That is a vendor statement, not independent verification. The answer changes if you use PDFShift’s optional filename storage feature, and its current Data Processing Agreement (DPA) should be distinguished from older privacy and breach-notice statements.
Does PDFShift store the HTML or PDFs you convert?
For the basic conversion flow, PDFShift’s FAQ says, “We do not store requests or generated documents.” Its help-center description says the service loads the source, converts it, generates a PDF, and returns it in binary form without retaining data after the request. These are PDFShift’s descriptions of its service; the published materials do not independently verify the behavior for every endpoint or configuration.

PDFShift says you can send HTML directly, so the page does not need to be publicly accessible. That distinction matters for confidential pages: a URL-based workflow may require the service to fetch a page, while direct HTML submission avoids making the source page public. Confirm the exact request mode and data flow for the API endpoint you plan to use.

PDFShift’s FAQ describes an optional filename behavior for HTML conversion that stores the generated PDF in PDFShift’s Amazon S3. The FAQ says delivery to your own S3 is also available “for increased privacy.” The current DPA annex says PDFShift-hosted output under this option is stored in Paris, France, for up to two days and automatically deleted. It also says submitted HTML and header/footer content are not stored in S3 as part of that functionality.

Keep the categories separate when evaluating retention: source HTML submitted for processing, transient processing, binary output returned to your application, PDFShift-hosted output saved through filename, and output delivered to your own storage are not interchangeable. Ask PDFShift to confirm the current behavior for your chosen configuration.
Can you send confidential HTML without making the page public?
According to PDFShift’s FAQ, yes: send the HTML directly rather than asking PDFShift to fetch a publicly available page. For sensitive content, check your implementation for accidental copies in application logs, retries, temporary files, queues, or error reports. The vendor’s statement about not retaining conversion requests does not describe what your own systems retain.
If the generated PDF should not be held by PDFShift, avoid the optional PDFShift S3 output path and ask whether delivery to customer-owned S3 is supported for your specific request. Confirm where that bucket is located, who can access it, and how long your application retains the result.

What does PDFShift’s DPA promise?
The current DPA identifies the customer as Controller and PDFShift as Processor for covered Company Personal Data. It says PDFShift will process that data on documented customer instructions, except where law requires otherwise; treat it as confidential; bind relevant personnel to confidentiality obligations; and limit access to people who need it for the service or their duties.
The DPA describes risk-appropriate technical and organizational measures, including physical, logical, access, transfer, instruction, entry, availability, and separation controls. It says PDFShift will provide an overview on request and will not materially decrease overall service security during a subscription term. The terms of service separately promise commercially reasonable efforts to maintain administrative, technical, and physical safeguards for confidentiality, availability, and integrity. These documents describe contractual commitments; they do not establish that an independent auditor has tested the controls or that they meet your organization’s particular requirements.
The DPA also places responsibility on the customer for its own processing compliance and for the accuracy, quality, legality, and acquisition of submitted data. A DPA is useful contractual evidence, but it does not by itself determine whether your planned use is lawful or suitable for a specific class of confidential information.

The privacy policy says personal data may be transferred from Europe to another country and refers to European Commission Standard Contractual Clauses when there is no adequacy decision. That policy page says it was last modified February 28, 2022, so verify its current status before relying on it. The DPA says transfers outside the EEA require appropriate safeguards. Check the live subprocessor annex and the version of the DPA that applies to your account and service configuration.
What are PDFShift’s breach-notification and deletion deadlines?
The current DPA says PDFShift will notify the company without undue delay and no later than 36 hours after PDFShift or a subprocessor becomes aware of a personal data breach affecting Company Personal Data. It also describes information and cooperation to support the customer’s response. The trigger is awareness under the DPA, not simply the time a customer first suspects an incident.

An older PDFShift GDPR page instead says customers will be notified within 72 hours after a breach is detected. The pages do not explain the difference. For a contract, use the terms actually signed and confirm the operational escalation path; do not assume the older page overrides the current DPA or that a stated deadline guarantees a particular incident response.
Under the current DPA, after the specified service/processing condition and on written request, PDFShift must securely return or irreversibly delete or destroy covered data without delay and no later than five business days, subject to legal retention requirements. The older GDPR page separately mentions two-year retention for expired trial and cancelled users. It does not reconcile that statement with the DPA’s deletion clause, so ask which data categories, account status, and legal obligations the two-year claim covers.
Is PDFShift GDPR compliant or independently security-audited?
PDFShift’s DPA and privacy materials describe a processor relationship, security commitments, transfer safeguards, and privacy practices. Those are relevant inputs to your assessment, not an independent conclusion that PDFShift is “GDPR compliant” for every use. Compliance depends on the data, purpose, legal basis, configuration, and your own responsibilities as controller.

The reviewed public materials do not establish a particular independent security certification or audit. PDFShift’s privacy policy also says it “cannot guarantee full protection against any leak.” For a security review, request current control evidence and confirm the applicable DPA, subprocessors, locations, retention, transfer terms, and incident contacts. Do not treat the absence of a public audit statement as proof that no audit exists; ask the vendor directly.
How to assess PDFShift for a confidential workflow
- Map the data flow. Identify whether your integration submits a URL or direct HTML, what headers or metadata accompany it, where the generated PDF goes, and which application components create additional copies.
- Choose the output path deliberately. Determine whether you need binary response delivery, PDFShift’s optional
filenamestorage, or customer-owned S3 delivery. Confirm current location and retention for the exact path. - Review the contract. Compare the live DPA and your signed copy, including controller/processor scope, security measures, subprocessor annex, deletion conditions, transfers, and the 36-hour breach-notice clause.
- Verify organizational fit. Ask for current control evidence, retention details for each data category, escalation contacts, and any requirements your organization has for sensitive or regulated information.
- Reduce exposure in your own systems. Avoid placing confidential HTML or PDF contents in debug logs, analytics, unprotected temporary storage, or broad-access queues. Set access and deletion controls for the copies your application handles.

Does PDFShift process account information as well as conversion content?
Yes. Its privacy policy describes account and contact information, transaction data, IP and log information, and usage information in contexts where PDFShift acts as a controller; the DPA addresses customer data processed on the customer’s behalf.
Does PDFShift’s published material specify a general retention period for every kind of data?
No. The current DPA gives a specific period for generated output saved through the optional filename feature, while other data categories and older account-retention claims require confirmation for the applicable configuration and contract.
