Spot is generally the more direct route to owning crypto, while perpetuals add funding payments and, when traded on margin, leverage and liquidation risk. Neither is risk-free, and the right comparison depends on the exact contract, platform, holding period, and jurisdiction.
How spot trading and perpetual futures differ
| Factor | Spot trading | Perpetual futures |
|---|---|---|
| What you trade | A cash-market purchase or sale of the crypto asset. | A derivative contract whose value references an asset price; the contract is not the asset itself. |
| Ownership | A purchase is for the asset, although the platform or another custodian may hold it for you. | Holding a contract does not necessarily entitle you to receive the underlying crypto; settlement depends on the contract. |
| Expiry | The asset itself has no futures-contract expiry. | No fixed expiration date by definition. Funding payments help keep the contract price relatively aligned with spot. |
| Ongoing costs | Trading fees and, depending on the arrangement, spread, custody, or withdrawal charges. | Trading costs plus contract-specific, variable funding payments; collateral and liquidation terms also matter. |
| Leverage and liquidation | An unborrowed spot purchase does not have derivative-margin liquidation. Borrowed or leveraged spot products are a separate case. | Margin can magnify price exposure. Adverse moves may require more collateral or trigger a closeout. |
| Key operational risks | Asset custody, platform safeguards, and cash-market venue risks. | Venue and clearing arrangements, collateral, contract specifications, and margin rules. |
The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) describes buying bitcoin for a personal wallet as an example of a cash-market purchase, but actual custody arrangements vary. It also warns that virtual-currency cash markets may have limited government supervision and can involve volatility, manipulation, cyber risks, and platform conflicts (CFTC customer advisory).

What a perpetual futures contract is
A perpetual future is a derivative with no scheduled expiration. In a May 29, 2026 statement, CFTC Chairman Michael S. Selig described periodic funding-rate payments between counterparties as a mechanism intended to maintain relative parity with the underlying spot price. The payment formula, interval, limits, collateral, and settlement method depend on the specific contract and venue (CFTC chairman’s statement).
That absence of a fixed expiry distinguishes a perpetual from a dated futures contract, which expires. A trader maintaining a dated-futures position may need to replace an expiring contract—a process often called rolling. Perpetual funding is not the same thing as that rollover effect.

Do you own crypto when trading perpetual futures?
Not simply by holding the perpetual contract. Spot buying is a cash-market transaction for the asset, though the venue may custody it on your behalf. A futures contract instead creates contractual price exposure. Depending on its terms, it may settle in cash rather than deliver crypto.
The CFTC advises customers to check a futures contract’s settlement method and reference index; its general virtual-currency advisory says customers may not be entitled to receive the actual currency. Do not assume a particular perpetual is cash-settled or physically delivered without reading that contract’s specifications (CFTC customer advisory).

What costs should you compare?
A displayed trading commission is only part of the cost. For the actual product and intended holding period, compare the venue’s current fee schedule and the contract’s funding history, along with spread and any relevant custody, withdrawal, or collateral costs. The sources cited here do not establish universal fees or a current funding rate, so no single structure can be called categorically cheaper.

Why leverage changes the risk
With an unborrowed spot purchase, a fall in the asset’s market price reduces the value of the holding, but the position is not subject to futures-margin liquidation. A margin-based perpetual adds a different mechanism: leverage magnifies exposure relative to posted collateral, and an adverse price move may require additional margin or cause the platform to close the position. CFTC guidance warns that losses in leveraged futures can exceed the initial investment (CFTC customer advisory).
There is no universal liquidation price. Before trading, read the exact contract and account rules for initial and maintenance margin, mark-price methodology, collateral haircuts, liquidation fees, and whether margin is isolated to a position or shared across the account. A platform’s stated mechanics—not a generic leverage figure—determine how a position is handled.

Perpetuals generally add margin and liquidation risk when used with leverage, but spot trading is not automatically safe. The CFTC identifies possible cash-market risks that include weak or limited government supervision, inadequate platform safeguards, price swings, manipulation, cyber threats, and conflicts of interest. Holding crypto through a platform also makes the custody arrangement relevant.

Either can lose value, and neither label by itself establishes that a platform or product is safe.

Does regulation or access depend on location?
Yes. Availability depends on the specific contract, venue, and jurisdiction. On May 29, 2026, the CFTC announced an order permitting a designated contract market to list a bitcoin-spot-referencing perpetual, while noting that perpetuals referencing other asset classes warrant case-by-case review (CFTC policy statement release). This is a specific U.S. development, not evidence that every perpetual is authorized, available to retail traders, or accessible in every country. Check official regulator information, venue registration disclosures, and local eligibility rules for the product you are considering.
Quick Recap
A practical way to choose what to investigate
- If direct asset exposure matters: Check what a spot purchase entitles you to and who controls the asset’s custody and withdrawals.
- If considering a perpetual: Read the settlement, funding, collateral, margin, and liquidation terms for that exact contract.
- If comparing costs: Use the venue’s current fee schedule and relevant funding history for your expected holding period; include spreads and applicable custody or withdrawal costs.
- If location matters: Verify that the product and venue are available to you under local rules rather than relying on access claims for another jurisdiction.
