security or trust structure, not the same thing as taking home bullion. Custody, allocation and redemption provisions differ, so the prospectus for the exact product matters. The SEC’s ETF investor bulletin explains general trading mechanics; it does not replace a product’s filing.

Compare costs across the whole holding period

The purchase price alone does not reveal which choice costs less. For bullion, include the dealer’s premium and buyback terms, possible transaction fees and delivery, plus any storage and insurance. For an ETF, include annual fund expenses, brokerage costs, the bid-ask spread and the possibility that the market price differs from net asset value (NAV). These costs arise at different points: some are paid up front, some recur while you hold, and some affect the price you receive when you sell.

Cost or consideration Physical bars and bullion coins Physically backed ETF or trust shares
Buying Dealer premium over spot; transaction fees and delivery may also apply. Coins and smaller bars can have higher manufacturing premiums per ounce than larger bars. (World Gold Council: investment guide and retail FAQ.) Annual fund expenses, possible brokerage commission and the bid-ask spread; check the exact prospectus and fund information. (SEC: ETF investor bulletin.)
Holding Storage and insurance may add cost. Self-storage, a rented box and professional vaulting have different provider terms, access and safeguarding trade-offs. (World Gold Council: retail FAQ.) Ongoing fund expenses reduce returns over time. Custody and other trust arrangements depend on the product’s filing.
Selling Resale proceeds depend on the buyer or dealer, product, condition, provenance and buyback terms; the selling price may be below the purchase price. The spread and any brokerage charge affect the sale, and the execution price can differ from NAV. Trading access and market liquidity vary by fund.

How bullion premiums and storage affect the total

The World Gold Council says buyers of investment bars and coins pay a premium over spot and are responsible for delivery, storage and insurance. Its retail guidance says transaction fees, premiums, and possibly storage and insurance can contribute to cost. It also explains that manufacturing costs generally make a coin more expensive per ounce than a small bar, and a smaller bar more expensive per ounce than a larger one. Actual quotes vary by product and seller, so compare the premium and the dealer’s buyback quote for the same item.

Storage is not one fixed charge or arrangement. Keeping bullion yourself avoids a vault bill but makes security, access and insurance your responsibility. A rented box or professional vault brings provider-specific terms and fees. The World Gold Council says professional-vault gold is typically easier to sell, insurance is often included in storage fees, and theft or flood-damage risk is likely reduced. Those are general industry statements, not a guarantee about a particular provider. Before relying on a service, check its ownership records, audits, insurance coverage, access and redemption terms.

ETF expenses are only one part of the bill

An ETF’s expense ratio or stated management fee does not capture all costs of buying and selling shares. The SEC says investors may also pay brokerage commissions and trading costs. The spread is the difference between the ask (the lowest price sellers will accept) and the bid (the highest price buyers will pay). The SEC describes it as a hidden cost because it reduces potential returns. In its illustration—not a current quote—an investor buying 200 shares at a $60 ask and immediately selling at a $59.50 bid would lose $100 before other costs.

For historical context only, the World Gold Council reported that annual management fees for physically backed gold ETFs ranged from 7 to 297 basis points, with many U.S. and European funds below 20 basis points, using data as of September 2020. Those figures are dated and should not be treated as current fee quotes. Check the fund’s current documents and trading information.

Risks and custody are different, not absent

With bullion, you take responsibility for the metal

Direct ownership avoids dependence on a fund’s custody structure, but it puts practical responsibilities on the owner: verify authenticity, keep the metal secure, decide whether to insure it, and preserve records that may help with resale. If a third party stores it, the provider’s terms determine access and safeguarding arrangements.

With an ETF, check the exact trust or fund terms

ETF shares trade at a market price that can be above or below NAV. The SEC says arbitrage by authorized participants is expected to move market prices toward NAV, but a premium or discount can persist, and a trading market may not develop. A fund’s structure also determines how gold is held and what redemption rights, if any, apply to investors.

For a specific example, the abrdn Gold ETF Trust’s 2025 Form 10-K says its objective is to reflect the price of gold bullion less expenses and that shares represent an interest in trust-owned physical gold, except for temporary unallocated gold used to facilitate creation or redemption. The filing identifies risks associated with unallocated gold and the custodian. These terms describe that trust only; do not assume another gold fund has the same arrangement.

Before investing, the SEC recommends reviewing the prospectus, NAV and closing price, premium/discount history, holdings and median bid-ask spread. This helps assess the particular product rather than treating all gold ETFs as interchangeable.

Which is more liquid: physical gold or an ETF?

For many individual investors, ETF shares offer a more direct route to transact: they can generally be bought and sold through a brokerage during exchange trading hours, without arranging transport or a bullion buyer. But “traded on an exchange” does not guarantee a narrow spread or a price exactly equal to NAV. Trading volume, market depth, execution timing and the fund’s premium or discount all matter.

Physical bullion requires a dealer or other buyer, and the resale price depends on the item, its condition and provenance, local demand and the dealer’s terms. Storage arrangements also matter: the World Gold Council says professionally vaulted gold is typically easier to sell than gold held elsewhere. The wider gold market is deep, but that is not the same as instant liquidity for a particular retail coin or ETF. The Council’s 2025 Gold Market Primer estimated average daily gold trading at US$361 billion—about 3,000 tonnes—across the market, not for any one retail product.

A practical way to choose

Use quotes and current documents for the precise amount you plan to invest and the period you expect to hold. Compare costs on the same basis, including both purchase and exit, rather than relying on a headline fee or spot price.

  1. Get a bullion round-trip estimate. Ask a reputable dealer for the purchase price, premium over spot, delivery charge and current buyback price for the same coin or bar. Note any transaction fees.
  2. Price the custody plan. Compare self-storage, a rented box and professional vaulting, including fees, insurance coverage, access and redemption terms.
  3. Identify the exact ETF or trust. Read its prospectus and current fee information for the legal structure, gold custody, allocation, redemption provisions and product-specific risks.
  4. Estimate ETF entry and exit costs. Check brokerage charges, the current bid-ask spread, trading activity and available information on market-price deviations from NAV. Consider that spreads and liquidity can change.
  5. Compare like for like. For your intended holding period and amount, weigh bullion’s premium, custody and resale terms against fund expenses and likely trading costs. Do not assume either route wins without those figures.
  6. Check local tax treatment. Tax depends on your jurisdiction and the exact product; consult current local guidance and the fund’s tax documents where relevant.

When each route may fit

  • Physical bullion may fit if direct possession is the priority and you are willing to handle authenticity, secure storage, insurance and resale logistics.
  • ETF or trust shares may fit if brokerage access and exchange trading are priorities, and you are comfortable with fund expenses, market-price variation and the product’s custody structure.

These are differences in ownership and administration, not a prediction about gold prices. A higher or lower gold price can affect either investment; the choice here is how you want to hold exposure and which costs and responsibilities you accept.
