Physical AI: Why the Next Big Frontier Is Giving Software Agents Hands

Physical AI links AI models to machines that can sense and act. The frontier is not just better models: it also depends on robot bodies, sensors, control, computing and evidence from real-world use.

Physical AI connects AI models to machines that can sense and act in the real world. The model may interpret an instruction or scene, but useful action also depends on sensors, a robot body, control software, computing and training. Giving software agents “hands” is therefore not just a matter of attaching a gripper: it means engineering a system that can perceive, decide and move safely in changing physical surroundings.

What is physical AI?

Physical AI is AI connected to a robot or another machine so it can interpret its surroundings and take actions there. A text-generating model that only returns an answer is not, by itself, a physical agent. The system must receive information from the world and translate its decisions into machine behavior.

Google DeepMind calls the ability to understand and react to the world while acting “embodied” reasoning. In its Gemini Robotics announcement, the company described embodied reasoning as a requirement for AI that acts in the physical world. That is the company’s framing of its research, not an independent finding that its systems behave like people.

Why does giving an AI “hands” take more than a model?

A robot’s behavior emerges from several connected parts. A strong language or vision model cannot compensate for a sensor that misses an object, a gripper that cannot hold it, or control software that moves the robot inaccurately. The engineering challenge is to make the whole chain work together.

Part of the system What it does Why it matters
AI model Interprets instructions and sensory input, then helps choose what to do. It must connect a request to relevant objects, context and actions rather than merely produce plausible language.
Sensors Provide information about the robot’s surroundings and state. Actions depend on what the system can detect; the world may change while it is acting.
Robot body and end effector Provide the means to move and interact, such as arms, hands or grippers. Different bodies and tools allow different movements and tasks. A model’s behavior is shaped by the robot it is connected to.
Control software Turns higher-level decisions into machine movements. Physical actions need to be coordinated and responsive, not just described correctly.
Computing and development tools Run models and support development, simulation and deployment. Developers need infrastructure for building and testing systems, from cloud resources to computing near the robot.
Training and evaluation Help develop behavior and assess how it performs. A successful demonstration does not establish that a system will handle new tasks, conditions or failures reliably.

These pieces also create practical trade-offs. A model that depends on remote computing has different deployment needs from one designed to run on the robot. A more capable model still has to fit the machine, task and available computing resources.

What has changed in robotics models?

AI developers are working toward models that can handle a wider range of instructions, robot embodiments and movements. Google DeepMind identifies generality, interactivity and dexterity as desired qualities for useful robotic systems: handling varied tasks, responding as circumstances change, and manipulating objects with control.

In an announcement dated July 30, 2026, Google DeepMind said Gemini Robotics 2 extends its work from upper-body tabletop tasks toward whole-body motion. The company described Gemini Robotics ER 2 as a high-level reasoning model that processes instructions and communicates with people, and said the system supports different end effectors, including hands and grippers. These are vendor descriptions of the company’s systems; they do not demonstrate arbitrary human-level ability or prove that robots can generalize to every task.

Robot embodiment remains important. Google DeepMind has discussed adapting or specializing models for different robot bodies, including the humanoid Apollo. This points to a goal of making models useful across more than one configuration, not proof that a single model can control any robot out of the box. A different arm, hand or gripper can change which actions are possible and how they must be controlled.

Where do simulation and computing fit?

Building physical AI involves more than training a model. NVIDIA describes a robotics development stack that includes models, simulation frameworks, accelerated libraries and computing spanning cloud to edge. Its platform materials also say Isaac ROS is built on ROS 2. These are examples of infrastructure developers can use; they are not an independent assessment of how well a particular robot performs.

Simulation can provide a place to develop and test behavior before or alongside work with real machines. But a result in simulation is not proof of safe or reliable behavior in the physical world. Real robots encounter contact, changing surroundings and hardware limits that have to be addressed in deployment and evaluation.

Running AI locally is another development path. In a June 24, 2025 post, Google DeepMind described Gemini Robotics On-Device as a robotics foundation model for bi-arm robots designed to require minimal computational resources. That announcement indicates an effort toward on-device inference; it does not provide a quantitative benchmark for power use, latency, reliability or cost.

Can one AI model control different robots?

Researchers are pursuing models that can adapt to multiple robot embodiments, and developers may specialize a model for a particular body or tool. But “different robots” does not mean every robot. The available descriptions do not establish plug-and-play control of arbitrary machines.

When assessing a claim that a model works across robots, look for the embodiments and end effectors actually used, the tasks demonstrated, and whether the system responds to changed instructions or surroundings. Also distinguish a vendor demonstration from an independent evaluation. The sources described here do not provide a common benchmark that makes different named systems directly comparable.

Are physical AI systems ready for homes and workplaces?

The cited announcements show active development and company-described capabilities. They do not establish how many robots are routinely deployed in homes or workplaces, or provide comparable field-reliability data across systems. A demonstrated task is evidence that a system performed that task under its demonstration conditions; it is not evidence of broad, dependable general-purpose use.

For a real deployment, the relevant questions include whether the robot can complete the intended task consistently, recover when something changes, work safely around people, and operate with the available hardware and computing. The sources do not answer those questions with a shared set of independent results, so broad claims about readiness should be treated cautiously.

How can beginners explore physical AI?

An educational robotics kit is a modest way to learn about robotics and programming. NVIDIA’s robotics coverage identifies ROBOTIS as a developer of educational robotic kits, as well as servos, actuators, manipulators and open-source humanoid platforms. A learning kit can introduce the relationship between software, sensors and movement, but it is not a way to reproduce frontier humanoid research systems.
