If your headphone ear pads are already flaking, the practical fix is to replace them with cushions made for your exact model. The coating is worn; the manufacturer guidance reviewed does not establish glue, polish, or conditioner as a reliable repair. Before removing anything, identify which part is peeling, check warranty and fit, and follow that model’s instructions.
First identify what is peeling
Check whether the damaged surface is on the ear cushions, the headband cushion, or another part. Ear pads are often replaceable, but headband padding may require a separate part or manufacturer service. Valco, for example, describes user-replaceable pads for its VMK earcups while directing headband-padding issues to its service process (Valco support).

Flaking is a recognized wear sign, but the criteria and replacement guidance depend on the product. Bose’s A20 aviation headset guide lists flaking, cuts or tears, and flattening that reduces the seal as signs its ear cushions need replacing (A20 owner’s guide). That guidance is specific to an aviation headset, not a universal replacement schedule.

Check warranty and fit before buying or prying
Look up the exact headphone model and revision on the manufacturer’s support or parts page. Check the warranty terms for your region and ask the maker whether the damage may be covered before disassembling the headphones. Valco says seam tearing without mechanical damage on a unit under 24 months old may be assessed as a warranty matter; Audeara directs customers within its stated two-year warranty period to contact support. These are company-specific policies, not general warranty promises (Valco; Audeara).

When checking replacement pads, confirm the model and revision, mounting style, left/right orientation if relevant, and whether the kit includes inner pieces such as a scrim, foam disc, or retaining ring. A pad that looks similar may not fit. Valco says VMK20 pads are not interchangeable with VMK25 pads, while VMK25 and VMK25.2 pads are interchangeable (Valco support). Compare the material and feel you prefer, and check the seller’s return terms; there is no supported basis for saying one material lasts longer in every headphone.
Replace the pads using model-specific instructions
There is no single removal method that applies to all headphones. JBL describes different procedures for on-ear and over-ear products, including a warning to take care around plastic hooks (JBL instructions). Sony likewise says the removal method varies by model and describes claws or tabs that should not be forced (Sony UK instructions).

- Find the official procedure. Search the maker’s support site for the exact model and “replace earpads” or “ear cushion replacement.” Check whether the procedure calls for a specific tool.
- Remove the old pad gently. Use only the release points and technique specified for that model. If the pad resists, stop and re-check the instructions rather than pulling harder.
- Preserve inner protective pieces. Note whether the kit calls for replacing a scrim or foam piece and how it sits. Bose’s consumer instructions say to replace protective scrims first when applicable, align the mounting flange, and press the tabs into place; its guide says all 10 tabs per cup must lock for optimal performance, particularly on noise-cancelling headphones (Bose instructions).
- Align and secure the new cushion. Follow the stated orientation and confirm that the ring, tabs, or hooks are fully seated. In the Momentum 3 manual, Sennheiser instructs users to line up the pad with the retaining-ring notches, orient the seam down, and press the ring around until it snaps into place (Momentum 3 manual).
- Check the fit before use. Make sure the cushion is evenly attached and no protective material is displaced. Sony warns that displaced internal cushioning can affect noise cancelling and cause echo (Sony UK instructions).
Valco’s VMK pads twist off and back on, but that method applies to the compatible VMK models it identifies, not to headphones generally (Valco support). Keep liquids away from the earcup and its electronics throughout any cleaning or replacement.

Follow the cleaning instructions for the exact model and cushion material; advice differs. beyerdynamic says to clean its earpads with a soft damp cloth and water only, without detergents (beyerdynamic support). Sennheiser’s Momentum 3 manual recommends a clean, soft cloth dampened with water for leather parts and warns against leather polish, detergents, and harsh soaps; it also advises against damp or humid storage (Momentum 3 manual). Audeara advises against harsh cleaners, alcohol, and soaking, and recommends keeping cushions away from direct sunlight and heat sources (Audeara support).

Moisture, skin oils, heat, storage, and frequency of use can all matter to cushion wear. Where the maker permits it, gently wipe the pads after use and let damp cushions air-dry completely before reassembly. Bose recommends regular wiping, especially after workouts, and complete air-drying before reassembly; Audeara also suggests airing out damp cushions (Bose instructions; Audeara support). Do not treat these steps as permission to soak pads or use alcohol.
There is no universal replacement interval
Use visible wear and the manufacturer’s guidance rather than assuming all pads should be changed on the same timetable. Valco estimates its pads typically last about 1–3 years, with use, skin oils, moisture, and storage affecting lifespan; that is a Valco estimate, not an industry-wide lifespan (Valco support).

Bose’s A20 Aviation Headset Owner’s Guide gives a general replacement rule of every six months or every 350 hours of use, depending on flying frequency. It applies to that aviation headset, and the guide also identifies flaking, cuts or tears, and flattening that reduces seal effectiveness as replacement signs (A20 owner’s guide). The manufacturer sources cited here do not establish an industry-wide interval for headphone-pad replacement.
If the headband cushion is peeling
Do not assume an ear-pad replacement kit will fix a peeling headband. Search the manufacturer’s parts and repair support for that specific headband component, or ask whether service is available. A compatible headband cover may conceal surface wear, but it is an accessory rather than a repair and does not replace a damaged ear cushion.
