Can PhantomJS create PDFs?
Yes. PhantomJS documents PDF output through page.render(), alongside PNG, JPEG, BMP, PPM, and conditional GIF. That confirms the method can produce those file types; it does not establish parity with current browsers or guarantee that a particular page will render correctly. Choose by testing the pages and deployment you actually need, not by assuming that two tools associated with Qt WebKit produce identical output. PhantomJS itself cautions that web-standard support should be detected and tested rather than presumed. Supported web standards

How to compare them on your workload
Build a small representative test set before changing a production renderer. Include the actual content, browser-visible states, and output constraints that matter to your application. Compare screenshots or PDFs side by side and record discrepancies rather than relying on a browser-family label.
- List required outputs. Decide whether you need viewport or full-page images, PDF documents, particular image formats, or page and sizing controls. PhantomJS explicitly documents image and PDF output;
wkhtmltoimageis the image tool. - Choose representative pages. Include pages with the CSS, JavaScript, fonts, SVG or canvas, and remote assets used in production. Check whether content appears only after interaction or asynchronous loading.
- Check timing and completeness. Verify that each capture includes the expected content and assets at the time it is rendered. Test pages with delayed elements and failures loading remote resources.
- Verify deployment constraints. Test the exact binary and build on the target operating system. Check packaging, required libraries, reproducibility, and operational support; the project materials cited here do not establish a current compatibility matrix for every platform or build.
- Review maintenance and exposure. Identify the engine and dependencies you would need to update, and consider whether the renderer will load untrusted URLs or content. Archived or suspended project status is a maintenance concern, not a security audit or proof that a particular deployment is secure or insecure.
- Estimate migration effort. Compare layouts, fonts, pagination, and capture behavior in a maintained alternative before replacing a working pipeline.
