What is Phantom Blade Zero about?
Phantom Blade Zero follows Soul, an elite assassin accused of killing the patriarch of the Order he serves. A healer saves him with a makeshift cure, but it will keep him alive for only 66 days. Soul must uncover the conspiracy behind the killing before that deadline expires. S-Game founder and CEO Soulframe Liang introduced the game as the spiritual rebirth of Rainblood, the series that grew into the Phantom Blade franchise. The game is being developed in Unreal Engine 5, according to the official PlayStation.Blog introduction.

How is it connected to John Wick?
The connection is an influence, not a shared story or licensed adaptation. S-Game names Donnie Yen’s role in John Wick: Chapter 4 among the pop-culture references informing the game’s martial-arts lineage. That gives the comparison a concrete basis, but it does not establish that the game will reproduce the films’ pacing, tone or quality.
There is also a direct creative link: Game Informer reports that Yen contributes his voice, face model and motion capture to Mó Yuan, and serves as a creative consultant. Those credits connect the game to a martial-arts film veteran’s performance and expertise; they are not a review or a guarantee of the finished game’s reception.

What does “Kungfupunk” mean?
“Kungfupunk” is S-Game’s name for the game’s overall art direction. In Liang’s description, the Phantom World blends Chinese kung fu with intricate machines that have steampunk qualities, occult arts and elements that do not fit neatly into any one category. The term points to a stylized fantasy setting, rather than a conventional historical martial-arts world.
The combat is intended to support that identity. Liang says: “Combat moves in Phantom Blade Zero have to be made with handcrafted animation, because motion capturing can’t do it justice.” That is the studio’s stated approach to animation, not independent evidence of how the combat will feel to play.

When does Phantom Blade Zero release, and what platforms are confirmed?
The official announcement named PlayStation 5 as a platform. A GamesRadar release-date roundup published five days before this article’s research lists October 29, 2026, as the release date. The date is secondary reporting, so check the GamesRadar roundup and official channels for updates before making plans. The sources cited here establish PS5, but do not confirm another platform.
Could it be 2026’s best game?
That is a prediction, not an established ranking. The game’s combination of handcrafted martial-arts animation, occult fantasy, machinery and a time-limited assassin story gives it a distinctive pitch. Donnie Yen’s reported performance and consulting work add a relevant creative connection. None of those points establishes review scores, award prospects or a year-best consensus before release.

S-Game said in 2023 that the wider Rainblood/Phantom Blade franchise had over 20 million fans. That is the developer’s claim about the franchise, not sales or an audience count for Phantom Blade Zero itself.
