Start with an overview, then photograph the details
Begin with an image that shows the device’s overall shape, orientation, and the position of its main components. Flexible electronics can bend or fold, so an overview helps readers understand where a close-up feature sits in the larger device. Then make separate detail images of the traces, contacts, or other features that are too small to read clearly in the overview.

Choose close-up optics for the feature and working distance
For camera-based close-ups, a macro lens is a straightforward category to consider. Choose one that fits your camera mount and lets you work at a practical distance from the sample; the necessary magnification depends on the size of the feature you need to show. The University of Eastern Finland’s Center for Photonics Sciences lists macro and spectral imaging equipment, including specialty macro objectives and a motorized Leica Z6 APO zoom macroscope, while Sigma Connectivity describes a precision close-up lab for macro photography (University of Eastern Finland Center for Photonics Sciences; Sigma Connectivity).

For inspection rather than conventional camera photography, a camera-equipped inspection microscope can provide stable magnified viewing. Stanford Nano Shared Facilities describes such a microscope with ring illumination and scalable grids for dimensioning (Stanford Nano Shared Facilities). The suitable choice depends on the feature size, required working distance, depth of field, and how steadily the camera or sample can be held.
Control light and repeatability
Reflective contacts or traces can show distracting glare. Inspect the preview and adjust the light or sample position until the detail is visible; repeatable lighting matters especially when you are comparing samples or before-and-after images. Sigma Connectivity describes controlled lighting setups, standardized reflective and transmissive targets, and a light booth for reproducing standard illuminants (Sigma Connectivity). These are examples of controlled imaging practice, not requirements for ordinary documentation.

More specialized work may require broader imaging capabilities. EduceLab FLEX at the University of Kentucky describes high-resolution documentation and comparative imaging, including two 45.7 MP Nikon Z7 II cameras—one visible-light and one full-spectrum—and 16-band LED lighting panels spanning UV to near-infrared (EduceLab FLEX). That facility inventory illustrates a research setup; it is not a minimum equipment list for photographing a device.

There is no validated, flexible-electronics-specific recipe here for exposure, aperture, lighting angle, or sample support. Those decisions vary with dimensions, curvature, surface reflectance, and whether the goal is publication documentation, visual inspection, or multispectral analysis. Make a test frame and adjust based on whether the required feature is clear and free of distracting glare.

Include a scale when dimensions matter
If readers need to judge size, include a scale reference in the image or add a clearly calibrated scale bar to the figure. A published flexible-electronics figure provides examples with a 1 cm scale bar for an optical photograph and a 5 mm scale bar for an image profile (flexible-electronics book figure). These examples show ways to communicate scale; they do not mean every image needs a physical ruler in the frame.
A photographic scale ruler or calibration target can help when you need to document dimensions, but choose a method that remains legible and does not obscure the device. If you add a scale bar during figure preparation, ensure it corresponds to the image’s actual scale.

What photographs can—and cannot—establish
Photos can document appearance, layout, visible defects, and changes in form. They do not by themselves establish electrical performance or microscopic material properties. The University of Eastern Finland facility describes imaging alongside separate microscopy and electrical testing capabilities, illustrating that visual documentation and technical characterization answer different questions (University of Eastern Finland Center for Photonics Sciences).
For useful documentation, capture the whole device and the relevant details, record scale where needed, and keep the setup consistent for comparisons. Use suitable measurement or characterization methods when the claim concerns electrical behavior or properties beyond what the image can resolve.
