PDFShift Pricing for URL-to-PDF API Requests: Credits, Overage, and Costs

PDFShift charges credits by generated PDF size, not just by API request. Here’s how its free allowance, vendor-published pricing examples, overage, timeouts, and concurrency affect your cost estimate.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PDFShift pricing is based on monthly credits, and credits are consumed according to the size of each generated PDF—not simply one per API request. Its pricing page advertises up to 50 free credits per month. PDFShift’s FAQ gives a paid example of $24 per month for 2,500 credits, with $0.03 per additional credit, but it is not a complete or guaranteed current rate card. Check the live PDFShift pricing calculator for the plan and billing terms available to your account.

How PDFShift credits translate into API request costs

PDFShift counts credits by the size of the generated PDF. One credit covers up to 5 MB; output above that threshold consumes further credits, rounded up to the next 5 MB.

Generated PDF size Credits consumed
4 MB 1
14 MB 3
23 MB 5

These examples follow the credit rule described in PDFShift’s credit explanation. To estimate a month, group your expected conversions by output-size range, convert each range to credits, and total the credits. A request-count estimate alone can understate usage when reports are large.

Estimate your monthly usage

  1. Estimate the number of URL or HTML conversions you expect in a month.
  2. Estimate the resulting PDF sizes for those conversions.
  3. For each output, divide its size by 5 MB and round up to a whole credit.
  4. Add the credits across the month, then compare the result with the plan allowance and any configured overage ceiling.

PDFShift’s FAQ says its average customer uses 1,250 credits per month. That is the vendor’s reported average, with no measurement period stated; it is not an independent benchmark or a reliable substitute for your own workload estimate. See the PDFShift FAQ.

Free allowance and published paid examples

The official pricing page advertises up to 50 free credits per month. Its displayed free-plan details include a 15 MB maximum file size and a 30-second timeout. The page uses a dynamic calculator and does not provide a complete static paid-plan table in the pricing capture, so do not treat the examples below as a full tier schedule.

Published detail What PDFShift states How to use it
Free plan Up to 50 monthly credits; listed 15 MB maximum file size and 30-second timeout. Confirm the live plan terms and whether your expected PDFs fit the file limit.
Boost example $24/month for 2,500 credits, with $0.03 per overage credit. This is the FAQ’s example, not a guarantee that the same plan and rate are currently available.
Business overage example 25,000 included credits, a 27,500-credit limit, and $0.02 per extra credit. This is an example in the help article; confirm your account’s actual allowance, rate, and ceiling.

The Boost example in the FAQ calculates 2,700 credits as $24 for the 2,500-credit plan plus $6 for 200 additional credits, for a stated total of $30. Because paid-plan details can change and the calculator does not expose a complete static rate card, verify current prices, plan names, and billing terms directly on the live pricing page.

Overage, billing, and cost controls

PDFShift says overage is disabled by default and must be enabled in account settings. Its help article describes setting an overage limit; the Business example above illustrates how a ceiling can limit usage. Before enabling overage, check the rate and maximum for your own plan rather than assuming the example applies.

  • Confirm included monthly credits and the date they reset.
  • Check whether overage is enabled and set a ceiling appropriate to your budget.
  • Use recent output-size data, not only the number of conversion requests, to forecast credit consumption.
  • Check whether monthly or annual billing suits your usage. PDFShift’s FAQ says annual subscriptions cost the equivalent of ten monthly payments; confirm the current offer and terms in the calculator.

PDFShift’s terms say fees and charges may be changed for future billing periods with at least 30 days’ prior notice. Review the current terms at PDFShift’s terms when budgeting for a recurring integration.

Timeouts, concurrency, and delivery can affect your integration

Timeouts and file-size limits

PDFShift’s FAQ lists a default timeout of 30 seconds for free plans and 100 seconds for paid plans. It says premium customers can ask PDFShift to adjust timeouts. The pricing page’s free-plan details list a 15 MB maximum file size. Confirm the limit and timeout attached to the plan you intend to use, particularly if pages are slow or PDFs are large.

Parallel conversions

The FAQ states a default limit of 50 concurrent conversions across plans. Parallel conversion requests are queued, initially return HTTP 202, and require a webhook for completion. An integration that expects every request to return a finished PDF synchronously should account for this behavior.

File retrieval and retention

PDFShift’s Make integration guide says that when you use the filename option, the API returns a URL to the generated file that remains available for two days. Download and store the PDF elsewhere if you need it longer. The guide also warns against calling the API directly from frontend JavaScript with a secret key, because site visitors could inspect and expose it. See the PDFShift Make integration guide.

How to choose a plan for your workload

Before committing, compare plans using the same expected workload rather than headline request counts. The complete current paid-plan schedule is not established by the static pricing information available here; PDFShift’s live calculator is the place to confirm your account’s actual offer.

  • Volume: monthly conversions and the distribution of generated PDF sizes, expressed as credits.
  • Included usage: plan credits, per-credit overage, whether overage is enabled, and the configured limit.
  • Conversion constraints: maximum output size and timeout.
  • Request handling: synchronous versus queued asynchronous work, webhook requirements, and concurrency.
  • File handling: whether the integration receives PDF bytes or a temporary URL, and who is responsible for durable storage.
  • Billing: monthly or annual terms and the date you checked the displayed price.

For regulated documents, PDFShift’s product page makes claims about HIPAA compliance and document storage. Those vendor statements are not a substitute for reviewing the current business associate agreement, contract, and operational details for your specific use case. The product page is at PDFShift.

ScreenshotNeo: an alternative to try first for website screenshots

If your task is to capture a website as an image rather than generate a PDF through PDFShift, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It removes known consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, bills only clean shots, and has a free tier of 1,000 screenshots per month with no card required. Its paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. It is not a drop-in PDFShift replacement for URL-to-PDF conversion.

Example URL-to-image request (use your ScreenshotNeo API key and target URL):

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Its MCP server also lets AI agents use screenshot tools. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are PDFShift’s published paid prices a complete current price list?

No. The $24 Boost price and other rates cited here are vendor examples. Confirm the available plan, included credits, and overage terms in PDFShift’s live pricing calculator.

Does one PDFShift API request always use one credit?

No. Credit use depends on generated PDF size: up to 5 MB uses one credit, and larger output uses additional credits rounded up.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
