Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf PEAK crashes on your Windows PC, start with Steam’s file verification, remove mods and overlays, update Windows, GPU drivers and Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable, then test DX11, DX12 and Vulkan one at a time. Cap the frame rate and enable V-Sync for in-game crashes. If the problem began after a resolution or fullscreen change, reset PEAK’s display values. These steps are recommended troubleshooting measures, not guaranteed universal fixes.
Identify the crash before changing anything
| Symptom | Start here | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Play is clicked but nothing launches, or Steam closes after “Preparing to launch” | Restart Steam and the PC, verify files, remove launch options and mods, then test another graphics API | Do not begin by editing the registry |
| Black screen | Verify files, remove launch options and mods, update the GPU driver and Visual C++ Redistributable | Audio may indicate that the game is running while rendering fails |
| Crash after changing resolution or fullscreen | Back up the registry key and reset only PEAK’s Screenmanager values |
You will need to configure display settings again |
| Crash during a climb or after several minutes | Disable overlays and monitoring tools, cap FPS, enable V-Sync and test another API | Lowering settings alone may not address a software conflict |
| Crash in a particular area, such as the airport | Check the GPU against the requirements; try the specific -gpuCulling false workaround |
This workaround is tied to texture-loading issues, especially below-minimum GPUs |
| Controller-only failure | Disconnect controllers and unusual USB input devices; test with mouse and keyboard | This is a diagnostic test, not proof that controllers generally cause crashes |
| Lobby error or disconnect | Check Steam status, mods, antivirus and network conditions | A multiplayer or Photon failure is not necessarily a game-process crash |
| Windows blue screen, reboot or power-off | Check temperatures, drivers, overclocks, RAM/XMP, PSU stability and Event Viewer | Treat repeated full-system failures as a system-stability problem |
Check whether your PC meets PEAK’s requirements
PEAK’s Steam listing specifies Windows 10/11 and a 64-bit operating system; the listed requirements do not establish official support for macOS, Linux or consoles. Minimum hardware is not a promise of crash-free play.

Press Windows + R, enter dxdiag, and check the System and Display tabs for Windows, DirectX, RAM and GPU details. On a laptop, confirm that PEAK is assigned to the dedicated GPU in Windows Settings > System > Display > Graphics. Leave additional free space for Windows updates and shader caches.

Run the low-risk fixes first
- Exit PEAK and choose Steam > Exit, not just the window’s close button. Restart Windows.
- Check Steam for a PEAK update and confirm you have free disk space.
- Verify the installation: Steam Library > PEAK > Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files. Steam can replace missing or damaged files, but verification does not remove mods or fix unstable hardware.
- Remove every mod. In PEAK’s Steam properties open Workshop and choose Delete all mods. Inspect the installation folder for leftovers, including BepInEx-related files, then verify the files again. Disabling a mod may leave injected files behind.
- Disconnect gamepads, joysticks, wheels, pedals, flight controls, virtual-controller software and unusual USB hubs. Test with only a mouse and keyboard.

Remove software conflicts
For one test session, fully close software that injects overlays, captures frames or monitors hardware:
- Steam, Discord, NVIDIA and AMD overlays
- Recording and performance-monitoring utilities
- Overclocking and frame-injection tools
- Citrix Workspace
- Nahimic audio software
Landfall specifically calls out Citrix Workspace and recommends disabling Nahimic while diagnosing Unity-game crashes. Third-party antivirus can quarantine or block game files; add a temporary PEAK exception or pause its game-specific protection for the test, then restore protection. Do not leave antivirus permanently disabled.

Update Windows, drivers and Visual C++
- Install pending Windows updates, restart, and test again.
- Install the current GPU driver directly from NVIDIA, AMD or Intel. If the crash began immediately after a driver change, note that version for your report and consider the manufacturer’s clean-install option.
- Install or repair the latest Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable packages, as Landfall includes this in its black-screen troubleshooting sequence.
Test DX11, DX12 and Vulkan separately
Landfall recommends switching among DX11, DX12 and Vulkan because compatibility differs by GPU and driver. Test only one option at a time:

- Right-click PEAK in Steam Library and choose Properties.
- On General, find Launch Options.
- Enter
-force-d3d11, close the window and launch PEAK. - If it still crashes, remove that option and test
-force-d3d12. - For Vulkan, use the Vulkan choice exposed by your current PEAK build if one is shown; the exact presentation can vary.
- Remove the option before testing a different API or returning to the default.
A player-reported workaround describes forcing Vulkan, launching once, restarting Steam and then returning to DX12. It is community evidence, not a universal or developer-confirmed fix: Steam Community discussion.
Stabilize rendering during gameplay
If PEAK reaches the menu but crashes during a run, enable V-Sync and cap the frame rate to a stable value. A 60 FPS cap is a useful diagnostic baseline, not a correct limit for every monitor or PC. Avoid overclocking while testing. Try windowed or borderless mode if exclusive fullscreen appears to trigger the failure; reduce demanding graphics settings only after launch and file integrity are confirmed.
Reset display settings after a resolution or fullscreen crash
Use this only when the crash followed a display-setting change.

Editing the wrong registry key can damage other applications or Windows. Confirm the publisher path and PEAK key before deleting anything. Landfall documents this reset in its PEAK FAQ.
Black-screen-specific checks
First determine whether the monitor is black while audio continues, whether PEAK crashes immediately, or whether the monitor loses signal and the whole PC becomes unstable. For a PEAK black screen, remove added launch options, remove mods, verify files, restart Steam and Windows, update the GPU driver, install the latest Visual C++ Redistributable, test antivirus exclusion and reset display values if the issue followed a resolution change. Landfall also lists trying PEAK.exe as administrator as an option; treat it as a test, not a default permanent setting.
If the entire PC reboots or powers off
A game process closing, a blue screen, a driver reset, a reboot and a complete power loss have different causes. Repeated full-system failures should not be treated as a PEAK file problem alone. Check CPU and GPU temperatures, PSU capacity and cabling, CPU/GPU overclocks, RAM/XMP stability, recent driver changes and Windows Event Viewer. Test another demanding game. Do not claim PEAK damaged the hardware without system evidence, and do not repeatedly reinstall the game instead of investigating system stability.

Airport texture-loading workaround
If textures fail to load in the airport, particularly on a GPU below PEAK’s minimum specification, Landfall lists -gpuCulling false as a workaround used with DX11 or DX12. It is not a general crash fix: remove the option when diagnosing unrelated symptoms.
Send Landfall a useful crash report
