The best cable-free file transfer depends on your devices: use Quick Share for a compatible Android phone and Windows PC, AirDrop for an iPhone and Mac, or cloud storage when a direct nearby option is unavailable. For Android and Windows, Phone Link is another route if it is paired and meets the file-sharing requirements.
Choose the method that fits your devices

There is no established universal speed winner among these options. Pick based on compatibility, proximity, network conditions, accounts, and whether you need a one-time copy or continued cloud access.

Android to Windows with Quick Share
Google’s Quick Share guidance lists Android 6.0 or later and a 64-bit Windows 10-or-later computer as general requirements. ARM-based computers require Windows 11 or later. The devices need Bluetooth and Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and availability varies by location. If installation or discovery fails, check Google’s current compatibility information.
- Install or open Quick Share on the Windows computer.
- Turn on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on both devices, and keep them nearby.
- On Android, select the files, tap Share, then choose Quick Share.
- Select the Windows computer from the devices shown.
- Accept the incoming request on the computer and wait for the transfer to finish.
The recipient must be discoverable for the phone to find it. Menu names and visibility controls can vary by software version.

If the Windows computer does not appear
- Confirm Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are on, check the computer’s Quick Share visibility, and verify the Quick Share app is installed.
- Connect both devices to the same network when possible and bring them close together. Google recommends trying a distance of about 30 cm when discovery is unreliable.
- If the network blocks device-to-device sharing, Google suggests turning off Wi-Fi on the phone, enabling its hotspot, and connecting the computer to that hotspot. This is a troubleshooting option for restrictive networks, not a requirement for every transfer. See Google’s Quick Share troubleshooting guidance.
Android to Windows with Phone Link
Phone Link can share files between an Android phone and Windows PC. Microsoft’s file-sharing instructions specify Android 10 or later and minimum versions of the Link to Windows and Phone Link apps for this feature. Requirements can differ by feature, so check Microsoft’s current requirements rather than assuming one setup supports everything.
For setup, Microsoft’s Phone Link requirements page describes pairing the phone and PC, typically with a QR code and the same Microsoft account; its general guidance also calls for both devices to be on the same Wi-Fi network.

- On Android, select a locally saved file and tap Share.
- Choose “Link to Windows – Send to PC,” then select the connected computer.
- Watch for the transfer notification on the PC. The default destination is
DownloadsPhone Link; Microsoft says the folder can be changed in Phone Link settings.
Phone Link shares cloud-stored content as a link rather than transferring the file itself. For a local copy, download the file from its cloud service first, then share it. Microsoft’s separate cross-device clipboard feature is not a substitute for transferring a full-resolution image: images over 1 MB are resized when copied through that feature.

AirDrop sends items from an iPhone to a nearby Mac. Turn on AirDrop on the receiving Mac, select the item on the iPhone, open the share flow, and choose the Mac. Accept the item on the Mac if prompted. Apple’s AirDrop guide covers sending items to nearby Apple devices; exact controls and discoverability options can vary by operating-system version.

Use cloud storage when a direct transfer will not work
Upload the file from the phone to a cloud account, then open that account on the computer to access or download it. This is an upload followed by a separate access or download, not a direct local transfer. It requires an internet connection and account, and may use mobile data or cloud storage. Google’s Android file-transfer guidance describes using a Google Account to access files across a phone and computer and directs photos and videos to Google Photos.

Phone Link sends a link instead of a file
This is expected when the selected content is stored in the cloud. Download it to the phone first if you need to send an actual local file.

Phone Link transfer does not complete
Confirm the phone and PC are paired and the relevant apps meet Microsoft’s requirements. Keep the transfer page open until it completes, then check DownloadsPhone Link on Windows or the folder configured in Phone Link settings.

Not sure which route to use?
- For a nearby Android-to-Windows transfer, start with Quick Share if both devices meet its requirements.
- If Android and Windows are already paired through Phone Link, use it for locally saved files.
- For iPhone and Mac, use AirDrop.
- For unsupported device combinations or continued access from multiple devices, use a cloud account.
