Phones have multiple rear cameras to capture different views and support specialized shots—not simply to make photos better. A common four-camera layout combines a main camera, an ultra-wide camera, a macro camera and a depth camera. But camera count is not a quality score, and a feature such as macro or zoom does not always require its own separate lens.
What the four cameras are for
Samsung’s Galaxy A23 is one example of a four-rear-camera arrangement: its cameras are described as main, ultra-wide, macro and depth. The roles are common, not a universal standard; manufacturers can arrange their systems differently.

These figures describe one model’s listed hardware, not the performance of all four-camera phones. Each camera’s usefulness depends on its implementation and the image processing around it.

Why four cameras do not mean four separate features
A camera feature does not always correspond to a dedicated module. Apple’s iPhone 17 specifications describe optical-quality 2x telephoto framing enabled by the main camera, and macro photography supported by the separate ultra-wide camera. Its listed main and ultra-wide cameras are both 48 MP. The phone’s named camera modes therefore do not map one-to-one to extra lenses.

Software also coordinates the cameras. Apple’s developer documentation describes a built-in triple-camera system with fixed-focal-length ultra-wide, wide and telephoto cameras. The system can switch automatically between cameras depending on zoom factor, light level and focus position, and can capture photos from its constituent cameras in one request. Apple also documents image fusion between wide and telephoto cameras for higher-quality zoom, and depth information derived from differences between camera images. These are examples of how a camera system can work together rather than four independent cameras acting alone.
How to judge a phone’s camera system
When comparing phones, look at what each camera can do and how well the specific model performs. A higher camera count or resolution alone does not establish better photographs.

- Main camera: Check stabilization as well as resolution, and look for sample photos from the exact model. Samsung lists OIS for the Galaxy A23 main camera; that is a feature specification, not independent evidence of image quality.
- Zoom: Find out whether the phone has a dedicated telephoto camera or achieves a particular framing through another camera and processing. Apple’s description of the iPhone 17’s optical-quality 2x framing as enabled by the main camera illustrates why the feature name alone does not tell you how many modules are involved.
- Ultra-wide: Consider its field of view and image quality, including toward the edges. Apple lists a 120° field of view for the iPhone 17 ultra-wide camera; that figure is specific to that model.
- Macro and depth: Check whether the macro mode produces useful close-ups and whether depth features matter to your photography. A camera’s presence on a specification sheet does not by itself establish how useful its results will be.
- Real photos: Review images or tests for the exact phone, ideally in the conditions you care about, such as low light or close focus. No comparative image-quality test is established by the specifications cited here.
The practical answer
Four rear cameras give a phone more ways to frame or process a shot: a standard view, a wider view, close-ups and depth effects are one common combination. Other phones may deliver zoom, macro or depth-related functions through a different mix of cameras and software. Choose by the capabilities and results of the particular model, not by the number of circles on its back.
