That is the share of the reported product distribution attributed to ethylene—not evidence that 99.1% of the input carbon dioxide was converted. The result is a laboratory demonstration, not a commercial production process.
What the study achieved
Tang and colleagues report photocatalytic conversion of carbon dioxide (CO₂) and water into ethylene using a low-coordination manganese single-atom catalyst embedded in zinc sulfide with sulfur vacancies, written Mn₁–ZnSᵥ. The paper reports an ethylene formation rate of 76.6 μmol per gram of catalyst per hour and 99.1% ethylene selectivity. These figures describe the authors’ laboratory experiments, not an industrial output rate or the fraction of all supplied CO₂ converted. Read the study in Nature Communications.

The experiments used visible light with wavelengths of at least 380 nm, and the authors report using neither a photosensitizer nor a sacrificial agent. A figure caption specifies that the comparison experiments ran at 298 K for four hours, with 5 mL of water and 0.2 g of catalyst. The reported apparent quantum efficiency was 8.1% at 420 nm. Isotope-labeling tests using ¹³CO₂ and D₂O supported the authors’ conclusion that CO₂ supplied the carbon and water supplied the protons.

Selectivity describes which products a reaction favors, rather than how much of the starting material reacts. Here, 99.1% refers to ethylene’s share of the reported product distribution. It does not mean that 99.1% of the input CO₂ became ethylene. The headline figure should therefore be read alongside the formation rate and the experiment’s specific conditions.

For context, the authors report CO formation at 4.2 μmol g⁻¹ h⁻¹ for the best-performing catalyst and say that they detected no liquid products. These are reported product results for the study’s apparatus and conditions; they do not establish a complete carbon balance or a commercial-scale yield.
Why the catalyst’s structure matters
The catalyst combines isolated manganese atoms with zinc sulfide containing sulfur vacancies. The authors describe using microwave irradiation-induced targeted defect engineering to create low-coordination manganese sites. In their proposed mechanism, sulfur vacancies leave manganese in coordination-unsaturated Mn–S₂ configurations, producing an asymmetric local environment.

In-situ spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations support the authors’ explanation: this environment changes local charge distribution, strengthens adsorption of *CO, and promotes coupling between *CO and *CHO to form *COCHO, an intermediate on the proposed route to ethylene’s carbon–carbon bond. This is the study’s mechanistic interpretation, not a demonstration that the catalyst is ready for practical manufacturing.
How the catalyst variants compared
The study’s internal comparison indicates that both sulfur vacancies and manganese coordination were important to the reported performance.
| Material | Ethylene selectivity | Ethylene formation rate | Reported comparison |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pristine ZnS | 5.6% | Not stated | Primarily produced CO |
| ZnS with sulfur vacancies, without Mn | 7.3% | Not stated | Vacancies alone produced only a modest reported ethylene selectivity |
| Saturated-coordination Mn₁–ZnS | 74.5% | 47.5 μmol g⁻¹ h⁻¹ | Mn was present, but its coordination was saturated |
| Low-coordination Mn₁–ZnSᵥ | 99.1% | 76.6 μmol g⁻¹ h⁻¹ | The low-coordination, sulfur-vacancy catalyst |
“Not stated” means the study figures summarized here do not provide a rate for that variant. These comparisons are useful for understanding the catalyst design, but they are not directly comparable to output figures from commercial ethylene plants, which would require aligned conditions and system boundaries.
What the 200-hour stability result establishes
The authors report 50 consecutive cycles totaling 200 hours without significant decline in activity or selectivity, with post-reaction characterization also reported. This supports cycling stability under the study’s laboratory conditions. It does not establish continuous industrial operating life, performance at larger scale, or maintenance requirements.

What remains unknown
The study demonstrates a promising way to direct photocatalytic CO₂ reduction toward a valuable molecule, but its reported selectivity and rate alone do not show whether the process can compete with conventional ethylene production or reduce emissions over its full lifecycle. The paper does not establish commercial availability, manufacturing economics, scale-up performance, or net climate benefit. Those questions depend on factors such as reactor scale, energy and material inputs, durability in practical operation, and lifecycle emissions.

This result is specifically about converting CO₂ and water to ethylene. It should not be confused with separate research on photocatalytic conversion of acetylene into ethylene: the feedstocks and reactions differ.
