Game 1 as an early warning sign—not a guarantee
CBS Sports reported that the Game 1 winner advanced in 19 of the first 20 Wild Card Series played under the format introduced in 2022. That historical comparison makes an opening win notable, but it is not a prediction or proof that winning Game 1 causes a team to advance; it is CBS Sports’ reported tally for those first 20 series.
What do the reported attendance figures show?
The Associated Press reported attendance below listed venue capacity at both Tuesday afternoon games. Atlanta drew 30,127 for its 2 p.m. local start at Truist Park, which AP listed at 41,108 capacity. Houston announced 34,011 for its 4 p.m. local game at Daikin Park, whose capacity AP listed as 41,168.

AP also reported that six of 26 afternoon Wild Card Series games through September 29, 2026, had reached or exceeded capacity since the 12-team format became permanent in 2022. That count is specific to afternoon games and its stated cutoff. It does not establish overall postseason demand or explain why individual fans did or did not attend.

The 12-team postseason eliminated regular-season tiebreaker games. MLB says the first tiebreaker is head-to-head season-series record; if teams remain tied, the next criterion is the result of the previous intraleague game on the schedule. Those rules determine postseason qualification and seeding before the Wild Card Series begin.
