There is no universal phone-repair gadget kit: the right tools depend on the exact phone model, the part being repaired, and how the device is opened. A precision screwdriver set, opening picks, and sometimes a suction tool are common categories, but check a model-specific repair manual before buying anything or opening the phone.
What tools do you need to repair a phone?
Start with the repair procedure for your exact model. A tool that fits one phone may not fit another, and not every repair uses every bit or opening tool. For example, iFixit’s phone tools catalog lists precision drivers, suction tools, a cleaning kit, and a magnetic mat; its EDU tools resource describes a 64-bit driver kit with bit families including Phillips, Torx, and flathead.

- Precision screwdriver kit: A useful starting category for small device screws. Match the driver and bit to the exact model; a large bit assortment does not mean every bit is needed.
- Opening picks: Thin picks can help separate bonded parts when the model’s procedure calls for them. The iFixit iPhone 12 mini screen replacement guide, for example, lists opening picks among its required tools.
- Suction tool: Some screen-opening procedures use suction to lift an assembly. Whether it is suitable depends on the screen condition and the prescribed opening method.
- Magnetic work mat: An optional way to keep screws and small parts organized. It is an organization aid, not a requirement for every repair.
- Heat source: Some adhesive-sealed repairs involve heat. Use only the method and safety guidance in the model-specific procedure; an iFixit repair document warns that excessive heat can damage screens and batteries. A generic heat gun is not a universal beginner-safe choice.
What is a good starter toolkit for beginners?
A precision electronics screwdriver kit is a reasonable first purchase if you expect to work on small electronics, but it does not guarantee that you have every tool a particular phone repair requires. Before buying, compare the kit’s bits and accessories with the exact repair guide. Add opening picks or a suction tool only if that procedure calls for them; consider a magnetic mat if keeping tiny parts sorted would help.

Do you need special tools to replace an iPhone battery?
Often, yes: use the exact iPhone repair manual to identify the required tools, parts, opening method, and safety steps. Apple’s Self Service Repair route provides genuine parts, tools, and manuals for eligible out-of-warranty repairs. Apple says the program is intended for people with experience repairing electronic devices, rather than presenting it as a universal novice repair option.
The iPhone 15 Repair Manual, published June 4, 2025, includes battery and broken-glass safety topics as well as procedures for battery, display, back glass, and the USB-C connector. Follow the manual for the specific model; do not infer that the same battery procedure or toolkit applies to every iPhone.

How to choose tools before starting
- Identify the exact phone. Confirm the model, not just the brand or product family.
- Choose the repair. Screen, battery, and charging-port procedures may use different tools and involve different risks.
- Check screws and opening method. Confirm driver compatibility and whether the guide calls for picks, suction, or controlled heat.
- Read the safety steps before disassembly. Pay particular attention to battery and broken-glass warnings.
- Check for post-repair requirements. The manual may specify calibration or software steps in addition to physical tools.
Apple’s genuine display and camera guidance explains that parts behavior and status can depend on model, operating system, and repair history. Some repairs may require software such as Repair Assistant or System Configuration. Buying tools alone therefore does not guarantee that every feature will work as expected after a repair.

Apple’s self-repair availability is limited to eligible products and locations; check the program information for the relevant model and region. For any brand, a repair guide should be the deciding reference—not a generic toolkit list.
