This guide shows how to compare your PC with those requirements, what the DirectX distinction means, what is and is not known about performance, and which troubleshooting steps are reasonable when frame rates or stability are poor.

Permafrost requirements at a glance
The official Steam listing, also reflected by the Epic Games Store listing, gives separate minimum and recommended configurations. The minimum tier describes the hardware class the developer expects to support; the recommended tier is the stronger target for more comfortable play. Neither tier includes an official resolution, graphics preset or frame-rate promise.

The 30 GB figure is the published free-space requirement. The listing does not state that an SSD is mandatory, so an SSD should not be presented as an official requirement. An SSD may still improve loading and general system responsiveness, but that is practical advice rather than a stated Permafrost specification.

Can your PC run Permafrost?
Compare your machine with the exact model numbers, not just a family name such as “Core i5” or “Radeon.” Two processors or graphics cards sharing a series name can have very different performance and memory capacities.
1. Identify your processor and installed memory
- Press Windows key + R, type
dxdiag, and press Enter. - On the System tab, read the operating-system entry, processor model and memory amount.
- Confirm that the operating system is 64-bit Windows 10. The store listing specifies Windows 10 x64; it does not publish a separate Windows 11 requirement.
Your processor should meet or exceed the minimum model in the table. The recommended CPUs are a substantial generation step up from the minimum pair. If your CPU is older or a lower-power laptop variant, model-specific performance can differ even when the name appears similar.
2. Check the exact graphics card and VRAM
- In
dxdiag, open the Display tab. - Record the graphics-card name and the displayed dedicated video memory.
- Compare both the model and VRAM with the listed tier. The minimum requires a GTX 1060 with 6GB or an RX 590 with 8GB; a card with less VRAM does not meet that stated minimum even if its branding sounds comparable.
The recommended tier calls for an RTX 3070 Ti with 8GB or an RX 6750 XT with 12GB. The jump in graphics hardware is much larger than the change in system memory, which remains 16 GB in both tiers.
3. Verify DirectX support
The minimum row lists DirectX 11, while the recommended row lists DirectX 12. Do not collapse those into one universal DirectX requirement. The dxdiag System tab shows the DirectX version installed on Windows; the Display tab can also reveal driver and feature information. A system that cannot provide the DirectX level expected by the game or its current renderer may encounter launch or rendering problems even when its processor and GPU look adequate.

4. Reserve enough storage
Make at least 30 GB available on the installation drive before downloading. This is the space named by both official hardware tiers. Updates, temporary files and the operating system can require additional working room, so leaving more than the bare figure is sensible, but no larger official number is published.
What the two tiers really tell you
Minimum is a compatibility target, not a performance guarantee
Meeting the minimum means your hardware is in the class the store page identifies for running the game. It does not establish a particular frame rate, resolution, preset or level of visual quality. The official listing contains no controlled benchmark tied to a test system, and no measured Permafrost result is available from the cited official sources.
Recommended is a stronger graphics target
The recommended GPU choices are considerably more capable than the minimum cards and carry modern feature support. Even so, “recommended” is not a promise of 60 frames per second or any other number. Results can vary with resolution, scene complexity, drivers, patches and background software. Areas containing many structures have generated individual player reports of frame-rate drops on the Steam community page; those comments are anecdotal and should not be treated as representative testing.

RAM is the same in both rows
Both tiers specify 16 GB of system memory. That does not mean every 16 GB configuration behaves identically: single-channel laptop memory, heavy background applications or memory shared with integrated graphics can reduce headroom. Close browsers, launchers and recording tools while troubleshooting, but regard this as general PC practice rather than a game-specific tuning result.

