In four experiments, participants tended to judge men with higher fWHR as more effective at protecting offspring and chose them more often for hypothetical protection roles. The experiments measured impressions and choices—not men’s actual parenting or protective behavior.
What does “face shape” mean in this study?
The researchers examined facial width-to-height ratio, or fWHR, rather than a broad everyday category such as “square face.” VICE describes the measurement as cheek-to-cheek width compared with the distance from the upper lip to the brow. A wide jaw or square-looking face is not, by itself, an exact substitute for the study’s ratio.
The paper, “Formidable Facial Structures Inform Perceptions of Men’s Ability to Protect Offspring,” by Mitch Brown, Donald F. Sacco, Nicholas P. Maxwell, Lindsey E. Eagan and Steven G. Young, reports four experiments on how this facial cue affects judgments about men as potential parents. The article appeared in Evolutionary Psychological Science; the journal record lists an acceptance date of July 16, 2026.
What did the four experiments find?
Across the experiments, participants attributed greater protection effectiveness to higher-fWHR men and selected them more frequently for hypothetical protective roles. The studies examined perceived parental ability, choices for protection or nurturance, judgments of upright versus inverted faces, and perceived parental motivations.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Protection choices differed from nurturance choices
The clearest numerical example comes from Study 2. In a hypothetical task to choose an offspring-protection team, participants selected an average of 2.78 higher-fWHR targets and 1.15 lower-fWHR targets. These are average choices within an experimental task, not population statistics. In the separate nurturance-selection task, choices did not significantly differ by fWHR.
Strength, aggression and warmth shaped impressions
In Study 2, participants rated higher-fWHR targets as stronger and more aggressive, and lower-fWHR targets as warmer. Perceived strength and aggression were associated with selecting higher-fWHR targets for protection, with the association for strength larger. This offers a possible explanation for the choices in that experiment; it does not show that facial structure causes protective behavior.

VICE’s account of Study 4 adds that participants judged higher-fWHR men as more interested in short-term mating and lower-fWHR men as more interested in long-term relationships. These were judgments about faces, not evidence about the men’s actual preferences, commitment or fidelity.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does a higher ratio mean someone will protect children better?
No. The study supports a finding about observers’ perceptions: participants used fWHR as a cue when judging protection-related ability and making hypothetical selections. The experiments did not establish that the men pictured were parents, observe how they treated children, or measure actual protection, nurturance or relationship behavior.

The paper describes fWHR as a heuristic—a quick mental cue or shortcut people may use to form an impression. A shortcut can influence judgment without reliably describing an individual. The researchers also discuss a possible tension in impressions: perceived physical formidability may suggest capacity for protection, while perceived aggression can affect how a person is viewed. Neither perceived capacity nor perceived motive should be mistaken for real-world conduct.
