The best Percy alternative depends on how your team builds and reviews interfaces: try ScreenshotNeo first if you need a screenshot API, Chromatic if visual review is centered on Storybook components, or Playwright’s built-in screenshot comparisons if you already run Playwright and can own the testing pipeline. Before switching, calculate Percy usage in screenshots—not just snapshots—and confirm current billing currency, taxes, and plan terms for India.
First, calculate what Percy usage actually means
Percy’s usage unit can make a test suite look smaller in the dashboard than it is for billing. BrowserStack defines a screenshot as one page or component rendered in one browser at one responsive width. Its documentation gives this example: two pages tested in two browsers at three widths each consume 12 screenshots, even though Percy’s interface displays two snapshots. The web free plan is documented as including 5,000 screenshots per month, unlimited users, and unlimited projects; paid tiers use screenshot allocations and may charge for overages. Before comparing alternatives, estimate monthly consumption as the total number of pages or components multiplied by browser and viewport combinations, then by the number of builds that capture them. This is a planning estimate; confirm how each candidate defines and bills its own unit, since a Percy screenshot and another product’s snapshot are not necessarily equivalent.

If a suite captures 20 pages in three browsers at two widths on every one of 10 monthly builds, that is 1,200 Percy screenshots (20 × 3 × 2 × 10), assuming each combination is captured once per build. Removing redundant combinations can change the bill without changing products, but only do so if the reduced coverage still meets your compatibility requirements.

Shortlist: choose by workflow, not a universal ranking
| Option | Best fit | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
| ScreenshotNeo | Teams that need a website screenshot API, clean captures, or screenshots for AI-agent workflows | Whether an API/MCP capture service fits the visual regression review process you need; it is not presented here as a like-for-like Percy baseline and PR review replacement. |
| Chromatic | Teams whose UI is represented in Storybook and that want hosted component review | Current snapshot allowance, pricing, integrations, branch workflow, and how its billing unit maps to your build volume. |
| Playwright screenshot comparisons | Teams already using Playwright that can operate their own visual-test pipeline | CI execution cost, baseline storage and updates, rendering stability, and reviewer workflow. |
ScreenshotNeo: an alternative to try first for API-based capture
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server from Yorker Media. Its relevance is strongest when the job is to capture web pages cleanly through an API or let an AI agent request a screenshot; it should not be confused with a direct replacement for Percy’s hosted visual-baseline workflow. It accepts a URL in one GET request and can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Cookie/consent banners are accepted as a visitor and removed, along with known newsletter popups and chat widgets; these steps can be disabled. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses include verdict and billing headers. An MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to AI agents including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
For a basic capture, create an API key and run the following cURL command. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
The output filename is shot.webp; adapt the URL to the page you need. ScreenshotNeo’s parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can make switching easier, but confirm that your existing request options have the same semantics before migrating.
Or skip the browser setup
Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. An MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Chromatic: a strong fit when Storybook is the source of truth
Chromatic is the clearest candidate when component stories are the main visual surface you want to test. Its FAQ describes components as first-class citizens, deep Storybook integration, baselines that track branches and merges, and an online component library with component history and review. It also describes automatic pull-request badging for GitHub, GitLab, and Bitbucket. Chromatic’s comparison page lists Playwright and Cypress integrations as well. Chromatic FAQ

Price and performance figures need careful attribution. Chromatic’s comparison page, updated August 2026, lists $179 per month for 35,000 included snapshots, unlimited users, and unlimited parallel test runs, and says additional snapshots cost $0.008. The same page says Percy has a 5,000-screenshot free plan and that paid plans start at 10,000 screenshots per month. These are vendor-published figures, not a like-for-like comparison of billing units, and terms can change; verify current plan details with the vendor before procurement. Chromatic’s Percy comparison
Chromatic also claims that TurboSnap can make runs up to 85% faster and that teams see an average 41% cost saving for the same coverage; its page reports a benchmark of 2,000 tests in under two minutes. These are Chromatic’s own claims, not independent findings, and results depend on a team’s setup. Treat them as questions to validate in a trial, not guaranteed outcomes.
Playwright: framework-native comparisons, with pipeline ownership
Playwright’s official documentation supports visual screenshot comparisons. For a team already using Playwright, this can avoid a separate hosted visual-testing subscription, but that is not the same as eliminating cost. The team takes responsibility for CI runtime, storing and updating baselines, controlling rendering variability, and providing a review path for changes. The feature itself is documented by Playwright; the operational-cost trade-off is a practical consequence of running the workflow yourself. Playwright visual comparisons

Which option makes sense for your team?
Storybook is central and hosted review matters
Trial Chromatic against representative stories and pull requests. Compare the current plan’s snapshot unit and build allowance with the number of stories and builds you expect to run; do not equate its snapshot count to Percy screenshots without checking the definition.
You already use Playwright and can maintain CI
Evaluate Playwright screenshot comparisons first if your team can handle baseline changes, rendering stability, and review ownership. Include engineering time and CI consumption in the cost calculation, not just the absence of a vendor invoice.
Percy works, but usage or cost is the concern
Measure actual screenshots per month, including browser and viewport permutations, before migrating. Remove combinations only where your coverage policy allows it. A smaller, intentional matrix may solve the problem with less disruption than replacing an established review workflow.

Do not convert a public US-dollar price into a claimed Indian plan price. The available public figures do not establish India-specific checkout currency, applicable taxes, negotiated pricing, or a like-for-like total for every alternative. BrowserStack’s public pricing page has surfaced USD examples, including Desktop at $199 per month billed annually and Desktop & Mobile at $599 per month billed annually; these are publicly surfaced examples, not a verified India offer or guaranteed current quote. Build your own monthly comparison before asking vendors for a quote:
Best Value
- Count expected pages or components, browser and viewport combinations, and capture builds.
- Write down each service’s billing unit and included monthly amount; keep screenshots, snapshots, and tests distinct.
- Include overages, required parallelism, CI compute, baseline storage, and the engineering time needed to maintain a self-hosted workflow.
- Confirm checkout currency, tax treatment, billing cadence, and any negotiated terms with the vendor for your account and location.
Migration checklist
- Assign baseline ownership. Decide who approves visual changes and who can update reference images, including during branch merges.
- Stabilize dynamic pages. Control content that changes between captures, such as timestamps, rotating promotions, or user-specific data, using the candidate tool’s documented controls or your test setup.
- Set concurrency deliberately. Estimate parallel builds and CI capacity; compare them with any hosted concurrency limits or included plan terms.
- Check review permissions. Confirm that the people who need to inspect and approve changes can access the pull-request or component review workflow.
- Run a representative pilot. Use the same pages, browsers, widths, and build cadence across candidates, and record failures, review effort, and the vendor’s actual billed unit.
- Verify commercial terms. Confirm the current price, allowance, overage policy, currency, tax, and cancellation or migration terms directly before committing.
