They are not mutually exclusive: Termux can also run an SSH client. The key question is where you want your commands to run.
What is the difference between phone SSH and a mobile Linux terminal?
An SSH app is a connection tool and terminal interface. It connects over a network to a remote host, then sends your commands to a shell running on that host. The host—not the phone—provides the operating system, files, installed software and computing resources.

A mobile Linux terminal provides a local shell environment on the phone. Termux, for example, describes itself as an Android terminal emulator and Linux environment. It installs a minimal base system and offers additional packages through its package manager. That makes it useful for running command-line tools on Android, but it is not the same as replacing Android with a full desktop Linux installation.

The two workflows can overlap. Termux can run the OpenSSH client, so you can use it for local commands and connect to a remote machine from the same app. A dedicated SSH app, by contrast, does not by itself provide Termux’s on-device package environment.

Which should you use for your task?

The cited Termux project documentation describes Android support, while Mobile SSH documents Android and iOS support. Do not assume Termux is available for iPhone or iPad on that basis; an iOS SSH client can still connect to a remote server.
What can you do with SSH on a phone?
A phone SSH client can open an interactive terminal session on a reachable remote host. You typically provide the host name or IP address, port, user name and a password or private key. The commands and software available after login depend on the remote machine, not on which SSH app you use.

Common uses include managing a server, working on a development host or accessing a home computer or network device. The phone needs network access to the host, and you need valid login credentials. The SSH client’s job is to provide the connection and a workable terminal interface; it does not install the remote machine’s tools on the phone.
Phone-oriented SSH apps may provide extra terminal keys, session panes, scroll handling and external-keyboard support. These controls can make command entry easier on a touchscreen, but the available features vary by app.

What can a mobile Linux terminal do locally?
On Android, Termux provides a shell and an environment for command-line programs without requiring root access or a separate setup process, according to its project documentation. Its package manager can install additional software. The project names shells such as Bash, fish and Zsh, text editors, programming languages, compilers and debugging tools among the kinds of software it supports.
Local use means you can work with tools installed in Termux without first connecting to a server. Package availability and compatibility are limited by Termux’s Android environment: do not assume that every desktop Linux application, system service or privileged operation will work there. Termux is an Android app environment, not a replacement operating system.

Termux can also install and run the OpenSSH client. When you use that client to connect to a server, the remote commands still execute on the server; having Termux on the phone does not make the remote shell local.
What do you need to get started?
For an SSH connection
- A remote host that is running an SSH service and is reachable from the phone’s network.
- The host name or IP address, port and user name required by that host.
- A valid password or private key for the account.
- An SSH client. On iPhone or iPad, choose an iOS SSH client; Termux is documented for Android.
For local command-line work on Android
- A mobile terminal environment such as Termux.
- The packages and tools you need, installed through the environment’s package manager where available.
- No remote server for commands that run locally in the terminal environment.
An external or Bluetooth keyboard is optional for either workflow. Termux documents keyboard shortcuts and mouse support in an external-display setup, and Mobile SSH documents external and Bluetooth keyboard input on Android and iOS. A keyboard can make extended typing more comfortable, but it is not required to open a local shell or establish an SSH connection.

Which workflow fits the way you want to work?
- Choose an SSH client when the files, tools or compute you need are on another machine and you want to administer or use it remotely.
- Choose a local Android terminal when you want to install supported command-line packages and run commands on the phone without connecting to a server.
- Use both when you need local Android tools as well as access to remote machines. Termux can cover both roles on Android, while separate apps are another option.