Performance settings and troubleshooting
No dependable Permafrost-specific preset recipe has been established. The following steps are general troubleshooting actions, and they should be tested one at a time so you can identify which change helps.
Install current graphics drivers
Use the current driver supplied for your exact GPU by its manufacturer, then restart Windows. Driver updates can fix crashes and shader-compilation problems, but they cannot turn hardware below the minimum specification into the recommended tier.
Check the current game patch
The Steam community page carries an October 9 developer hotfix note stating: “FSR is now disabled on NVIDIA RTX 40 and 50 series graphics cards, to cut down crashes on these GPUs.” This is a dated, GPU-specific workaround. It is not a universal recommendation to disable FSR, and the behavior may change in a later patch. If you use an RTX 40- or 50-series card, check the latest developer notes before changing upscaling options or diagnosing a crash.
Use a conservative troubleshooting baseline
- Start with the game’s default or lower-quality preset if you experience stutter, then change one option at a time.
- Reduce output resolution or demanding effects only as a diagnostic step; there is no verified Permafrost setting combination that guarantees a target frame rate.
- Turn off unnecessary overlays, capture utilities and background applications while testing.
- Watch GPU memory and system-memory usage. Sustained exhaustion can cause hitching even when average utilization looks high.
- Restart after a driver or game update if shader compilation or crashes persist.
These actions are ordinary PC troubleshooting, not measurements from a controlled Permafrost benchmark. Keep notes about the resolution, preset and location in the game when comparing results so that changes are meaningful.

When a structure-heavy area slows down
Player comments have described frame-rate drops in locations with many structures. Because those are individual reports, they do not prove that every system or hardware tier will show the same behavior. If you encounter it, record your GPU, CPU, resolution and preset, then test whether lowering scene-heavy options or output resolution changes the result. Report reproducible findings through the game’s official support or community channels rather than assuming the minimum specification is defective.
Early Access changes the answer
Permafrost entered Early Access on October 9, 2026. The developer’s Steam questionnaire says the plan is to remain in Early Access for at least 12 months while adding biomes, quests, mechanics, quality-of-life features and technical optimization. “At least 12 months” is a stated plan, not a fixed full-release date.
As content and rendering systems change, the published requirements, stability and performance can change as well. Recheck the Steam or Epic listing and the developer’s current patch notes after major updates. A PC that runs one build smoothly may need new driver or settings adjustments after a substantial content patch.

Do Unreal Engine recommendations change the game requirements?
Epic’s Unreal Engine 5.8 documentation recommends 32 GB of RAM, at least 8 GB of graphics memory and DirectX 12 for most games. Those figures describe recommended development hardware for the engine, not the Permafrost store requirements. The game’s own listing remains the authoritative source for its current minimum and recommended tiers, so do not replace its 16 GB RAM minimum or DirectX 11 minimum with the engine documentation.

Should you upgrade before installing?
If your GPU is below the minimum
Prioritize a graphics card that at least matches the GTX 1060 6GB or RX 590 8GB class, while checking the rest of your system for compatibility and power requirements. Matching the minimum still does not guarantee a particular frame rate. If you want more graphics headroom, the official recommended class begins at the RTX 3070 Ti 8GB or RX 6750 XT 12GB level.
If your CPU is below the minimum
Compare the exact processor model with the i5-8600K or Ryzen 5 3500 baseline. A CPU upgrade can be complicated by the motherboard socket, BIOS support and memory type, so verify platform compatibility before purchasing parts.
If you have less than 16 GB RAM
Adding memory to reach 16 GB aligns your system with both published tiers. Check whether your motherboard or laptop has an open slot and whether existing modules can run together at their rated speed.

Do not assume the hardware list is a benchmark. Confirm that the game is using the intended dedicated GPU, update drivers, close background software, verify the installation and check current patch notes. Capture the exact settings and location before seeking support; without those details, a frame-rate complaint is difficult to reproduce.
Pre-install checklist
- Windows 10 64-bit is installed and fully updated.
- Your processor meets the minimum model, or preferably the recommended model.
- Your dedicated GPU has at least 6GB (NVIDIA minimum) or 8GB (AMD minimum) of VRAM and matches a listed model class.
- At least 16 GB of system RAM is installed.
- DirectX 11 support is available for the minimum tier; DirectX 12 support aligns with the recommended tier.
- At least 30 GB of free storage is available, with additional room for updates and temporary files.
- Graphics drivers and the game are updated.
- You have checked the latest developer notes for GPU-specific fixes, including the October 9 FSR change for RTX 40- and 50-series cards.
Bottom line
A PC with Windows 10 x64, an i5-8600K or Ryzen 5 3500, 16 GB RAM and a GTX 1060 6GB or RX 590 8GB meets the published minimum class. The more sensible target for graphics headroom is an i5-12400 or Ryzen 5 5600X with an RTX 3070 Ti 8GB or RX 6750 XT 12GB. Both tiers require 30 GB of available storage, and the official listing does not require an SSD. Because the game is in Early Access and has no published controlled frame-rate benchmark, treat these numbers as compatibility guidance and revisit them after major patches.
