Those are category-level tendencies, not guarantees: the app, camera model, recording method, and service terms determine what each setup can actually do.

A spare phone can work for a short-term view of a room, pet, or other temporary situation if its camera, Wi-Fi, app, and power setup are reliable. Test live viewing and recording before relying on it.

Long-term use
For a camera that will remain in service, favor a dedicated model after checking its recording retention, software support, and power arrangements. Outdoor placement or complete darkness
Choose a camera explicitly rated for the intended location and with the night-vision method you need. A bare phone is not an equivalent weather-rated camera.

Weak Wi-Fi, internet loss, or power outages
Check separately for cellular connectivity, local recording, and battery backup; one does not imply the others. Arlo documents LTE connectivity and switching behavior for its Go 2 model VML2030, subject to settings and cellular coverage. Privacy-sensitive indoor monitoring
Compare where footage is stored, whether an account or cloud relay is involved, the update policy, and app permissions. Also consider whether you can physically disable or cover the camera when it is not in use; neither product category is inherently safer in every setup.

What you need to set up a phone camera
Use a phone with a working camera, stable Wi-Fi, enough storage, and an operating system supported by the chosen app. A common arrangement runs a camera app on the spare phone and a viewer app or account on a second device. - Place the phone securely for the desired view, keeping the camera and airflow unobstructed.
- Use a suitable charger and cable. Keep the phone ventilated and away from direct sunlight and fabric; do not use a device with a swollen, damaged, or unstable battery.
- Test live viewing and at least one event or recording, then confirm where clips are stored and how long they are retained.
- Check that the phone’s operating system is still supported. An old phone may no longer receive security updates, so avoid unnecessarily exposing an unsupported device.
Local recording is not the same as remote viewing
A phone may be able to record locally without internet while still being unreachable from outside the local network. Whether that works depends on the app and network configuration. SpareCam describes a LAN-only mode for devices on a usable shared local network and a separate cloud-assisted route for viewing across different networks; those are service-specific features, not a general capability of every phone-camera app. SpareCam describes itself as an Android closed beta, and its availability and features may change. Questions to check before relying on either camera
- Does it record continuously, only on events, or both?
- Where are recordings stored, what is the retention period, and is a subscription or account required?
- Will the camera continue recording if internet access fails, and will you still be able to view it?
- What happens if power fails? Does the specific model have a battery or another backup?
- For outdoor use, is the exact device rated for the location and installation conditions?
- Does the device and its app still receive security updates?
