Peak Performance’s Ridge HIPE Ace is a capable waterproof shell, but whether it is worth buying depends on which version you mean and how you use it. In T3’s August 20, 2026 review, Pat Kinsella said the jacket kept out wind and rain on coastal dog walks, camping trips and Scottish hill hikes. He liked its roomy fit, hood and pockets, but missed pit zips on the version he tested. The official Ridge Ace Ski listing, however, describes front-facing ventilation, so check the exact model and SKU before purchasing.
How well did the reviewed Ridge jacket handle rain?
Kinsella reported staying dry through showers and downpours encountered on dog walks along the South West Coast, while camping and on hill hikes in Scotland. This was field experience, not a controlled waterproofness test, and he did not encounter the most severe rain during his trial. His experience is useful for judging ordinary wet-weather use, but it does not establish performance in prolonged extreme conditions.

The review lists the tested jacket at 20,000 mm hydrostatic head and 20,000 g/m²/24h breathability. Those are product specifications, not independently measured comparative results. Peak Performance also gives those ratings for its HIPE ACE 3-layer shells.

What did the reviewer like and dislike?
Room for layers and useful details
Kinsella found the fit relaxed enough to wear layers underneath. He praised the hood’s peak, the large pockets, quality zippers and soft chin guard. The hood also has a RECCO reflector, a feature intended to aid location by organized rescue teams equipped with compatible detectors; it is not a substitute for carrying appropriate safety equipment.

Ventilation is the key drawback—and varies by version
The version Kinsella tested lacked pit zips. He found that the two-way front zipper could release some heat, but was less helpful for ventilation while it was raining. He also noted limited color choice and questioned whether the shoulders had reinforcement against backpack-harness abrasion; the review does not establish that reinforcement is absent.
Do not assume every Ridge HIPE Ace has the same vent layout. Peak Performance’s official men’s Ridge Ace Ski HIPE ACE 3L listing describes zippered front-facing ventilation, while Kinsella’s reviewed version had no pit zips. Confirm the exact garment’s product page and SKU rather than relying on the Ridge name alone.

Ridge HIPE ACE or Treeline HIPE?
If your outings are less demanding, Peak Performance’s Treeline HIPE 2.5L shell is the lighter-duty alternative described in the supplied product and review information. The brand gives standard HIPE a minimum 10,000 mm waterproofness and 10,000 g/m²/24h breathability, compared with 20,000/20,000 for HIPE ACE. A recent T3 review characterizes the Treeline as a shell for casual hiking rather than the harshest mountain conditions.

- Frequent, strenuous mountain use in wet weather: The higher stated HIPE ACE ratings give it the stronger specification, though they do not by themselves guarantee comfort or dryness in every condition.
- Casual walks and lighter hiking: The Treeline’s 2.5-layer construction and lower stated ratings may be adequate if you do not need the Ridge’s more protective specification.
- High-output activity: Prioritize the exact version’s ventilation. A two-way main zip is not equivalent to underarm pit zips, and the Ridge family’s listed vent arrangements differ.
- Backpack use or layering: Check fit over your intended midlayers and inspect shoulder construction on the exact garment; the review raises, but does not answer, the abrasion-reinforcement question.
Price, availability and care
At the time the official men’s Ridge Ace Ski page was indexed, it showed a Swedish regional price of 6,500 SEK and a waitlist notice. That is a regional listing snapshot, not a current universal price or confirmation of stock elsewhere. The independent review’s approximate regional prices also vary, so check the local listing for the exact variant before comparing value.
Peak Performance’s listed care directions for the men’s Ridge Ace Ski include a delicate 40°C machine wash with liquid detergent, a double rinse, no fabric softener, and low tumble drying or flat drying in shade. The brand says ironing or tumble drying after washing helps maintain the water-repellent treatment. Follow the care label on your own garment if it differs.

Verdict: who should buy the Ridge HIPE Ace?
The Ridge HIPE Ace is a strong candidate if you need a protective 3-layer shell with room for layers and appreciate practical details such as a peaked hood and RECCO reflector. Kinsella’s field report supports its usefulness in the rain he encountered, while the 20K/20K ratings are specifications rather than proof from a controlled test. Its main decision point is ventilation: the reviewed jacket lacked pit zips, while an official ski variant lists front-facing vents. Verify the exact model, ventilation, fit and local price before buying.
