Photogrammetry in Dentistry: Digital Impressions for Implant Workflows

Photogrammetry is a distinct digital method for recording implant positions, especially relevant to complete-arch workflows. Evidence is mixed, and case, protocol and system compatibility matter.

Dental photogrammetry is a digital method for recording implant positions, with a particularly relevant use case in complete-arch implant-supported prosthesis workflows. It is not the same as an intraoral scanner (IOS), and neither digital method is interchangeable with every conventional impression technique. Evidence does not establish a universal winner: results vary with the method, protocol and clinical situation.

Why does recording implant positions matter?

An implant-supported prosthesis depends on an accurate record of where the implants are in relation to one another. That record is used downstream in the clinical-to-laboratory workflow for designing and fabricating the prosthesis. If the recorded positions do not represent the clinical situation adequately, the digital or physical impression cannot by itself guarantee a usable result or a well-fitting prosthesis.

This matters especially in a complete arch, where implants may be separated by long distances. The question is not simply whether an impression is digital, but whether the chosen capture method and protocol suit the case and produce a record the laboratory can use.

What is photogrammetry in dentistry?

Photogrammetry, also called stereophotogrammetry (SPG), is a digital technique evaluated for recording implant positions in implant-supported prosthesis workflows. In this context, it is one way to capture the spatial relationship among implants, rather than a synonym for all digital implant impressions.

The available evidence does not establish one equipment-agnostic capture sequence that can be treated as a universal clinical protocol. Capture procedures and compatible components should therefore be determined within the selected system’s validated workflow, rather than inferred from a general description of photogrammetry.

How is dental photogrammetry different from intraoral scanning?

An IOS and a photogrammetry system are distinct digital methods. Comparing them does not mean that a result for one scanner, photogrammetry system or protocol applies to all devices in that category. Conventional implant impressions are a third option: they create a physical impression record and are not simply another kind of digital scan.

Method What it records Evidence and considerations for implant cases
Photogrammetry / stereophotogrammetry (SPG) A digital record of implant positions for implant-supported prosthesis workflows. Evaluated particularly for full-arch cases. The available sources do not establish a universal capture protocol or a settled clinical winner over IOS.
Intraoral scanner (IOS) A digital impression captured with an intraoral scanning device. ITI notes that accuracy varies among scanners and is affected by inter-implant distance and scanning protocol. Its recommendations distinguish some settings from large-span and edentulous cases.
Conventional implant impression A physical impression record used as a comparator with digital methods. Included in the full-arch evidence review, but results do not show that all conventional methods perform alike or that they are always more or less accurate than digital methods.

These methods should be compared for the actual clinical situation, not under a blanket digital-versus-conventional label. The relevant evidence setting also matters: the prominent 2024 review discussed below included in-vitro studies, not a general demonstration of clinical outcomes.

Is photogrammetry more accurate than an intraoral scanner for full-arch implants?

The evidence cited here does not justify a universal claim that photogrammetry is more accurate than IOS for every complete-arch case. A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis explicitly compared IOS with SPG for complete-arch implant impressions, but its indexed abstract does not provide pooled numerical results or enough subgroup detail to establish a settled winner. A 2026 literature review describes intraoral photogrammetry as promising while noting that further studies are needed; that is a research direction, not proof of clinical superiority.

What the 2024 full-arch review found

Joensahakij, Serichetaphongse and Chengprapakorn’s systematic review, published on 12 August 2024, assessed 23 in-vitro studies published from January 2000 through January 2024. Twelve studies reported greater accuracy with digital techniques, six favored conventional techniques, and five reported comparable accuracy. These are counts of studies, not a pooled effect size or a measure of how much more accurate one method was. The authors emphasized limitations and the need for standardized research methods and outcomes.

The mixed results are a reason to avoid extrapolating from a single device, protocol or laboratory setup to every implant system and clinical case. In-vitro accuracy findings can inform method selection, but they do not alone establish fit, efficiency or patient outcomes in practice.

Can an intraoral scanner replace a conventional impression for a full-arch implant case?

ITI consensus recommendations are more cautious than a broad claim that digital impressions can replace conventional impressions in all implant cases. The consensus reports that IOS accuracy is comparable to conventional impressions in laboratory conditions for some settings. It also notes that increased inter-implant distance can reduce accuracy, that scanning protocol matters in edentulous jaws, and that accuracy varies across IOS devices.

On that basis, ITI supports digital impressions for single implant restorations, advises following device-specific scanning protocols, and does not recommend routine digital impressions for large inter-implant spans or edentulous jaws. Laboratory comparability in some settings should not be read as a general endorsement of routine IOS use for every complete-arch case.

What scan body do I need for my implant system?

A scan body is a physical component used as part of a digital implant impression workflow. It is not a universal accessory: the appropriate component depends on the implant connection and compatibility with the validated clinical and laboratory workflow. A generic product description or a match based only on appearance is not enough to establish compatibility.

  • Confirm the implant system and connection involved in the case.
  • Check that the scan body is specified as compatible with that system and with the intended digital workflow.
  • Confirm the component and record requirements with the laboratory receiving the implant-position data.

The evidence reviewed here does not establish a device-by-device compatibility matrix or endorse a particular scan body model. Selection should be made against the specific implant system and workflow, not from a generic recommendation.

How should a clinical team choose a capture workflow?

A practical decision should begin with the case and the handoff requirements, rather than with the assumption that one digital technique is automatically preferable. The evidence supports a case-specific discussion among the clinician, implant team and laboratory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Define the clinical situation. Distinguish a single implant or short span from a large inter-implant span or an edentulous complete arch.
  2. Select the capture method for that situation. Consider SPG, IOS or a conventional impression in light of the evidence and the limits of the selected system.
  3. Follow the method-specific protocol. For IOS in particular, ITI identifies scanning protocol and scanner choice as accuracy considerations; use the device-specific protocol rather than assuming results transfer between scanners.
  4. Verify component compatibility. Ensure the scan body, implant connection and intended laboratory workflow are compatible where digital implant data are being captured.
  5. Agree on the laboratory handoff. Establish what implant-position record the laboratory needs for the planned prosthesis. Capturing data digitally does not, by itself, guarantee fit, speed, lower cost or a better patient outcome.

What the evidence does—and does not—settle

Current evidence supports treating photogrammetry, IOS and conventional impressions as distinct options whose performance depends on method and protocol. The 2024 full-arch review found mixed in-vitro results, while ITI’s recommendations set clearer boundaries for IOS use and caution against routine digital impressions in large-span and edentulous cases. Neither finding establishes that one approach is best for every complete-arch workflow.

The exact pooled results and subgroup conclusions of the 2025 IOS-versus-SPG meta-analysis are not available in its indexed abstract. The evidence described here also does not provide a product comparison, a universal clinical protocol or a system compatibility matrix. A defensible choice therefore rests on the individual case, validated system protocol, component compatibility and the clinical-to-laboratory workflow.
