Privacy depends on whether an app shows your number, lets people find your account by number, exposes usernames to search, and still requires a number to register.
What “more private” means in messaging
A phone number can serve two roles: contact detail shared with another person and a way to find an account. Hiding the number from a chat partner does not necessarily stop people from discovering an account through it. A username can avoid disclosing the number directly, but a public, distinctive, or reused username may make an account easier to find or connect to you elsewhere.

- Number visibility: Can the person you contact see your phone number?
- Number-based discovery: Can someone use your number to find your account?
- Username discovery: Can strangers search for or guess your username?
- Registration: Does the service still require a phone number to create an account?
These are identifier-privacy questions, not a complete assessment of encryption, provider-handled metadata, or anonymity from the service.
How Signal, WhatsApp, and Telegram compare
| Privacy question | Signal | Telegram | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Can a username help you contact someone without sharing your number? | Yes. You can start a chat using a username. | Yes, if usernames are available on the account. | Yes. Someone can contact you through your username without knowing your number. |
| Does the service still use a phone number for registration or accounts? | Yes. Signal requires a number to register, even when you use a username to start chats. | WhatsApp accounts use a phone-number model; its username feature is intended to reduce number exposure to new contacts. | Telegram requests a mobile number to create an account; privacy settings affect what other users see. |
| Can someone search for a username they do not already know? | Signal’s cited support guidance describes connecting with an exact username, not an open username directory. | No. WhatsApp says you cannot search for a username you do not already know. | Yes. Telegram usernames are public and can appear in global search. |
| Key tradeoff | Less number exposure to a chat partner, but registration still requires a number; limiting number discovery may make you harder to find. | Less number exposure to new contacts, but availability is rolling out and an optional username key can limit who initiates contact. | You can hide your number from other users, but a public username can make you discoverable. |
App labels and availability can vary by version. The comparison concerns identifiers and discoverability, not a ranking of overall security.

Signal: separate controls for number visibility and discovery
Signal distinguishes who can see your number from who can find you by it. Review both settings if you want to limit number exposure. To start a conversation without giving a new contact your number, share your exact Signal username instead. Signal still requires a phone number to register, even when you use a username for chats. Signal Support explains phone-number privacy and usernames; the EFF’s Signal guide also describes using Signal.
WhatsApp: usernames reduce number exposure, with a gradual rollout
WhatsApp says that, with a username, your number will not be visible when you message or call someone who does not already have it saved in their contacts. The feature is rolling out gradually, so it may not yet be available to every account. WhatsApp also says a person cannot search for a username they do not already know; an optional username key can add a barrier to unwanted contact. Choose a handle that does not reveal an identity you want to keep separate, especially if you use the same one publicly elsewhere. See WhatsApp’s About usernames help page, its username FAQ, and its guidance on sharing your phone number with businesses.

Telegram: phone-number privacy versus public usernames
Telegram lets you adjust phone-number privacy, and people can contact you using a username without knowing your number. The tradeoff is that Telegram usernames are public: choosing one can make you findable in global search and open to messages from people who do not have your number. Review Settings > Privacy and Security > Phone Number. If broad discoverability is not what you want, do not set a public username or reconsider whether that reachability is worth it. Telegram describes this behavior in its FAQ and Privacy Policy.
Choose the identifier that fits your concern
- You do not want a new contact to see your number: Use a username where the app supports it, and check the feature is available on your account.
- You do not want people finding your account by number: Check the app’s number-discovery control separately from number visibility; Signal explicitly offers separate settings.
- You want to avoid open-ended username discovery: WhatsApp says usernames are not searchable unless the seeker already knows them. Telegram usernames are public and globally searchable.
- You do not want to expose a public identity: Avoid a distinctive username reused on public profiles, and consider whether a service’s registration requirements fit your needs.
Share an identifier through a channel appropriate to the relationship, and verify a person independently before acting on sensitive requests. A username or phone number alone does not prove who controls an account.
