Photogrammetry Laptops: How to Choose the Right Hardware

Agisoft’s recommendations point to RAM, a supported discrete GPU and a multicore CPU as key photogrammetry laptop considerations. Learn how to match them to project size and software version.

For photogrammetry, prioritize enough RAM for the size of your projects, then choose a supported discrete GPU and a fast multicore CPU. Agisoft’s guidance gives a useful starting point, but it does not identify a tested winner among current laptops: actual performance depends on the machine, software version, project settings and sustained cooling.

What laptop specifications matter most for photogrammetry?

Photogrammetry workloads combine image matching, depth-map generation and reconstruction. The hardware bottleneck can vary by processing step, so a single specification does not determine whether a laptop will handle a project well.

RAM sets a practical limit on project size

Agisoft’s current Metashape system requirements describe a basic configuration with 16–32 GB of RAM. The Metashape Professional Edition 2.2 manual recommends 32 GB. The manual explains that the number of photos Metashape can process depends on available RAM and the reconstruction parameters used, so photo count alone is not a reliable capacity estimate.

A discrete GPU helps, but its role varies by task

Agisoft’s current basic guidance lists an NVIDIA or AMD GPU with at least 1024 unified shaders, with a GeForce RTX 2060 and Radeon RX 5600M given as examples. The Professional 2.2 manual recommends a discrete NVIDIA or AMD GPU with at least 4 GB of VRAM. Treat these as vendor guidance, not proof that all GPUs meeting a threshold perform alike.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

CPU speed and core count still count

The current basic configuration lists a 4–12-core Intel, AMD or Apple M1/M2 CPU at 2.0 GHz or higher. For complex geometry reconstruction, Agisoft also recommends a high-speed multicore CPU; its Professional 2.2 manual gives Intel Core i7 and AMD Ryzen 7 as examples. Those are recommendations, not comparative tests of current mobile processors.

How do Agisoft’s basic and advanced configurations differ?

Agisoft’s current requirements page distinguishes a basic setup for laptop or desktop use from an advanced setup identified for desktop or workstation use. These figures are software-vendor configurations, not laptop performance benchmarks.

Which laptop configuration should you look for?

For smaller projects or occasional processing

Start with the basic configuration as a reference point, and favor the upper end of its RAM range if your projects are likely to grow. Confirm that the exact laptop GPU meets the software’s requirements and that its memory is dedicated VRAM where specified. Agisoft’s basic page names examples, but those examples do not substitute for checking the GPU in the particular laptop.

For larger datasets and demanding settings

More RAM can support larger projects, while a discrete GPU and fast multicore CPU address other parts of the workload. The Metashape Professional 2.2 manual’s 32 GB RAM and 4+ GB discrete-GPU recommendation is a more specific reference for that edition and version. For projects regularly pushing beyond a laptop’s memory or cooling capacity, consider whether a desktop or workstation better fits the workload rather than assuming a high-end laptop will match it.

Agisoft Technical Support offered separate, dated forum guidance of 6–12 cores, the highest possible CPU frequency, one or two GPUs with 4 GB VRAM and at least 1400–1800 CUDA cores (or AMD shader processing units), and 32–64 GB RAM. The post is general system guidance, not a laptop-specific recommendation or a current cross-vendor benchmark. See the Agisoft Technical Support forum post.

  • Memory: Check installed RAM, maximum supported capacity and whether memory is upgradeable. Unified memory and conventional system RAM are not interchangeable labels.
  • GPU: Verify the precise GPU model, VRAM and software support. Do not compare GPU-core counts across architectures as though they were equivalent.
  • CPU: Check the exact processor and consider sustained performance, not only its core count or advertised boost frequency.
  • Cooling: Photogrammetry can run processing steps for extended periods. Look for credible testing of sustained loads for the exact laptop configuration; the cited requirements do not establish thermal performance.
  • Storage: Allow room for source images, project files and generated outputs. The cited recommendations do not specify a storage capacity.
  • Portability and power: Consider weight and battery behavior alongside processing needs. The sources do not compare laptop battery life.
  • Total cost: Compare the price of the exact RAM and GPU configuration you need. The cited sources do not establish current prices or value rankings.

Does a MacBook Pro suit this workload?

Apple’s 2026 technical specifications for the 16-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro or M5 Max list GPU configurations with 20, 32 or 40 cores and up to 128 GB of unified memory. These specifications do not establish how those configurations compare with the NVIDIA or AMD discrete GPUs named in Agisoft’s recommendations, nor do they show a cross-platform performance winner. Check compatibility and performance for the exact Metashape version and workload you plan to use.

Check the Metashape version before buying

Agisoft’s installer page listed Metashape 2.3.2 as its latest released version when accessed for this article. The detailed Professional hardware recommendation above comes from the 2.2 manual, while the general configuration comes from the current requirements page. Consult the current documentation for the edition and version you intend to run before making a purchase.

The Standard Edition 2.3 manual describes GPU acceleration for image matching, depth-map generation, model and DEM generation based on depth maps, texture blending and model refinement. It also advises users of dedicated GPUs to disable integrated GPUs and the CPU for optimal performance. This is version-specific Metashape guidance, not a general rule for every photogrammetry app or operating system. See the Metashape Standard Edition 2.3 manual and Agisoft’s installer page.
