The announced effective closure date was September 30. The Academy itself is not closing: its research, collections, library and archives continue, while the future of the Parkway building and any new public museum experience remains unsettled.
Which Philadelphia museum closed?
It was the public museum of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University, a natural-history museum on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. The Academy was founded in 1812; its museum opened to the public in 1828. The 198 years refer to the museum’s public history, not the age of the Academy. Drexel and Academy leaders announced the closure on September 1, 2026, and the last public visiting day was September 27. The Academy and Drexel’s announcement and Philadelphia City Council’s September 17 resolution identify September 30 as the effective closure date.
Why did it close?
Drexel and Academy leaders said visitor patterns changed in lasting ways after the pandemic while operating costs continued to rise. They said continuing the museum in its existing building and form would put increasing pressure on resources needed to care for collections and sustain scientific research. In their announcement, Drexel President Antonio Merlo and Academy Board Chair Suzanne Biemiller described these as “fundamental changes in the economics of the Academy’s operational model.” That is the leadership’s stated rationale; the available reporting does not establish that it is the only factor behind the decision.
The closure prompted protests and an effort by the Save the Academy coalition, an advocacy group, to keep the museum open. The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that a William Penn Foundation offer of temporary operating support had not produced an immediate reopening as of September 28; Drexel had neither accepted nor rejected it in that account. The museum nevertheless closed to visitors on September 27. The Inquirer’s September 28 report describes the offer and the unresolved next steps.

What remains open, and what happens to the specimens?
The closure ended public access to the galleries, not the Academy’s scientific work. In a September 25 FAQ, the Academy said its collections, library and archives remain available for research and education, and that scientific research—including work of the Ruth Patrick Center for Environmental Research—continues. The Academy also said the specimens and original scientific materials will be preserved as part of its collections while exhibit plans are evaluated. The Academy’s closure FAQ states: “Access to and use of the Academy’s collections will not be affected by the museum’s closure.” That assurance concerns collection access for research and education, not public gallery entry.
The collections comprise more than 19 million biological specimens, fossils, archives and other scientific resources, according to the Academy and City Council materials. The Academy also reports more than 73,000 type specimens and a library of more than 75,000 titles, including rare volumes dating to 1529. These scientific resources are distinct from the public exhibits where visitors encountered them.

How might the public see collection material?
The Academy says the collections were not historically open to unrestricted public access, and expects public encounters to continue in part through loans to exhibitions at other institutions. As of its September 25 FAQ, specific exhibit plans were pending. Loans could offer future opportunities to see selected objects, but they are not the same as a permanent museum open to visitors.
What is known about the building and a possible future museum?
The plans remain unresolved. The Academy’s September 25 FAQ said the Parkway building would continue to house collections, research activities and exhibit materials while options were considered. Two days later, the Inquirer reported that leaders had discussed moving collections and selling the building, and envisioned a future public-facing experience elsewhere without providing details. Those reports do not establish that the building has been sold, that the collections have moved, or that a successor museum will open.

The Academy dates to 1812, well before its public museum opened in 1828, and it affiliated with Drexel in 2011. Its research and stewardship mission therefore continues separately from the closed visitor venue, though the building’s eventual use and the form of any future public experience remain uncertain.

The Franklin Institute is a separate Philadelphia museum with hands-on exhibits and the Fels Planetarium; it is an alternative for a science-focused outing, not a replacement for the Academy’s natural-history collections. Its official visitor page lists its address and daily hours, which are worth checking before a visit because schedules and exhibits can change. See the Franklin Institute’s visitor information.
