Phison’s E29T Gen4 SSD Controller: What the 2024 Announcement Means

The PS5029-E29T brings near-maximum PCIe 4.0 throughput to a DRAM-less TLC/QLC platform, but finished SSD performance depends on NAND, firmware, capacity and cooling.

Phison introduced the PS5029-E29T at FMS 2024 (August 6–8, 2024) as a DRAM-less, four-channel PCIe 4.0 x4 controller for mainstream client SSDs. Phison rates the platform for up to 7,400 MB/s sequential reads, 6,600 MB/s sequential writes and 8TB capacities, but those are controller or reference-design limits—not guarantees for every finished drive.

The E29T is an SSD component, not a retail SSD by itself. NAND, firmware, board layout, cooling, capacity and warranty policy will determine how an actual E29T-based drive performs.

What Phison actually announced

Phison presented the E29T as a power-optimized PCIe Gen4 x4 platform for client storage. Its announcement was made in 2024, and Phison’s August 10, 2024 article described it as the company’s fastest PCIe 4.0 controller at that time. The positioning covers consumer desktops, notebooks, OEM systems, gaming PCs and other client devices rather than enterprise or data-center SSDs.

“Mainstream” describes the target market, not a guaranteed retail price or performance tier. Phison’s current product information still lists the controller, while the available official material does not establish a complete, current roster of retail drives using it.

What the E29T is—and is not

The PS5029-E29T is a controller IC. A completed SSD also needs NAND flash packages, firmware, a printed circuit board, power-management components and thermal design. The E29T is designed for DRAM-less implementations, although the host system can provide mapping assistance through NVMe Host Memory Buffer (HMB).

That distinction matters when comparing products. Two SSDs can use the same E29T while differing substantially in NAND type, firmware, overprovisioning, cache policy, endurance rating and sustained-write behavior.

Why a DRAM-less Gen4 design still matters

PCIe 4.0 remains widespread in desktops, laptops, workstations and handheld gaming PCs. A 7,400 MB/s sequential-read ceiling is close to the practical upper limit of a PCIe 4.0 x4 SSD, so a Gen4 controller does not automatically mean outdated performance.

What HMB changes

With HMB, the SSD keeps its mapping data without a dedicated DRAM package, borrowing a small amount of host memory through the NVMe interface. This can reduce component cost, board space and potentially power consumption. The trade-off is greater dependence on host behavior and firmware; latency consistency and sustained workloads may differ from a well-tuned DRAM-equipped SSD.

  • SPEED UP PROJECTS. Launch creator applications fast with uncompromising PCIe 4.0 read speeds up to 7,100MB/s,[2] (1TB and 2TB[1] models) and write speeds up to 6,700MB/s[2] (1TB[1]-4TB[1] models).
  • CREATE AND STORE MORE. Make more room for your 4K videos and high-resolution images with capacities from 500GB[1] up to 4TB[1] on M.2 2280 built with our trusted 8th generation SANDISK BiCS QLC 3D CBA NAND.

  • UNCOMPROMISED RELIABILITY. With up to 1,200 TBW[3] (4TB[1] model) endurance rating, your drive is designed for creators.
  • KEEP YOUR DRIVE UPDATED. Monitor your SSD’s performance and check for updates with the downloadable SANDISK Dashboard application.[5]

“DRAM-less” is therefore a design description, not a quality verdict. The complete drive—not the controller label—determines the result.

Performance in context

Reference configuration Sequential read Sequential write
512GB Up to 7,200 MB/s Up to 5,000 MB/s
1TB Up to 7,400 MB/s Up to 6,100 MB/s
2TB Up to 7,400 MB/s Up to 6,400 MB/s
4TB Up to 7,400 MB/s Up to 6,200 MB/s

These figures come from Phison’s reference solution and specified CrystalDiskMark/Iometer conditions. They are not universal retail results. Lower-capacity models may have fewer NAND dies and less parallelism. QLC versions can behave differently from TLC versions, and a dynamic or static SLC cache can make short benchmark bursts much faster than long writes after the cache fills. Queue depth, test size, firmware, free space and temperature also affect results.

The same brochure lists approximately 3.85–4.35W active power, 50mW idle power and 5mW in PS4/L1.2 under its stated conditions. It gives reference TBW values of 300TB, 600TB, 1,200TB and 2,400TB for 512GB, 1TB, 2TB and 4TB configurations, plus a 1.5-million-hour MTBF and UBER below 10-16 bits. These are reference-platform values, not specifications that every E29T retail SSD must carry.

TLC, QLC and capacity can change the experience

The controller supports both 3D TLC and 3D QLC, giving SSD makers flexibility as flash generations and pricing change.

  • TLC: generally offers stronger endurance and more consistent sustained writes, although the NAND generation and firmware still matter.
  • QLC: can enable high capacities and attractive pricing, but long writes after the SLC cache is exhausted may slow considerably.
  • Capacity: 512GB, 1TB, 2TB and 4TB models can use different numbers of NAND dies and therefore deliver different write speeds. The controller is specified for up to 8TB, but that does not prove that an 8TB retail drive is broadly available.

Thermals are another implementation variable. The controller’s 0–70°C operating specification does not guarantee maximum speed in a thin laptop or handheld. Airflow, motherboard heatsinks, enclosure design, firmware throttling and NAND temperature all contribute.

How it fits Phison’s controller family

Controller family High-level context
E29T DRAM-less PCIe 4.0 platform; up to 7,400/6,600 MB/s; TLC and QLC support
E27T Also listed as a PCIe 4.0 M.2 controller with the same headline 7,400/6,600 MB/s and 1,000K/1,400K IOPS ratings; official material does not establish a definitive performance hierarchy
E21T DRAM-less PCIe 4.0 controller with lower headline performance and different capacity/form-factor ranges
E18 Higher-performance PCIe 4.0 family commonly paired with dedicated DRAM; not an apples-to-apples comparison with E29T
E31T and E37T PCIe 5.0 families aimed at newer platforms; their interface generation is different from E29T’s Gen4 value proposition

What to check before buying an E29T-based drive

  1. Confirm the exact NAND type and generation, not just “Phison Gen4.”
  2. Check whether the drive uses TLC or QLC and read its endurance rating.
  3. Look for sustained-write tests after the SLC cache is full.
  4. Compare independent thermal results and verify heatsink or airflow requirements.
  5. Check the actual capacity, M.2 length (such as 2230 or 2280), device clearance and BIOS support.
  6. Review warranty duration, TBW limit and firmware-update support.
  7. Use operating-system responsiveness and random-workload reviews, not sequential speed alone.
  8. Confirm the manufacturer identifies the controller; do not infer E29T usage from vague retailer language.

Availability and the practical verdict

Phison’s official pages establish the E29T as an active controller platform, but they do not provide a definitive current list of consumer SSD models shipping with it or a universal release schedule. For OEMs and SSD brands, the relevant information is on Phison’s product page and corporate site; those are not consumer checkout pages.

The E29T’s significance is its combination of near-top-end PCIe 4.0 throughput, four-channel DRAM-less design, TLC/QLC flexibility and power- and cost-conscious implementation. Whether a particular drive is good value depends on its NAND, firmware, capacity, cooling, endurance and warranty. Treat the controller as a useful clue—not a substitute for drive-level testing.
