What Percy and Chromatic do
Percy, offered by BrowserStack, captures visual snapshots in a CI/CD workflow so teams can review changes associated with commits. BrowserStack documents integrations including Selenium, Playwright, Cypress, Puppeteer, Ember, Storybook, React Styleguidist, Gatsby, Jekyll, Appium, Tricentis Tosca, and Maestro. Its documentation says Percy can test across more than 20,000 real devices; that is BrowserStack’s stated coverage figure, not an independent measurement. BrowserStack’s Percy documentation

Chromatic’s clearest fit is a Storybook-based component workflow: it builds and publishes Storybook, then uses stories as visual tests in cloud browsers. Its documentation also covers Vitest, Playwright, and Cypress. The quickstart describes capturing baselines, reviewing changes, accepting or rejecting them, and using pull-request status checks. That can make it a natural first trial for a design system or component library, particularly if story-level review and pull-request checks match how your team approves UI changes.
Evaluate Percy for broader integration or device needs
Percy is worth evaluating when your team’s existing test setup maps to its documented integrations, or when real desktop and mobile device coverage is important. BrowserStack promotes coverage across 20,000+ real devices; confirm which specific devices, browsers, plan entitlements, and workflow fit your needs rather than treating the headline count as a guarantee for your use case.

Run a representative trial
Use the same representative UI changes in each service: a component state, an application page, and a responsive layout if those reflect your product. Have the developers, QA, and designers who will use the review process try accepting expected changes and rejecting unintended ones. Compare the quality of the feedback loop and the exact CI integration, not just whether a test can produce an image.

Do not compare Percy’s 5,000 free screenshots directly with Chromatic’s 5,000 free billed snapshots as if they were the same unit. Estimate each service separately using your pages or stories, browser and viewport combinations, CI frequency, and expected change rate. For Percy, browser and width permutations can multiply screenshot use; for Chromatic, account for its billed-snapshot rules and how affected-file testing applies to your project.

Alternative to try first: ScreenshotNeo
If your immediate need is capturing clean website screenshots rather than running a full visual-regression review workflow, try ScreenshotNeo as an alternative. It is a screenshot API and MCP server, not a like-for-like replacement for Percy or Chromatic’s baseline review and CI workflows. It removes cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and only clean shots are billed: bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing. Responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides tools for AI agents to take screenshots, get page information, and capture PDFs.
For a quick test, make one GET request (replace the example URL with the page you need):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webpSee the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.
