For new website screenshot automation, choose Playwright. Its current documentation covers Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit, and Playwright Test can compare screenshots against saved baselines. PhantomJS can still capture screenshots, but its project says development is suspended, so it is best treated as a legacy tool rather than a starting point for new work.
PhantomJS vs Playwright at a glance
| Area | PhantomJS | Playwright | What it means for screenshot work |
|---|---|---|---|
| Project status | Its official homepage says development is suspended. | Current browser and API documentation is available. | Prefer Playwright for new projects; account for migration work if you have PhantomJS scripts. |
| Browser engines | Uses QtWebKit, as identified on its project homepage. | Documents Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit projects. | Playwright provides a broader documented browser-engine matrix. |
| Capturing screenshots | Its guide documents page rendering, viewport sizing, clipping, and PNG, JPEG, GIF, and PDF output. | The Page API has screenshot options; Playwright Test also supports screenshot assertions. | Both can capture pages. The choice is more about maintenance, browser coverage, and testing workflow than the mere ability to save an image. |
| Visual regression testing | The reviewed guide describes capture, not a current first-party visual-comparison workflow. | Playwright Test can create reference screenshots and compare later runs. | Favor Playwright when screenshot assertions are part of the test suite. |
| Repeatability | The reviewed capture material does not establish current reproducibility guarantees. | Documentation warns that rendering can vary with environment and browser conditions. | Keep the baseline and comparison environment consistent, and review intentional visual changes. |
Can PhantomJS still take screenshots?
Yes. PhantomJS’s official screenshot guide shows opening a page and rendering it to an image. It documents PNG, JPEG, GIF, and PDF output, along with viewport size and a clip rectangle. It also describes capturing HTML and CSS content, SVG, images, and Canvas. Its limitation for a new project is not an absence of screenshot features: the project homepage states, “Important: PhantomJS development is suspended until further notice.” See the PhantomJS project homepage and its screen capture guide.

That makes PhantomJS reasonable to keep running where a legacy system depends on it and the current output meets your needs. For new automation, suspended development is a material maintenance risk: do not assume new browser behavior or ongoing updates will be available.

Documented multi-browser coverage
Playwright documents projects for Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit. It also describes installing browser binaries through its CLI and using branded Chrome and Edge channels. This gives teams a defined way to run captures across several browser engines or target supported branded browsers. Browser versions evolve with Playwright releases, so include browser installation and updates in CI maintenance. Consult the Playwright browser documentation for the supported setup details.

Capture and visual assertions in one workflow
The Page API supports screenshots through page.screenshot. Separately, Playwright Test offers toHaveScreenshot(): the initial run creates a reference image, and later runs compare the page against it. When an expected change is reviewed and accepted, update the reference using the snapshot update option. Capture answers “what does this page look like?”; a visual assertion adds an automated check for whether it still looks as expected. See the Page screenshot API and visual comparison guidance.
It is not a guarantee of pixel-perfect or stable tests
Playwright warns that “Browser rendering can vary based on the host OS, version, settings, hardware, power source (battery vs. power adapter), headless mode, and other factors.” A screenshot test can therefore fail because the rendering environment changed, not only because the application introduced a meaningful visual regression. Use a consistent environment and control volatile page content; Playwright’s visual-comparison guidance describes filtering changing elements with a custom stylesheet.

How to decide whether to migrate
- Starting from scratch: Use Playwright when you need maintained browser automation, documented Chromium/Firefox/WebKit coverage, or screenshot assertions.
- Maintaining an existing PhantomJS job: Keep it only if its legacy compatibility and current output justify the maintenance trade-off. Plan a migration if browser coverage or continued upkeep matters.
- Checking layout changes: Use Playwright Test screenshot baselines, but run comparisons in the same operating-system and browser environment as the baseline and review updated references deliberately.
- Need a timing or fidelity winner: The cited official documentation does not provide a head-to-head speed, accuracy, or reliability benchmark. Choose based on project status and required workflow, not an unsupported performance claim.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is a clean website screenshot rather than maintaining browser automation, try ScreenshotNeo first. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server from Yorker Media: one GET request takes a URL and returns an image or PDF. Before capture, it accepts the cookie or consent banner as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. AI agents can use its MCP server tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.

No. A screenshot assertion checks rendered appearance against a reference; it does not by itself verify that application behavior is correct.
