Photonic computing uses light for selected processing tasks, while photonic interconnects use light to move data between electronic components. Current products show the technology developing for AI infrastructure, not a general-purpose computer that operates without electricity.
What does “photonic computing” mean?
Photonic computing is an umbrella term for using light in computing-related tasks. It covers distinct roles: an optical link can carry information as light, while a photonic compute engine uses optical components to perform selected operations. Those are not the same thing as replacing every electronic chip or electrical signal in a computer.
In conventional computers, electronic chips and electrical signaling remain central. Optical and electronic components can work together, with interfaces converting signals between photons and electronics. That distinction matters: a system can use light to move data without doing its general-purpose computation optically.
Where light is showing up now: moving data in AI systems
The clearest commercial example in the current product material is Lightmatter’s Passage, a photonic interconnect platform aimed at AI infrastructure. What these products do—and do not—show
They show active development of optical links
Lightmatter’s pages describe links designed to move data in AI infrastructure, including on-board and near-package optical applications. The company says Passage is available to early-access partners. That is a sign of product development, but early access is not the same as widespread deployment.

They do not show consumer computers abandoning electricity
The cited hardware is specialized interconnect technology for AI systems. The available product descriptions do not establish a general-purpose consumer computer that runs without electricity, nor do they show that all logic, memory, control, or data processing has shifted to light. Optical communication can be part of an electronic system without making the whole system an optical computer.
How to judge claims about optical computers
When evaluating a photonics claim, first identify what the optical component actually does. Then check where it sits in the system and whether a published figure comes from a vendor specification or an independent, comparable test.

- Task: Is the device moving data, performing a defined computation, or doing both?
- Placement: Is it on-board, near-package, or co-packaged with other components?
- Metric: Does the claim give bandwidth, energy per bit, or another measure—and under what conditions?
- Interfaces: What electrical-to-optical or optical-to-electrical conversion is needed?
- Status: Is the product a specification, a reference platform, early access, or a broadly deployed system?
These questions help separate a genuine optical link or specialized compute component from the much broader claim that “electricity inside computers” is being replaced. The current product figures above are not a like-for-like independent comparison across competing products.

Light-based processing and communication are real areas of development, but the phrase “replacing electricity” overstates what the available examples establish. The strongest current commercial example here is an optical interconnect working alongside electronic chips. Claims in that article comparing historical improvements in raw computing performance with improvements in data movement are not included here: its attribution to IBM researchers does not identify an underlying publication that can verify the figures.
