PFAS-Free Cookware: What to Look For and Which Alternatives Work

Uncoated stainless steel and cast iron are straightforward PFAS-avoidance choices. Ceramic can be an option, but verify the exact product’s coating disclosure.

If you want to avoid PFAS in cookware, the clearest choices are uncoated stainless steel and cast iron. Ceramic cookware may also suit you, but the word “ceramic” alone does not confirm what a pan’s cooking surface contains. For any coated pan, check the manufacturer’s disclosure for the exact product and look for an explicit PFAS-free claim.

That choice is separate from the FDA’s assessment of authorized nonstick coatings: the agency says studies show negligible amounts migrate from some PFAS-containing coatings to food. You can still prefer cookware without PFAS; the available evidence does not support treating every properly used PTFE-style pan as harmful.

What does “PFAS-free cookware” mean?

PFAS is a broad group of thousands of chemicals, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). A claim that a pan is “PFOA-free” or “PTFE-free” is narrower than a claim that it contains no PFAS. Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department likewise cautions that a pan labeled only PTFE-free or PFOA-free may still contain PFAS (its cookware alternatives guidance).

If your goal is to avoid a PFAS-containing nonstick layer, choosing uncoated cookware avoids the ambiguity of a coating claim. If you want a coated pan, ask what the manufacturer’s PFAS-free statement covers: the cooking surface, other components, or the whole product. Do not assume a broad “nonstick” label answers that question.

Which cookware alternatives work?

Option Why consider it What to expect

Uncoated stainless steel

Public-health guidance identifies stainless steel as an option for avoiding PFAS-containing cookware coatings. Search for an uncoated stainless steel frying pan if you need a familiar skillet shape. There is no synthetic nonstick layer, so food release depends more on cooking technique. Do not expect the same effortless release as from a coated pan.

Cast iron

Cast iron is another uncoated option identified by public-health guidance. It requires care and seasoning; it is not a factory-style nonstick surface. Consider the added maintenance and handling before switching.

Ceramic cookware

Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department names ceramic cookware among the alternatives. “Ceramic” by itself does not establish a product’s ingredients. Check the exact manufacturer and model for a clear PFAS statement before buying.

These are material-based options, not a tested brand ranking. Choose by balancing nonstick convenience against technique, care, weight and handling, and whether the product’s disclosure meets your preference. No comparative durability or lifespan result is established here.

How to check a pan’s PFAS claim

  1. Identify the exact product. Check the manufacturer’s product page or label for the specific pan and cooking surface, rather than relying on a retailer category or a general description such as “ceramic.”
  2. Look for an explicit PFAS statement. “PFOA-free” or “PTFE-free” alone does not confirm that all PFAS are absent.
  3. Clarify the claim’s scope. If the wording is unclear, ask the manufacturer whether it applies to the cooking surface or the entire product, and what it means by PFAS-free.
  4. Read certifications carefully. The health department suggests checking product labels and ingredient-assessment certifications such as EPA Safer Choice, Cradle to Cradle Certified, and GreenScreen Certified. Do not treat a certification as proof about a particular pan unless that product’s certification and scope are confirmed.

What the FDA says about PFAS and nonstick cookware

The FDA says some PFAS-containing nonstick coatings are authorized for food-contact use. Its authorizations are specific to manufacturers or suppliers and are based on data supporting reasonable certainty of no harm for the intended use; the agency may review them as new information arises. For some nonstick coatings, FDA describes PFAS molecules as polymerized and applied at high temperatures so they bind to the pan. The manufacturing process removes virtually all smaller migratable molecules. The agency’s statement is: “Studies show negligible amounts of PFAS in this coating can migrate to food” (FDA, “Authorized Uses of PFAS in Food Contact Applications”).

  • 10X MORE METAL UTENSIL SAFE: Ultra-tough ceramic coating stands up to metal utensils without compromising nonstick performance. Silicone tools recommended.

This is a statement about the authorized food-contact uses and coatings FDA discusses, not a claim that every PFAS exposure source is harmless. FDA reports that, in its Total Diet Study, PFAS were not detected above method detection limits in over 95% (1,290 of 1,352) of fresh and processed foods tested; it detected PFAS in 69% (46 of 67) of seafood samples in that study. Those figures describe the samples and scope of that FDA study, not all foods or all possible exposures.

Two FDA updates concern paper packaging, not cookware: as of February 28, 2024, manufacturers were no longer selling PFAS-containing grease-proofing substances for U.S. food-contact use on paper and paperboard; in January 2025, FDA said 35 related food-contact notifications were no longer effective after those uses were abandoned. They should not be read as announcements about nonstick pans.

A separate cookware safety check: lead alerts

PFAS is not the only cookware issue consumers may encounter. The FDA has warned about certain imported aluminum, brass, and aluminum-alloy cookware that may leach lead into food. It advises consumers not to use the listed products, and says the list may expand as it receives information. Check the current FDA lead alert against a specific product. This is a separate lead warning, not evidence that cookware generally is unsafe or a finding about PFAS.
