Don’t poke, scrape, brush into the holes, use suction or compressed air, or direct liquid at the grille. If the sound became muffled after the phone got wet, follow the manufacturer’s model-specific drying advice instead of treating it as a dirt problem.
How to clean a phone speaker grille safely
- Power down and unplug. Turn off the phone and disconnect cables and accessories before cleaning. Follow your device maker’s current instructions. Apple and Samsung both advise powering down; Google also provides model-specific cleaning guidance. Apple’s iPhone cleaning guidance, Samsung’s Galaxy cleaning guidance, and Google Pixel cleaning guidance cover their respective devices.
- Remove the case and inspect the opening. Under good light, check whether the case partly covers the grille or whether dust is visible on the exterior. Removing the case is a practical inspection step, not a universal manufacturer requirement.
- Wipe only the exterior. Use a clean, soft, lint-free cloth with a light touch. Samsung specifically names microfiber or camera-lens cloths for gentle surface wiping. Keep the cloth and its fibers outside the holes; surface-cleaning advice does not establish that a cloth can clear compacted debris inside a grille.
- Stop if wiping does not help. Don’t push a pin, toothpick, cotton swab, paper, brush bristle, or other object into the grille. Avoid spraying liquid or cleaner toward it, compressed air, suction, heat, and abrasive tools. Apple, Samsung, and Google caution against methods such as cleaning products or compressed air; Apple’s wet-iPhone guidance also warns against inserting foreign objects into the charging connector while drying.
Is the muffling from dust or moisture?
The timing can help distinguish two common situations, but it cannot diagnose internal damage. Visible dust on the outside points to a surface-cleaning attempt; sound that changed after getting wet calls for the manufacturer’s drying instructions.

|---|---|---|---|
| Dry, visible dust on the exterior | Surface debris or a case obstructing the opening | Remove the case and gently wipe the exterior with a soft, lint-free cloth | If sound remains muffled or debris appears packed inside, contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider |
| Muffled sound after liquid exposure | Moisture affecting the speaker, receiver, or microphone | Use the exact drying guidance for the phone model; do not probe or heat the opening | If sound stays impaired or liquid damage is possible, seek manufacturer or authorized service |
What to do if the phone got wet
Moisture is not the same problem as exterior dust. Apple says, “Water in the port may degrade speaker or microphone performance until it completely evaporates.” For a wet iPhone with muffled sound, Apple’s specific instruction is to place the iPhone speaker-side down on a lint-free cloth and see whether water drips out. Its broader instructions say to leave the phone in a dry area with airflow, avoid external heat, and keep foreign objects out of the connector. See Apple’s instructions on water resistance and wet iPhone speakers.

Its guidance for dirty-liquid exposure applies only to water-resistant Galaxy phones, and it recommends service-center inspection after water exposure. Samsung also says: “Do not use chemical cleaners, abrasive materials, compressed air or external heat sources to clean your device.” Do not rinse a phone unless current instructions for that exact model explicitly say to do so. Do not assume a water-resistance rating makes liquid cleaning safe. Ratings and instructions depend on model, and Apple says splash, water, and dust resistance can decrease with normal wear. Identify the phone model and check its current manufacturer guidance before taking any action involving moisture.
When to stop troubleshooting
- Sound remains muffled after a gentle exterior wipe or the appropriate model-specific drying steps.
- Debris appears packed into the grille and would require an implement or force to remove.
- The phone had liquid exposure and damage is possible.
In these cases, stop experimenting and contact the phone maker or an authorized service provider. Manufacturer guidance supports service inspection for possible liquid damage, but it does not establish a universal waiting period or a way to diagnose internal failure at home.
