The Indian rupee sign is Unicode U+20B9. The cause in a particular invoice cannot be identified without checking its HTML, CSS, font and PDF output.
1. Check that the invoice contains the correct character
Confirm that the amount uses the Indian rupee sign, ₹ (U+20B9), rather than a visually similar character. U+20A8, ₨, is a distinct older rupee sign. If your template or data pipeline makes the character hard to inspect, try the numeric HTML character reference ₹ or ₹ in the invoice markup, then check the decoded text in a browser before converting it.

If ₹ is missing in the browser-rendered invoice, correct the template or text data first. PDF conversion cannot render a character that is not present in the page.
2. Verify the font used for the invoice amount
A CSS declaration naming a font family does not prove that the actual font file contains a glyph for U+20B9. Check the font file used for the amount and confirm that its character coverage includes the Indian rupee sign. Also verify that the relevant font rule applies to the amount and has not been overridden by a later or more specific CSS rule.

PDFShift documents supplying custom-font CSS through its css parameter. Its example demonstrates how to provide a font; it does not certify that the example font supports ₹. Check the actual font you choose. See PDFShift’s custom-font guidance.
3. Make the font available before conversion
PDFShift says local font URLs and base64-encoded font files load faster than external fonts. It warns that an externally loaded font may not be available when conversion begins, which can produce intermittent results. If an external font is unreliable, use a reachable local asset or embed the font as base64, while ensuring the font file itself supports U+20B9.

4. Wait for asynchronous font loading
If the font loads asynchronously, PDFShift documents using wait_for with a function that checks document.fonts.ready. Add the function to the page or through PDFShift’s javascript setting, then configure wait_for to call it. The function should return true when the font-loading promise resolves.

}Configure the conversion request to run that function and wait for its true result. Consult PDFShift’s wait-for-content guide for the request syntax. The guide states timeouts of 30 seconds for free accounts and 100 seconds for premium accounts; these vendor-documented limits may change. A wait condition consumes time from the conversion’s timeout budget, so check that the page can finish loading within the applicable limit.

5. Compare the browser page with the generated PDF
- Open the invoice HTML in a browser and inspect the rendered amount. Confirm that ₹ is present.
- Generate the PDF and inspect the same amount in the output.
- If the symbol is absent in the browser, fix the source text or template.
- If the symbol appears in the browser but not the PDF, focus on the font file actually loaded by the conversion environment, its U+20B9 coverage, CSS precedence and whether it finished loading before rendering.
This comparison is a practical diagnostic inference from PDFShift’s font and loading guidance, not a vendor-prescribed root-cause test.
