To change the sound for most alerts, open Settings > Sounds and vibration > Notification sound and pick a tone. To give one app its own sound, open that app’s notification settings and choose a sound there. To use a song or other audio file of your own, copy it into the phone’s internal-storage Notifications folder first, after which it can be selected from the same sound list.
Samsung’s instructions differ by model, region and software version, so menu names on your phone may not match every label below. Where a path applies only to a specific version, the section says so.

Choose the level of control you need
There are two levels of notification sound on a Galaxy phone. The first sets one default for the whole phone. The second overrides that default for a single app or, on newer One UI versions, for one notification category inside an app.

Change the default notification sound
- Open Settings.
- Tap Sounds and vibration.
- Tap Notification sound.
- Select the tone you want, then return to the previous screen to apply it.
Samsung’s Russian-language support article documents this path. The tone list and labels can differ by model and region.

Set a different sound for one app
Samsung documents two routes. Which one you see depends on your One UI version. Use the route that matches the labels on your screen.

- Open Settings > Apps.
- Select the app.
- Tap Notifications > General notifications.
- Tap Sound and choose the tone.

- Open Settings > Notifications > App notifications.
- Select the app.
- Tap Notification categories, then select a category.
- Confirm that Allow notifications is on and that Alert is selected.
- Choose the sound.
If an app shows no categories, or the category sound option is missing, the app may not expose categories on your phone. In that case, use the general app route if it is listed.

Use your own audio file as a notification sound
A song will not appear in the sound list just because it is in your Music library. Samsung’s guidance says the file must be in the phone’s internal-storage Notifications folder before it shows up in the notification-sound list. Steps below follow Samsung’s My Files instructions.

- Open the My Files app and find the audio file.
- Select the file and copy it.
- Open Internal storage.
- Open the Notifications folder. Samsung’s India article notes that if no Notifications folder exists, you should create one in internal storage. Some Samsung guidance spells the folder Notification; use whichever name is already on your phone.
- Tap Copy here.
- Go to Settings > Sounds and vibration > Notification sound and select the file from the list.
If you cannot hear notification sounds
If the new tone does not play, check the phone’s sound mode before changing anything else. Samsung India support states in its article, last updated 30 September 2024:
“If you are unable to hear your Notification sounds, ensure you have set your Sound Mode has been set to Sound.”

- Confirm that Sound Mode is set to Sound, not vibrate or silent.
- Re-select the tone in Notification sound and play a test notification.
- For a single app, confirm that its notifications are allowed and that the correct sound option is set.
Menu differences to expect
- Labels such as Notifications, General notifications and Notification categories vary by One UI version and by model.
- The category route is documented for One UI 7. Older One UI versions may show only the general app route, or different names for the same screens.
- Folder names in the copy step may differ between Samsung’s guides, so check for both Notifications and Notification in internal storage.
